May 11, 201114 yr Moderators: I was sent an incendiary personal message by someone called "Boondoggle". This guy might be DanB or Mark Miller and should be blocked. Here it is: We will outnumber you guys 10-1 tonight. Its over for the streetcar to nowhere boondoggle! The final nail in the coffin will be tonight. RIP Cincinnati Streetcar... I want you guys to know that we will work with you on the Brent SPence boondoggle. No hard feelings after we kill this thing tonight?
May 11, 201114 yr Thanks for posting those. I think that the following analysis is more telling: Portland Along Route: 18,257 -> 28,481 (+10224) City Total: 529,121 -> 583,776 (+54655) 19% of population increase in Portland happened along the streetcar route. Seattle: Along Route: 19,977 -> 27,440 (+7463) City Total: 563,374 -> 608,660 (+45286) 16% of population increase in Seattle happened along the streetcar route. Tacoma Along Route: 2924 -> 4,708 (+1784) City Total: 193,556 -> 198,397 (+4841) 37% of the population increase in Tacoma happened along the streetcar route. All three cities showed an overall population increase. There's a lot missing from there, too. Like, what percentage of census tracts (or land area of the city) are along the streetcar route? Of course, that brings other questions to light, because some census tracts (or land area) would not have as much growth potential. I guess I'm just saying, you can find flaws with any way of presenting the data. So maybe it's just best to make as many charts as you can! :)

May 11, 201114 yr Sadly another wrench has been thrown in the Streetcar plans. The casino stopped construction today. The streetcar alone was expected to get 3 million a year from the casino through taxes.

May 11, 201114 yr Kasich really hates this state No, just its cities. To some fundamentalists, cities should be destroyed: Whenever there are large groups of people living together, the congested conditions always bring out the worst of human behavior. The history of urbanization might very well also be a history of human criminal behavior. From cities of ancient times like Babel, before Sodom and Gomorra, to modern day urban centers, cities foster all types of human perversions. Therefore, the question must be asked, why pick out Sodom and Gomorra from all cities to destroy? http://www.koshertorah.com/PDF/SodomandGomorra.pdf "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
May 11, 201114 yr There is some unbelievable BS coming out of the mouths of the republicans at this meeting right now. Lippert is actually trying to compare the people mover in detroit to a modern day streetcar. Does he really think the people mover is even in the same category?? Please, if you're reading this and you're supposed to speak tonight...Tell them how stupid they are for comparing that joke of a system to a real streetcar system! watch meeting here if not able to attend: http://cincinnati-oh.gov/media/
May 11, 201114 yr Tom Luken kicked out of the meeting for causing a disturbance. Was also photographed wearing a sticker that supported the streetcar. Also, way more supporters than opponents. Winburn says he will hold an emergency meeting every week until his questions are answered. "I was deceived" Ghiz flipped out asking who has the authority to build this. City manager responded "12 ordinances, 7 motions, and one resolution passed to build streetcar. Ghiz still trying to second-guess all that. Lippert citing Detroit People mover as an example not to build it and wanting them to peer review this. Murray cynical
May 11, 201114 yr Having an emergency meeting every week is a great use of city funds, Charlie.
May 12, 201114 yr 23-1 in favor of the streetcar. The 1 said we should use the money to pay for police and fire... SMDH
May 12, 201114 yr Having an emergency meeting every week is a great use of city funds, Charlie. Free air time for his re-election campign.
May 12, 201114 yr An ACLU member made a slit throat gesture sign to one of the supporters according to people on twitter Also, Reinhardt is reporting that Luken was not thrown out. However, there really is a picture of him with a streetcar supporting sticker on him taken before COASTers removed it 33-1
May 12, 201114 yr Everyone is saying anywhere from 36-38 in favor, 5-6 opposed Tom Luken, Mark Miller, Some Reverend, and some other guy. One guy worried about the loss of parking lots in the city and that "Steel wheels on steel rails do not work in Cincinnati."
May 12, 201114 yr 43-4 so far by my count. What is this vote that keeps getting updated? Who is voting? What's the point of the vote? "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
May 12, 201114 yr 43-4 so far by my count. What is this vote that keeps getting updated? Who is voting? What's the point of the vote? Not a vote. Just the number of supporters vs opponents who came and spoke...I apologize for its fluctuation but different people are saying different things. Mayor's aide's official count is 39 in favor, 6 against. Winburn wants to hold more "special meetings" to answer his questions that were just answered in Westwood and Bond Hill. Opponents gameplan is to stall construction for eternity

May 12, 201114 yr I'm very interested to see how the Enquirer reports on this, and if all the childish and unruly behavior from opponents will be noted in the article.
May 12, 201114 yr Will charges be filed against Smitherman? If not, why not? "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
May 12, 201114 yr We'll see how the Enquirer reports. I've been blasting Carolyn Washburn on Twitter... and she has been responding. We'll see though.
May 12, 201114 yr Here's Enquirer reporter Barry Horstman's tweets. A bit of a wise-ass. Fair and balanced. Special Council streetcar meeting has been major PR coup for supporters. But doubtful anyone's mind on either side changed. #streetcar about 2 hours ago via web from Cincinnati, OH 17 of first 18 speakers at special streetcar meeting favor project. But single opponent, Rev. Dock Foster, spoke loudest. #streetcar about 2 hours ago via web from Cincinnati, OH Real winner in Wed night's special streetcar meeting? May 12, 201114 yr Opponents new plan: Find out who works at the FTA District 5 office and email/write them to express their opposition to try to prevent future fed $$ from coming to Cincinnati. "Sharon Northside" is posting it all on the Facebook "CASS" site.

