I have no use for any of it; I'm utterly antisocial. :x

I opened a Facebook account, immediately became overwhelmed and paranoid, and deactivated it within 20 minutes.

Basically ditto for me.

One day I updated my status on Facebook (something I don't do very much) to say "'GCrites80s' is taking a dump." Only a few people got the joke.

That is funny!  I have told people that I expect to see a status like that some day.

That reminds of a status that I've seen that I thought was a little too much.  A facebook friend posted about her son's first day in kindergarten, and mentioned that he had pooped in his pants.  I see no problem posting that it's the first day of school, but was it really necessary to mention his accident?  People don't need to know that it happened, and now all these people are going to remember this.

^Wow.  Desperate much?

To be honest, I think our parents generation are the ones taking social networking to the extreme.

How true. The people I see that are most interested in Facebook are at least 20 years older than me.

But I think it's that generation that on the whole gets Facebook and so-called social networking. They're excited because it's actually augmenting, not replacing, their social lives. They regain contact with long lost friends and keep up with other friends a lot better than they were before. College kids are the ones using Facebook to post drivel and avoid real interaction with people they could easily see every day. Young people aren't going to realize Facebook is stupid and abandon it; young people are going to grow up and put it to better use.

Sure enough, now that I am several years out of school, I enjoy Facebook much more than when I was in school (granted, it only came into being while I was in school). Probably no more than ten of my Facebook friends live anywhere near me. What am I supposed to do, call up 50 people (to estimate a number of people I actually care much about) every week and ask what they're up to? Spend hundreds of dollars to meet them frequently? I'm very glad to be able to keep up with distant friends so easily.

As for Twitter, it's actually a fantastic information-sharing system. Interesting links abound. On the social aspect, well, you need to have true friends (i.e., people whose random thoughts you really do care about) on there for it to be worthwhile.

I'm 54 and a lot of my contemporaries are posting absolute drivel on Facebook. I find it useful to keep in touch with my son, who's a freshman in college. Last summer, we were both using it to keep up with college friends -- old friends for me, but for him it was friends he hadn't yet met.

  • 3 weeks later...

I caved and finally created a twitter page. I still have no idea what I'm doing on it or what I will use it for:

http://twitter.com/Mr_B15

  • 5 months later...

bump.  I caved and joined twitter.  If anyone would like to exchange follows, PM me?

your suppose to tell people your name.  In the event you dont want a person to follow you, you block them.  It's that simple.  Dont be scaaaared!  ;)

I don't need Twitter to follow R&R; I follow her around all the time. I hate to see her go but I love to watch her leave  :-P

(just playing, I'm not a creeper :-D )

I'll never make a Twitter account. I hardly ever even use facebook anymore.

Twitter is hillarious and easier to follow than facebook to me.  I read a lot of comments on our various brands/programming and some people are fanatic!  But they only have 140 characters to show their love.

Well that works for me. I'm ADD. When it comes to hearing what people have to say, less is more lol

LOL LOL

I'm kind of liking Twitter, though I barely have my toe in the water.  Less upkeep, less rules to worry about than with a FB page.

Facebook and LinkedIn, though I haven't been on the latter in months.  And in all honesty, even though I don't have a Twitter account (and may not ever sign up for one), I do enjoy browsing there.  For instance, I like to keep up with what Windhorst has to say about the Cavaliers.

I never actually post on Twitter but I do use it.  I have tweetdeck installed on my mac and I have it tied to facebook, twitter and buzz.  Whenever someone posts on twitter, like my newspaper or Sherman, I'll see it whether I'm on the actual site or not.  I don't think I have actually logged onto the actual Twitter website in a few months...

I use Facebook for family and a few friends, and Twitter is pretty much a feed for every blog and podcast I enjoy.

Exactly.  I use hootsuite and I have a bunch of sterams set up to follow all these work related things.

^ Has no one seen this yet? With all of the UO/Documentary junkies on here?

David/MTS, go rent it tonight ... I'm curious what your thoughts are. If you have Netflix it's avail for instant streaming.

No thanks, I have enough movies/tv shows to review.

Use facebook, while myspace is only for checking out bands.

OK....I'm not affraid of technology in any way but at times I think it can be taken too far.

