August 16, 201113 yr WKRC poll (hope the link works): http://www.local12.com/default.aspx Talk about a flawed poll in more ways than one... The question was: Would you vote to block the streetcar plan? 6PM News results were: Yes 89% No 11% But on their webpage the same question shows results as: Yes 56% No 44% And then on their Facebook page it's: 48% Yes 52% No Evidently what they report on their broadcasts are only phone results. August 16, 201113 yr Amazing!! The Inquirer is officially dead to me. How bout we quit posting links because lord knows this site gives them ALOT of hits. They are not going to print anything different than what they've printed within the past half decade. It's obvious they don't want to know any of the FACTS and wouldn't even print it if they actually researched them. They DON'T want the city to thrive, like other cities that have already committed and are well on their way with rail.
August 16, 201113 yr These are now all over Main and Walnut. Tag takes you to WLW's website. "It's just fate, as usual, keeping its bargain and screwing us in the fine print..." - John Crichton

August 17, 201113 yr ^ So someone go out tonight and take them all down. I mean, people are always asking what they can do, right/
August 17, 201113 yr ^ So someone go out tonight and take them all down. I mean, people are always asking what they can do, right/ Or simply report them to the proper authorities... That should end it quickly EDIT: I saw the pics. One was on top of the streetcar route. Grown men acting like they are 12
August 17, 201113 yr The city did wait until after the public spoke in a referendum -- two years ago. Now these ballot issues are becoming a harrassment, and no one should stand for that. Isn't there some kind of legal precedent that states you can't keep bringing up the same petition in a certain amount of time? Anyone can get 7500 on any issue. If they lose this one, whats to stop them from getting signatures again? Someone on here used to say, in reference to how stupid the ballot initiative process is, that if someone wanted to they could petition to have the city write everyone a check each christmas for 100,000K dollars and that if enough people signed it and it got on the ballot, it would pass and the city would go bankrupt forever. Its true. Its just as frivilous as people suing each other over the stupidest things imaginable.
August 17, 201113 yr Sounds like the same rhetoric we heard last time when COAST was going to "kill" it. They were really successful with that. Mary Kuhl, Chris Smitherman, Tom Luken, Chris Finney - what a bunch of degenerates who never amounted to anything.
August 17, 201113 yr Does anyone know the cost to the city for the streetcar petition? How isn't that another waste of taxpayers money? How is that not being mentioned anywhere?
August 17, 201113 yr Petitions are paid for by private citizens or groups. City will only have to pay to have it on the ballot- it WOULD have been a huge cost if it was on the ballot in May, since it would have forced an entire election around just one issue- because it's on the november ballot, the only cost is adding Streetcar ballot language to ballots.
August 17, 201113 yr BTW- Councilmembers at Streetcar event: Laure Quinlivan Roxanne Qualls Candidates at Streetcar event: Chris Seelbach Kevin Flynn And of course the Mayor & City Manager were there.
August 17, 201113 yr Got an email today on my personal email account...."We will destroy your trolly folly boondoggle hopes and dreams in November" From "[email protected]" I have no idea how someone got my email account address but this is getting ridiculous. These people are mentally challenged.
August 17, 201113 yr I got a similar message. Judging by their spelling and grammar, they apparently have the same feelings about basic literacy as they do about the streetcar.
August 17, 201113 yr If anyone saw the print edition of the Enquirer today, they chose to run a poorly composed photo with Tom Luken "sharing the stage" with Mallory yesterday, then a photo of Luken on the editorial page with a flattering caption. So two photos of Luken and just one of an elected official. Overall the photos of that event were terrible. I'm suspicious that the editors purposefully kept any images that flattered Mallory out of the online slideshow.

August 17, 201113 yr Overall the photos of that event were terrible. The Enquirer has a handful of talented photographers, sadly, they don't use them. So much of their "photography" is done by "journalists" utilizing "Point & Shoots" or their iPhone cameras.

So the private citizens pay to have the petitions counted and ensured that they are accurate? I thought the city had to ensure that the signatures weren't fraudulent?

Ah, the petitions are verified by the County Board of Elections. Since these people are salaried and it's their job, it would be very hard to figure out how much one ballot measure costs. Also, remember Smitherman is actually collecting signatures for the trash fee ban, the mayoral recall & the police merger ban all at the same time all being checked by BoE employees.

