Their centre is pretty nice and rather haphazard -- which has a very dense vibe that I often don't get in many bigger cities. The Interstate 195 relocation project will greatly boost downtown and the state as a whole.

right on. this otherwise great looking city was chopped up by poor highway placement and i am glad they will try to redress that.

Been staying in Worcester, MA for work. Have had a lot of time off to go and explore New England. I was impressed by Providence, seems like a lot of good things going on there. Sorry to hear the state is in such bad shape employment wise.

I dig the area around Brown and Federal Hill. The downtown itself is cute (if not dead, like a Dayton or Akron) but the area near the Mall/Capitol is quite nice and vibrant.

So they're moving their downtown highway to free up over 20 acres of land for development and reconnect downtown with neighborhoods that have been separated for decades and we're patting ourselves on the back for re-doing the split and adding a handful of retail caps over the highway.

Wonderful photos. I've heard a lot about Providence, and these show what a dense, historic, lively downtown it has. Great tour!

There is a reason why Interstate 195 veers north and next to downtown -- the Washington Bridge was constructed in 1930 and crossed the Seekonk River and was a super-street with no cross-traffic (they used u-turns). It was twinned in 1968 and approaches were constructed for Interstate 195. At the time, it was an efficient crossing, connecting downtown to points east, west, north and south (via Interstate 95, and the then-proposed Interstate 84, which was never fully completed east of Hartford to Providence.

Wouldn't want to think about what could have been lost here for an I-84 extension. Go Providence!

Well, not really much. The Interstate 84 eastern extension -- before it was relocated northeastward, was to follow US 6. The only segments completed under this plan was Interstate 384 around Manchester, the US 6 bypass of Willimantic and the US 6 freeway between Interstates 95 and 295. Interestingly enough, the Connecticut Turnpike once ended at US 6 north of Plainfield, CT and Interstate 95, and Interstate 84 would have connected to that.

IMO, while it may not have been justifiable at the time, the high accident and fatality rate -- and the non-rural nature of the route today, probably necessitates at least spot widening and dualization. Not much would be lost -- acreage of forests and some rural/ex-urban locales, but nothing too significant. That and Interstate 95 is currently overburdened for much of Connecticut, so an alternative would be nice.

As long as none of the above is lost, I can´t complain too much. Would rather see pasenger rail, of course.

Oh yeah, I would love to see that. And more high-speed rail. Upgrade the northeast corridor, dammit! :(
