- High Speed Rail, I don't see that happening in a long time. Aside from Acela on the left and right coasts, are any other high speed lines being built in the US?

Depends on your definition of high-speed rail. See my response at:

I apologize if any of you are getting outrageous, insulting, or disgusting tweets.  Its not me.  Its COAST.

So is there ever a chance that this will get built?

This map probably scares the bejesus out of COAST/ODOT/Kasich/Republicans/highway contractors, all of whom have a vested interest in seeing to it that we don't have any real choices when it comes to mobility. They know that once the intial segment of the streetcar project is built, people WILL ride and demand will build for what's on that map. May that day come soon!

Right, there wouldn't be much opposition if it was destined to fail. If the streetcar really was some piece of crap project that went nowhere, they would have just thrown $150M at it, built it, let it fail, proved to people that it was going to fail and use the failure as an excuse to pull rail funding for a very long time. Especially since $150M is such a small amount compared to the rest of the transportation budget in Ohio.

They want to make Ohio red and Ohio's cities dead. At least that's one camp.

The other camp doesn't want there to be nice things for people who aren't "like them", regardless of whether those things are successful or not.

Either way, it's a culture war issue. And that's where the passion, determination, and persistence comes from. If someone doesn't care or just thinks it's a stupid idea, they gave up the fight no later than the first ballot initiative.

They're terrified of hipsters showing up. he he

It's funny. But it's true.

The streetcar didn't get a dime from the state.

^ Right, but the state probably could have found money for it if they were so motivated.

^ Right, but the state probably could have found money for it if they were so motivated.

Could have? More like did. Then they suddenly became "motivated" to pull it and give (a portion of) it to Kasich's home district instead.

I'm so glad Bortz is no longer on council. With "friends" like him, the streetcar needs no enemies.

Slow down? LOL.

Meanwhile, COAST is criticizing the project for being behind schedule.

Oh, and why is that video on usbank's Youtube channel?

Oh, and why is that video on usbank's Youtube channel?

USBank show is the Business Couriers weekly TV show http://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2012/01/11/brian-patrick-named-host-of-us-bank.html

The quotes from Bortz eeriely mimic those from Ghiz, Winburn, and yes...C____.  Its almost as if he's been coached on what to say.  But why?

Now look what we have here.  On c____'s website, we have C_____ leading a fundraiser featuring....None other than.... Chris Bortz...That's right, Chris Bortz and Chris Finney are leading a fundraiser in support of Wenstrup.

The longer and longer construction doesn't happen, we'll continue to see stuff like this.  Bortz is now in directly in line with C____'s message.  I said this months ago after hearing his appearance on Marc Amazon's show.  Lets hope council is solid in their beliefs because there is a lot going on behind the scenes

^ Because Bortz is going to run for County Commission he's decided to play it up for the township crowd and flip flop on a project that he's vocally advocated  until now. He's the worst type of  self serving hypocrite that there is.

He's a monied whore, just like Sittenfeld. When Sittenfeld inevitably decides to run for higher office, just watch how fast he starts railing against the city and the streetcar.

Smitherman and winburn just called a special financing  of the streetcar session...

Can't link because im on my phone but its on fox19 website

@FOX19Special session announced for City Council on streetcar finances http://t.co/eGXpeh4e

Those two (Smitherman & Winburn) need to fall out of love ASAP.

Smitherman and winburn just called a special financing  of the streetcar session...

"The special session was called by council members Chris Smitherman and Charlie Winburn. In a statement released Wednesday, they said, "The purpose of the meeting is not to talk about concept but tax payer money.  Citizens in the city and region should be concerned that they may pay for the streetcar with their utility bills."

They're all using TOAST's talking points. Of course this is just a publicity stunt because any proposal that Slitherman & Windbag make will be shot down. Don't be surprised to see Sittenfeld go along with these two demagogues, the guy just reeks of wannabe career politician (who wants to move onwards and upwards to County/State office then to Congress) who will tell any given group of people what he thinks they want to hear.

So...is Smitherman going to freak out like last time council called one of these special streetcar meetings?  Are his goons going to make throat-slitting gestures at streetcar supporters again?  Is Wayne Lippert invited?

Throat slitting gestures? Wow. Never heard that one. Talk about pushing the envelope!

Funny when you hear folks like Bortz saying the city needs to "slow down" on the streetcar. That's code for "scuttle the project" because the same folks who would build roads complain about the process taking too long...

#facepalm

Lovely council meeting. throat slitting, Tom Luken got ejected by security, Smitherman had to be restrained from attacking people (Quinlivan?) before he ran out of chambers.

Ghiz later commended Smitherman & griped about crazies that provoked him.

I forget who got the picture.