I'm suspicious that the editors purposefully kept any images that flattered Mallory out of the online slideshow. Its outrageous they even pay attention to that wacko. Again, I can't believe I live in a town that has a newspaper that's actually on the side of the most extreme, pyschotic, right wingers on the planet. This was supposed to be an exciting event aimed at showing everyone what Cincinnati has to look forward to in terms of its transportation options and instead the Enquirer turned it into a feeding frenzy for COAST nuts. Am I dreaming? Do we really have to deal with this crap?
August 17, 201113 yr Okay...I'm boycotting the Enquirer. Does anybody have any suggestions on where to get relevant Cincinnati and Ohio -centric news?
August 17, 201113 yr ^ Not really. And that's the problem. I think you just have to kind of forrage around these days.
August 17, 201113 yr At this point, I find Soapbox, UrbanCincy, and the Business Courier to be more factual and informative than the Enquirer. I'm done with them, and I'm going to start trash-talking the paper to everyone who tries to buy one at my store.
August 18, 201113 yr It's important to keep an eye on what streetcar opponents are saying. Likewise, everyone knows the COASTers read this forum to get their intel on what the supporters are doing. “All truly great thoughts are conceived while walking.” -Friedrich Nietzsche
August 18, 201113 yr Here is what today's coverage looked like (note the poorly composed photo at right): Luken's second cameo of the day "balances" the heavily edited letter at left:
August 18, 201113 yr Okay...I'm boycotting the Enquirer. Does anybody have any suggestions on where to get relevant Cincinnati and Ohio -centric news? heck, the Hamilton Journal just did a piece on how the perception of crime in OTR is overblown. For Ohio, the Fishwrap has been pointless for years. Dayton, Springfield, Toledo, Columbus & Clevo are all better. CityBeat & to a lesser degree, Streetvibes have a some stuff. You can also get neighborhood newsletters. But, yeah, foraging. http://www.journal-news.com/news/hamilton-news/business-leaders-say-over-the-rhines-crime-stigma-isnt-realistic-1232300.html KRC's Newsmakers, of course... (latest episode had Chris Finney. boy is he lost in his own world)
August 18, 201113 yr The Enquirer is switching to a tabloid print format in 2012: http://cincinnatimonocle.blogspot.com/2011/08/cincinnati-enquirer-afraid-to-use-t.html
August 18, 201113 yr I'll be shocked if the Enquirer even still exists as a print publication when the streetcar has its grand opening in 2013.

August 18, 201113 yr Tom Luken is now demanding a streetcar debate with Mark Mallory. Enquirer cheerleading naturally
August 18, 201113 yr Tom Luken is now demanding a streetcar debate with Mark Mallory. Enquirer cheerleading naturally The quote from Mayor Mallory should be something to the effect of "We've already debated this with you. Now, you're wasting my time and the taxpayers money."
August 18, 201113 yr Having a debate with Tom Luken is like going to a hospital psychiatric ward and trying to carry on a conversation with a paranoid schizophrenic who believes he's a superhero. A debate between the mayor and Tom Luken would either be insanely hilarious or insanely sad.
August 18, 201113 yr I wonder if Tom will talk about the pork chop? “All truly great thoughts are conceived while walking.” -Friedrich Nietzsche
August 18, 201113 yr A national firm is looking to hire several planners for its Chicago office. The specialties are transportation planning and envirnomental planning, and you must have 3-10 years experience. In particular, they are looking for someone is understands control systems for environmental documents. So if you're interested and I know you and could recommend you, please contact me at [email protected]. I'll forward your name to them, and they will contact you. Mark Miller, Stephan Louis and the other trolls on this site need not apply.
August 19, 201113 yr Mark Miller, Stephan Louis and the other trolls on this site need not apply. Would love to read a recommendation letter from you about Mark Miller for that job
August 19, 201113 yr ^ Actually, Mark Miller is a nice guy. Good hardware, bad software. Still runnning DOS.
August 22, 201113 yr So, I'm sure everyone has heard about the police officer who shot a armed suspect on fountain square this weekend and the similar incident up by findlay market the day before? Who wants to bet that in the next day or two the Enquirer will publish an article trying to site these two incidents as reasons not to build the streetcar? I'm waiting for it. Come on BH you know you want to!
August 22, 201113 yr The shooting on Fountain Square was related to individuals trying to get in to the Black Family Reunion. According to Chris Smitherman: "This incident did start at the Black Family Reunion which is a shame. A group of teenage boys tried to throw guns over the walls of the BFR event to avoid the search at the main doors. The security noticed and the boys ran but were followed by the CPD to Fountain Square. Thank GOD the guns did not make it in the Black Family Reunion! The security worked at the doors and the team at the event did a great job."
August 22, 201113 yr In both instances the police officers did their jobs. It would be a different story if someone other than the perpetrator was shot. I think these things actually highlight the need for the streetcar. Especially around Findlay Market where redevelopment and increased foot traffic can help drastically reduce the criminal presence there. “All truly great thoughts are conceived while walking.” -Friedrich Nietzsche
August 22, 201113 yr Agree totally with what you said and thats exactly what our local newspaper SHOULD be emphasizing to help educate the public.
August 24, 201113 yr Let's try to keep this on topic, please. There's another thread on UrbanOhio for general discussion about the news media.
August 24, 201113 yr ^ Thank you!! Has there been a posting on this page about the Cincinnatians for Progress fundraiser Thursday night? I don't remember all the details.