Kinda makes me wonder how much influence from above comes down on him to write skewed articles.
May 12, 201114 yr A majority of FOX 19 10PM news' streetcar coverage was soundbites of Rev. Dock Foster and Charlie Winburn. "It's just fate, as usual, keeping its bargain and screwing us in the fine print..." - John Crichton
May 12, 201114 yr I liked this from 12 April: "Mayor Mallory's pre-hearing take on streetcar funding: "When did passenger rail become a partisan issue?" One possible answer: Nov 2010." I always appreciated his tweets. His off-the-record commentary is pretty good, but his articles can be flaky - which I attribute to the powers that are above him.
May 12, 201114 yr Streetcar meeting shows debate far from settled Only days after Mayor Mark Mallory said Cincinnati's revised streetcar plan would require no further City Council action, the passionate comments and emotions in a packed council chamber Wednesday night made it clear that City Hall is far from seeing the last of the contentious issue. For nearly 2½ hours, an audience of more than 100 - overwhelmingly tilted toward streetcar supporters - largely heard familiar arguments rehashed, with backers characterizing the project as a vital economic catalyst while opponents dismissed it as a risky, ill-timed project. cont "It's just fate, as usual, keeping its bargain and screwing us in the fine print..." - John Crichton
May 12, 201114 yr WCPO's coverage was nearly as bad as WXIX's. WLWT wasn't that bad and included video on the Smitherman skirmish. Anyone see WKRC? "It's just fate, as usual, keeping its bargain and screwing us in the fine print..." - John Crichton
May 12, 201114 yr Smitherman came up to me after the meeting and said I was "misconceived." So I called my mother, who assured me this was not the case. I think he meant to say that I was misinformed. But then, how would he know?
May 12, 201114 yr The Enquirer article reads relatively positive on the events though I haven't gone trolling in the comments yet. I think I'll forego that today.
May 12, 201114 yr i know someone who was interviewed by Fox19 after the streetcar meetings. This person didn't attend the meeting, but Fox19 came up to when he was walking to his car. They asked him he supported the streetcar to which he replied "no". Fox19 then said they wanted to interview him because they wanted to interview a streetcar opponent for their segment. It was on at 6:00 last night. Anyone happen to catch it? I wonder if they even bothered to interview anyone that supports the streetcar.
May 12, 201114 yr This is why the news media is making itself obsolete. There are too many stomach-turning media outlets that make it inconvenient to bother searching for the enlightening ones. The media today is dominated either by stenographers or controversialists. The truth seekers are a dying breed, and we're all less informed because of it. May 12, 201114 yr Unpaid bloggers can be fed information that the mainstream press would not run, but with the exception of Matt Drudge none of these bloggers have the influence equivalent to the mainstream media.

Let me listen for exact numbers. It's the part where she goes (paraphrasing)..."I wasn't for this emergency meeting because I knew it would attract the crazies" Starts at 5:35. "The only people who come out to those things are the crazies who want the streetcar...It turns into a circus" "They were very young...Young like early 20's...They aren't in full time jobs paying taxes...You can't rationalize with irrational people"
May 12, 201114 yr You can't rationalize with irrational people Oh the irony of THAT statement... "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
May 12, 201114 yr I listened to the whole interview- She really made a fool of herself. Aligning yourself with Smitherman?? And the age thing!! She's like 41... she's not even that old! I'm pretty sure most of the common name Streetcar supporters are in their mid 30's...
May 12, 201114 yr Let's see.... Who put on a pro-streetcar lapel sticker and happily posed for photos while wearing it, until a COASTer had him take it off? Tom Luken. Who kept wandering around behind the dais and had to be removed by security? Tom Luken. Who yelled at and insulted the mayor? Rev. Dock Foster and several other streetcar opponents. Who rambled incoherently well past their allotted speaking time? Tom Luken and one of his fellow octogenarians from his nursing home. Who had to be physically restrained by security after a violent outburst? Chris Smitherman. Who yelled at me and made threats to me as I photographed Chris Smitherman's temper tantrum? Smitherman and several of his NAACP lackeys. Yeah, those streetcar supporters are batsh!t-crazy.
May 12, 201114 yr I sent an e-mail to Ghiz's council address letting her know that my family in Hyde Park won't be supporting her political career in the future. You never call your own constituents "crazies" no matter what you think of them.
