As long as I'm here posting stuff this morning, I'll post some photos of the Harvard Square area.  Though Harvard Square itself is of course an actual single point, the name in many contexts applies to a mini-neighborhood surrounding that.  I live sort of on the fringe of that area (actually right across the street from some Harvard housing, but a little separated from Harvard Square territory).

The majority of these are from a week or two ago, but a few up front are from several years ago and January of this year.

Panorama for some reason. Click if you want to see a bigger one.

Out of Town News has been a Harvard Square fixture for many years, providing, as the name indicates, news publications from all over the place. Recently, to everyone's dismay, the company owning it decided not to renew its lease, and it seemed that it would close. It ended up being rescued by another company, but still, it was another harbinger of doom for newspapers in general.  It's currently in the former headhouse for the Harvard Square subway stop, which was vacated following the station's redesign during an extension of the Red Line in the 80s.

Cambridge Common, where George Washington first assembled troops during the Revolutionary War.

I forget what this is, but I think its picture was on the city parking permit stickers this or last year.

Note the wires for trolley buses.  As far as I know, a few bus routes coming from Harvard station are the only places in the Boston area where old streetcar lines have survived in the form of trolley buses.

Crate & Barrel moved out a couple of months ago. I like the question mark.

This plaza faces Brattle Square, but Brattle Square being all of a single block away from Harvard Square, it's easy to never know that there is such a place name.

Students, tourists, and yuppies. Except possibly the guy in the lower right.

The Garage is a small-ish indoor retail building that I believe is in fact a former parking garage.

Some actual bits of Harvard.

Back on Mass Ave, this is about the east/southeast edge of what I would consider the Harvard Square "neighborhood."

That's it.  Next time, perhaps another of Cambridge's squares?

ugh!  Boston!!  :whip:

Nice pictures, my anger carries over from the Cavs thread.

I love Harvard Square

You know I only post these threads to make your blood boil!

very good -- even if they don't have a hoity-toity harvard, every city with a college should have a harvard square neighborhood.

edit: just for fun -- you wouldn't have a good shot of the harvard square theater would you (once the home of many famous boston rock shows)?

here's one i found over the 'nets, but its obviously lacking vs your shots!

Damn you Porko!

The whole Boston area seems really confusing to me.

I dig the shots.

Is that where Car Talk broadcasts from?  Someone should tell them that that is a very old joke.

I don't have a shot of that.  Next time I've got the camera over there, I guess.

Excellent photos. Looks like a delightful place to be in nice weather.

thx. and if you can get inside, even better.

of course its probably all carved up as a movie theater now, but you never know what old grandeur you might find.

^ I've seen movies there a couple of times, but never really paid much attention to the surroundings.  I do recall thinking it looked a bit grand, though, so perhaps there is some good stuff you'd like.  I'll definitely try to remember to bring a camera next time.

Awesome pics. Nice 'hood.

Gret photos... I spent one summer working in an office about midway between Harvard Square and Central Square, so the area is very familiar to me. (I may end up back in the area if I'm lucky enough to be admitted to Harvard for grad school next year, but I'm not holding my breath.)

That odd little building on the right-hand side of the photo, with the yellow markings on the door, is the headquarters of the Harvard Lampoon.