Last night just prior to and while watching topchef the following occured:

  • My nephew and I were on the the computer with my grand parents and parents.  My grand father says he has go and he'll tweet later. (I look at them like they are crazy). My grand parents hang up.
  • Next my nephew opens up windows for twitter, facebook and bravos top chef's chat while still on video with my parents.

I watch this dork, tweet, FB, Bravo chat and video chat while the show is on. THEN, He gets a text message from my cousins son, who wants to be a chef.  and they start facetime.  :wtf:

I'm like, how the hell can you watch the show with all this other shit going on??  He's like, these "parties" happen for all types of shows.  I know that, but how can you pay attention?  I have meetings while im typing on UO, but I can do two things at once, not SIX!

All I can say is people wonder why our youth have short attention spans.

I just joined facebook a couple months ago, and it was only because I googled the name of the freelance A/C repair guy we had used (and lost his phone number)..and facebook was the only way to find him. SO I joined and asked to be his friend and could be come fix the a/c?

Still I don't really get the appeal. I am in the MTS generation and cannot believe older relatives who barely know how to use the interwebs were on FB long before me.

Only in the last few months did I succumb to somewhat regular texting. I think that is lame too but in some cases it works.

My grandfather is the biggest apple cheerleader.  He is the king of video chat and loves to send voice notes/memo.  ::) ::)  And dont get me started on his love affair with google voice.  He doesn't text and his usually response to a text is, "If you want to talk to me call me.  Do not send another damn text msg!"

Just deleted my Myspace account after 5 years of service.  I feel accomplished.

Hey I just started a facebook group called "Facebook 'Poke' should be 'Kick in the Crotch'".  Join!

You revoked our friendship on facebook; why would I join your group? :?

I thought the poking and crap like that was over with...

More and more I'm finding that when friends want to share pics, announce births, etc. they do it through FB, or if an organization has an event it's updated via FB. I don't have a FB account, but I've said to my wife that we might have to get a family account if for no other reason than to not be excluded from things. I didn't really want one, but I figure she can be the one that monitors it, and I don't want to be 'those people' that everyone has to make a special effort for because we stubbornly refuse to accept that which has become the standard.

That said, anyone know where I can rent betamax tapes?

You can block everyone from FB .  I only use facebook to follow fan pages of hotels, restaurants, retail stores, or things I find interesting.  Sometimes company's on FB (or twitter) will offer specials.  I have everyone blocked, my family can't even see me or search for me.  I've never posted on my wall.  I just want to stay in the know.

XUMelanie and I tried to do calls and emails announcing the birth of our child before we did Facebook, but people who found out before all notifications could be made started posting congrats on our Facebook walls.  Unfortunately, this means people found out before we could contact them properly.  Chalk it up to life in the new, real-time connected world.

I use Facebook...but moving more towards Twitter. Too many people that I am friends with list their/our employer and I like my facebook to be anonymous and let me post what I feel. Twitter is much better for that.

I am addicted to Mafia Wars on FB though.

DJ Orion, I saw your post on FB about the images. Good point. It seems impossible to have a good quality picture on Facebook. The compression level is ridiculous considering there isn't many graphics that would take up a lot of bandwidth anyway. You'd think they would at least let people put up a clear profile pic!

^Yeah Facebook isn't made for photographers, but it's a real pain when I upload an awesome photo, and it looks like sh!t.  Their compression is horrible.  Myspace was better with that.  But then again, Myspace was more open to artists so who knows.

I've had a lot of success with flickr to share pics, and I love looking around there to see what other people do. There are som amazing photographers on there.

I used to upload movies via yousendit, but now that flickr allows short films I just use that.

My sister in law just set up a blog for their kid, which is easier, but I don't like that the pics are just out there for everyone to see. I can at least control the privacy settings on flickr.

Flickr is awesome.  I use that as my primary online gallery, and once I get my website up and running, I will still use it as much as I do now.

What, no "hell no" option in the poll? Too bad. I have a Facebook account but I visit it probably every couple of months or so. I also have LinkedIn page for work, but I visit it even less. I do not have any of the others.

Get with the times man.  Think of all the Eastern European women you could "meet"!

So how many of you have dipped your toe into the Google+ pond?

Haven't done anything with it yet, is it worth it?  In fact, what exactly is it?  If it's supposed to be like Facebook, I'll hold off for a while.

