A press release from the Governor, 10/27/06:

TAFT CELEBRATES OPENING OF JOSHI RESEARCH CENTER AT WRIGHT STATE UNIVERSITY

State-of-the-Art Research Facility to Highlight Success of Third Frontier Project

DAYTON (October 27, 2006) - Governor Bob Taft today joined Wright State University officials and local business leaders to celebrate the opening of the Joshi Research Center. The new 50,000 square foot facility will house daytaOhio, the Wright Center of Innovation for Advanced Data Management and Analysis, and research facilities for Wright State's College of Engineering and Computer Science. The project is expected to spur the creation of 500 jobs over three years, and is part of the Governor's Third Frontier Project, a statewide effort to create Ohio jobs by expanding the state's high-tech research capabilities.

"Through the Third Frontier Project, we're supporting new and emerging industries and laying the foundation for Ohio to attract more high-tech and high-paying jobs," said Taft. "The Joshi Research Center demonstrates Ohio's commitment to grow new business and compete in today's knowledge-based economy."

The Krishan and Vicky Joshi Research Center is a $10 million building expansion of the Fritz and Delores Russ Engineering Center, and will focus on developing and commercializing new technology, especially in the fields of advanced data management and analysis. The facility will bring together world-class data management researchers and entrepreneurs to promote the commercialization of new technologies. It will also allow the college to help train engineers and computer scientists with the innovation and leadership skills needed to grow the state's economy.

Taft joined Wright State University Provost and President-elect David Hopkins, Wright State President Kim Goldenberg, naming donors for the building Krishan and Vicky Joshi, daytaOhio President Paul Cashen, state Senator Steve Austria, state Representative Kevin DeWine and community business leaders for the opening ceremony today.

The daytaOhio project received $12.6 million in Wright capital and operating funds through the Third Frontier Project. The Dayton area has received approximately $40 million in Third Frontier funding to date, including the $12.6 million in Wright funds to Wright State University.

Xenia eyes redevelopment of former Kmart site, seeks developers

A large parcel of land that previously housed a big box store is being eyed for redevelopment in downtown Xenia.

The city of Xenia has submitted a Request for Proposals (RFP) related to a 5.6-acre tract on 200 W. Main St. Xenia economic development officials are seeking a qualified developer to transform this city-owned land — a former Kmart store that has since been demolished — into a mixed-use commercial property.

Steve Brodsky, development director for the city of Xenia, said they are open to development suggestions as long as they "add a different mix to the community."

New nonprofit forms to support downtown Xenia growth

A microbrewery, boutique and multiple coffeeshops have put down roots across downtown Xenia in the past couple years, so local businessowners have banded together to sustain the momentum and encourage additional economic growth.

The new nonprofit organization Downtown Xenia Inc. has been meeting weekly since last August to develop a business plan, and it secured $40,000 from Xenia’s city council in December to hire a director by August. This new employee will be tasked with managing the new program and emphasizing what makes the city unique to would-be entrepreneurs.

“People aren't going to come to Xenia for Walmart,” said Jennifer Dunn, a self-described “downtown advocate” who co-owns The Eavey Exchange building at 17 W. Third St. and helped develop the business plan. “But they will come to Xenia's downtown to walk around and visit some of these great new shops that have opened and to enjoy our bike trails (since) our hub is mile marker zero for the largest paved trail network in the nation.”

New affordable housing units set for downtown Xenia

New apartments are set to come to downtown Xenia, adding utility to vacant space above Xenia Shoe and Leather.

The owner of the business, Tim Sontag, has plans to renovate the upper floor of his building, located at 21 E. Main St., into housing units. It's a move he hopes will serve as a model for other building owners downtown.

Sontag said the upper floors will have five apartments. Four of those will be one-bedroom apartments, and one will have two bedrooms.

Xenia property owners seek redevelopment options

The new landlords of a 112-year-old grocery warehouse in downtown Xenia remain hopeful the right business-owners will come along to revitalize the 90,000-square-foot space.

“The bad news is it's a shell of a building. The good news is it's a shell of a building, and it's wide open. It can become so many different things,” said Jennifer Dunn, who bought the building with her husband at auction in 2016.

Dunn previously told DBJ she saw the Eavey building at 17 W. Third St. as a potential catalyst to prove the viability of continued economic investment in downtown Xenia, considering its proximity to the city’s bicycle trails and its walkability.
