The city of Xenia has submitted a Request for Proposals (RFP) related to a 5.6-acre tract on 200 W. Main St. Xenia economic development officials are seeking a qualified developer to transform this city-owned land — a former Kmart store that has since been demolished — into a mixed-use commercial property. March 10, 20205 yr New nonprofit forms to support downtown Xenia growth A microbrewery, boutique and multiple coffeeshops have put down roots across downtown Xenia in the past couple years, so local businessowners have banded together to sustain the momentum and encourage additional economic growth. The new nonprofit organization Downtown Xenia Inc. has been meeting weekly since last August to develop a business plan, and it secured $40,000 from Xenia’s city council in December to hire a director by August. This new employee will be tasked with managing the new program and emphasizing what makes the city unique to would-be entrepreneurs. “People aren't going to come to Xenia for Walmart,” said Jennifer Dunn, a self-described “downtown advocate” who co-owns The Eavey Exchange building at 17 W. March 19, 20205 yr New affordable housing units set for downtown Xenia New apartments are set to come to downtown Xenia, adding utility to vacant space above Xenia Shoe and Leather. The owner of the business, Tim Sontag, has plans to renovate the upper floor of his building, located at 21 E. Main St., into housing units. It's a move he hopes will serve as a model for other building owners downtown. Sontag said the upper floors will have five apartments. Four of those will be one-bedroom apartments, and one will have two bedrooms. April 3, 20205 yr Xenia property owners seek redevelopment options The new landlords of a 112-year-old grocery warehouse in downtown Xenia remain hopeful the right business-owners will come along to revitalize the 90,000-square-foot space. “The bad news is it's a shell of a building. The good news is it's a shell of a building, and it's wide open. It can become so many different things,” said Jennifer Dunn, who bought the building with her husband at auction in 2016. Dunn previously told DBJ she saw the Eavey building at 17 W. Third St. as a potential catalyst to prove the viability of continued economic investment in downtown Xenia, considering its proximity to the city’s bicycle trails and its walkability.