Smitherman's takeover of white talk radio continues -- he was a guest for a half hour on Brian Thomas's morning show yesterday, then hosted another half hour himself.  Today Thomas said "he agrees with everything Smitherman says".  Today, Smitherman will be Cunningham's guest at 1pm to talk about...the streetcar utility costs.

Meanwhile, Doc Thompson is extolling the proposed speed limit increase, turning it into an attack on the "slow" streetcar. A caller called him out on what the speed limit increase actually is -- a way to get more gas tax revenue in ODOT's pockets -- and he went ape.

The photo above is mine. Smitherman lunged after a streetcar supporter and attempted to assault him, and had to be restrained by security. When he saw me taking the photo, he tried to go after me, and one of his supporters tried to physically prevent me from taking the photo. (Luckily, I'm much taller than she was.)

Smitherman is a mentally-unstable basketcase, and needs to be put away somewhere. He has no business being in any position of leadership.

55 and 700 are really getting annoying.  They increasing the amounts of gasoline on the fire.  Smitherman on both stations seemingly everyday.  Luken, Finney. There's no counter balance.  There's no other opinions.  Fake callers like Nick from Loveland to make the other side seem really stupid.

They have really ramped it up over the last month.  I've never seen such a pathetic and desperate attempt to stop a public project that was approved twice at the polls

The ironic thing is that the "700WLW" crowd always despised Smitherman. Now that he's TOAST's puppet they just love him. Hypocrites.

Sure could use that Fairness Doctrine about now.

I guess we need bodyguards at these meetings now? :wtf:

Chris Smitherman: Equally dangerous on either side of the dais.

So just to clarify, the anti-streetcar meeting is scheduled for:

Friday, January 27th.

2-5PM

In Council Chambers

Spread the word!!

Will this meeting be open to public comment?

I'm pretty sure, yes. So let's be sure to pack the house because Smitherman plans to do the same.

The interest rate the city is paying on the note is 0.1%, you are never going to get a better interest rate than that. Now's the time to build this system.

That is an outstanding interest rate. Cheapest money they could borrow.

These are short term bond anticipation notes-- the city is essentially borrowing from itself if I understand correctly.  There will be a final bond issue that will carry a market rate for municipal debt given the city's bond rating.  The city is not getting a .1% interest rate on this project.

In case you forgot what happened last May....which doesn't begin to capture the Smitherman tirade.  I have to think Channel 5 has some even better footage somewhere.  http://www.wlwt.com/r-video/27862543/detail.html

Chris Finney will be on 700wlw in about 5 minutes to attack the streetcar.

Chris Finney will be on 700wlw in about 5 minutes to attack the streetcar.

I'll be sure not to miss that.

The sooner they can show physical progress on this, the better. It's one thing to try to stop the Streetcar--it's another thing to try to just add costs and delay to the project, to make an expensive project even more expensive.

700wlw bashing of the streetcar/public transportation from their descriptions.  The ones without a description take pot shots(No I did not listen to all of them but judging by the people invited on the show there's a very likely chance they take a potshots)  I posted the ones with Quinlivan via 'city issues' description to showcase 700's 'fairness' to interviewing someone with differing opinions

1/15/11 - 2 hour segment on streetcars

This streetcar has gone up against an unprecedented amount of PR abuse, mis-statements, lies and opponents unchallenged from the largest radio outlet in the region(Also to the Enquirer to some extent) and it has survived thus far.  Simply incredible

^

Sheesh...

...and Chris Smitherman is on the bumpers now as a regular host.  I doubt he's being paid.  His 2-hour show today will be dedicated to the streetcar:

5-7P CHRIS SMITHERMAN

Chris gets into the streetcar to nowhere and how this is going to impact you in the burbs at 5:06

Even with their media allies TOAST couldn't defeat the Streetcar at the ballot box. Now that the election is over the Enquirer has dropped the streetcar issue like it was a hot potato. I don't understand why WLW is still pimping the anti-streetcar crowd so hard, I mean they lost and we won. The issue is settled.

They are attempting to drum up support for their cause in the suburbs by saying the suburbs will be forced to pay for utilities...

Isn't there some kind of conflict of interest or something that prevents Smitherman from pushing his agenda through a media outlet show while on Council?

^ I understand that, but too what end? Yet another ballot issue?? One that the suburbanites get to vote on? Or is WLW just trying to pimp their ratings during an otherwise slow local news season (ie, post election)?

My opinion is just that its a hail mary in terms of stopping the project and its actually a ploy to pimp their ratings...

By the way, Mark Miller is going absolutely ape on twitter so I assume construction is going to start soon.  If anyone wants to see an actual nervous breakdown as it happens, check out COAST's twitter feed the last few days