I think it's better than Facebook and as they start to integrate each individual Google features(Gmail, Calendar, gtalk (&Gtalk Video), googlevoice, youtube, picasa, blogger, Google Music, Google Maps (& google latitude) etc.) into the "plus universe" Facebook will see some real competition.

Google has already renamed three products and is updating two so that they have better features.  For example and "group" you currently have in gmail contacts, you'll be able to turn that into a google plus circle.

Google plus to me is about building/maintaining relationships with people you already know where as Facebook is about connecting with anyone.

Every single one of their products is going after another company's product.

Google+ is a social networking environment currently in beta.  plus.google.com

I haven't gotten to play around with it and several days ago (last week?) they completely locked down the beta invites so you can't get in even if you do get a invite code.

I really like what I see so far.  However, it's going to be impossible to convince family members and others to move so I'll always periodically checking and updating Facebook even if Google+ takes off.

(I really need to stop going all ADD and coming back to finish my responses way after someone has already replied.)

Google+ is like Android to IOS and RIM.  It's only a matter of time before Google overtakes them and they go down in flames.

People using android say, Apple/Iphone products are for people who want ease.  Andriod is for people who want 100% customization and options.  That what Google+ will do to Facebook, since they need partnerships for everything.  Google has a stronghold on information and a fleet of innovative desktop and mobile products that will keep everything in one place, unified and sync'd.

Once google+ businesses (the equivalent of Facebook fan pages PLUS businesses you follow and offer products discounts/specials on Foursquare) is unleashed, it's a wrap for Twitter.  In addition, google offers, the product to compete with Groupon and living social, will soon be added to the mix right within Google Maps/Latitude.

I was going to do a reply saying "But Facebook isn't Microsoft (or Rim)" but then I thought how silly that sounds since Microsoft is a minority shareholder of Facebook(FB) as well as their go to partner with Bing and now Skype (now owned by Microsoft).  But my point is I don't think Facebook will stand still and will be reason enough for a lot of the 750 million users to stay put.  While today's Facebook press conference was a flop because they felt they had to distract from the industry buzz around G+ I think they're more than capable of adapting and becoming more like G+ if that's what the market wants.

Skype isn't a done deal yet.

How do you think Facebook can adapt and be more like Google?  I dont understand that at all.

That press conference was a joke.  You announce something that Google has been doing for a little more than 3 years and that google has been doing on the mobile platform (the nexus phones) for 6 months.  One service on one brand.  Skype, tango and Fring don't have the power combined to compete with google desktop version nor their mobile version.

Well, like I said in the google thread, Google + sounds much more appealing to me than facebook. The multiple user video chat alone would seal it with me. None of my family is on Facebook as it is, so it wouldn't be hard to get them to sign up for a Google account, and that's primarily who I would use anyway.

I hate to phrase it this way buy how can't Facebook become more like Google(+)?  Once you have users a social networking service is just deciding how you let your users identify their contacts and how they communicate.  Facebook could decide today that they're just going to be a Google+ clone and in 3-6months their engineers and web design folks would give us a blue version of Google+ or Facebook+.

In one of his only two meaningful statements yesterday Zuckerberg basically said that whatever they don't do they're going to partner with the people that do and won't throw them under the bus (jab at Twitter).  There's no reason to think FB couldn't lure anyone that isn't Google or Apple to their cause and duplicate any of the services.  The other interesting statement by Zuck yesterday was that they're no longer about user count (running out of first world people anyway) they're going to be about building things for their users.  So, two clear statements that they're going to be all about services.  That's if it wasn't clear enough already with their location check-in product; the FB currency (games, movie rentals, and beyond); the upgrades to chat and their quasi email project; and now with Skype.

FB won't beat Google at search and won't beat Apple in music but in two years they'll likely have just as many services and be good enough that your mother or grandmother (in the collective sense) will still be on Facebook like it's VHS in the early 2000s.  Again, Google+ looks great to me and I'll be giving it a go and hope that it does well enough that there's competition and a drive for innovation in the space.

But you're missing the Google+ point.  We have everything under one roof and dont have to partner with anyone to do it

F*ck.  I just wrote a long post and by accident hit another key and lost it!  The majority of google products compete with other products and they beat those products hands down.

They only place they are not winning is vs. itunes, but the fact that google music (beta) lets you sync your entire music library with itunes over the air without taking up space on your smartphone is genius.
