Chris Finney was just on 700 WLW...called Milton Dahoney "Bernie Madoff".

Yet again railed against public employees paying pensions...then for the millionth time suggested the pension fund be funded by capital funds, which is illegal.  I mean, when, if ever, will the public come to understand the rationale for general/capital budgets, restricted vs. unrestricted funds, and so on?

You need an education, the motivation to seek facts independently of your studies, and an environment that motivates you to do something, anything other than sit on your porch or call into talk radio every day.  Basically, knowledge isn't going to become contagious all of a sudden.  The world and its inhabitants disappoint from time to time.

Message from the City of Cincinnati via CincyStreetcar Blog

http://cincystreetcar.wordpress.com/2012/05/22/may-2012-construction-update/

Greater Cincinnati Water Works is currently in the process of replacing water mains to allow for construction to begin on the Streetcar. The focus of water main replacement at this time is along Elm Street. Race Street main replacement is scheduled to begin soon.

Elm Street between 12th and Liberty Streets:

Main replacement is taking place currently on the 1400 block of Elm Street

Construction is right on schedule and is expected to be finished by the end of June

Intersection of Elm and Findlay Streets:

Crews are in the process of laying pipe, making their way towards Henry Street

Work at this intersection should be completed by July

The water main replacement that is taking place in order to further progress on the Streetcar is typical replacement that occurs annually. Water Works has coordinated the process in order to minimize costs and reduce inconveniences for Cincinnatians.

Do I understand correctly that they are replacing the main in its current location to save costs later -- but they are not moving it, i.e., out of the path of the streetcar?

I don't know the details of this work but normally when a water main is replaced, the old one remains in service while the new one is built in a new alignment. When the new one is finished, the old one is abandoned. This way, service is maintained during construction.  Presumably, the new main in this case will not conflict with the streetcar.

Cincinnati Water Works tries to keep an eye on other work, especially resurfacing and road widening, and keep a step ahead with water main replacement, so that they don't have to tear up a street that's just been paved.

Makes sense. So the current main could be removed during construction of the tracks.

That's great. I wish all utilities had this type of coordination.

I even wonder if they'll remove the old one.  That would be a LOT of work just to take something out of the ground and fill it back up with dirt.  Pretty sure water mains are about 3 feet underground.

from this picture (from the CityKin blog), it looks like a Streetcar slab is only about 1 foot deep.  Pretty sure they would just go right over the abandoned main.

Normally the old conduit would only be removed if there is a conflict. Often, the old one is filled with sand or some other material to prevent it from collapsing. It's cheaper to fill it than it is to remove it.

The drawback is that after many years, there are lots of abandoned utilities in the street. This is part of the reason why downtown Cincinnati and Over-the-Rhine are so difficult to work in. Don't forget that the historic streetcar rails are usually still there, and they are really expensive to remove.

Think it's the city - the paver - who tries to coordinate around their rotation of repaving.

I can't wait until we're able to get photos like this in Cincinnati.

CityKin is a Cincy blog. IDK if the pic came from there.

Track is not yet being installed in Cincinnati.  That will be one of the last steps of the construction process.

Oh I know it's a Cincy blog and that the pic was from elsewhere. What I meant was that I can't wait for our construction to progress to the rail laying point.

I certainly hope it's not. A far as I know, John does not drive.

No, he doesn't drive.

Well then thank god. Cause that's a big coincidence. Age, race, name.

John does drive from time to time. That said, there are probably a thousand people in/around Cincinnati named John Schneider.

I certainly would feel better if John were to come here himself and confirm it wasn't him. :|

I spoke to John this morning.

Good. Thanks.

Are you sure it wasn't a ghost?

The city has voted to use eminent domain to acquire the property for the streetcar garage.  WVXU says it was a 6-3 vote, but only lists Smitherman as voting against it.  I assume the other two no's were Winburn and Sittenfeld.

Reminds me of when they quoted us on Fox 19 or whatever station. Pales in comparison to what will go down with Brent Spence's monster brother.

Sittenfeld was the other No vote.  "Also voting “no” was Councilman P.G. Sittenfeld, who said he would prefer the city work out the $12 million financing issues with Duke Energy before “moving forward with any significant streetcar expenditures.”

so what's P.G.'s deal? is he for this thing or against it? can't figure that one out. I know for a fact in moved to OTR so he's gotta be atune to all the good things happening in there now...

That doesn't mean he has to automatically give all of his support to the streetcar project. Living in OTR doesn't mean you have to support a particular development. He raised a good point.

PG is a shill, this was obvious before his election and everything he's done or said post-installation has proven this.  His "no" vote has nothing to do with Duke.  PG knows the Streetcar is reality and no longer a maybe.  Sittenfeld wants to give the appearance of fiscal responsibility for his pals on the Westside and possibly a future in Columbus.  Clown all the way.

PG is the worst kind of politician, a wannabe career politician.  He refuses to take a public stand on anything and justifies his votes with BS reasoning.  He is opposed to the streetcar, but will never publicly state it.  It took quite a bit of arm twisting for a friend of mine to pry out his opposition stance on the streetcar.

"Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago." - Warren Buffett

I think PG is falling under Chris Smitherman's "spell".  He's spent too much time worrying about his public image by appearing on 700wlw, that he's starting to fall under the influence of Smitherman.  A LUI(Legislating under the influence) if you will

Smitherman was on WLW with Cunningham today railing against the streetcar. In other news, the Ohio River is wet.

He brought up the city's projected budget deficit and said that we MUST stop the streetcar in its tracks, and stop it immediately. Cunningham, of course, ate it all up. And Cunningham said the majority of the city is opposed to the streetcar and that would have come out in the election if "Yes didn't mean no and no didn't mean yes."

Wash, rinse, repeat.

Get ready for another ballot initiative....This deficit combined with the 700wlw/suburban outrage and Duke Energy stalling on an agreement is the perfect storm for Smitherman to wreak havoc again

^ I don't see how that has anything to do with the streetcar. It didn't or will not cause that.

^ I don't see how that has anything to do with the streetcar. It didn't or will not cause that.

You're right it doesnt. But looking at the dozens of comments from the 700wlw crowd, they are directly blaming the streetcar for the deficit and pension problem. Smitherman has always been an opportunist and I believe he's going to try and capitalize on that anger.  His ego is also hurt from the two failed initiatives so now he's taking it personally. His statement of "we must stop the streetcar" as opposed to his past statements leads me to believe he's got something in the works

$30 million is the cost of the Kennedy Connector project, let's blame that!

$60 million for the Waldvogel Viaduct.

^ If all the negative comments on the Enquirer this morning concerning the looming budget crisis are indicative of public opinion, we might as well brace ourselves for more of Smitherman's destructive grandstanding. (as previously mentioned by both RockyMountainHigh and FakeCinEnquirer)  Even though the majority of this commentary came from either people outside the city or COAST diehards, it nevertheless will serve as the groundswell that will propel Smitherman and his cohorts back into the public eye.  What is there not to understand about this politician; he is a cancer who will not fade away.

On Lisa Wells right now. Same ol same... And he's bashing the Enquirer for "not telling the full story".

Caught the end of it.  He's blaming the streetcar and the atrium for all the problems

"WE MUST STOP THE STREETCAR AND THE ATRIUM"

Can a streetcar ballot initiative be on the ballot after construction has actually started?

It's really true. And while it seems that he actually hasn't done ANYTHING and his only proposals I've heard about have been crap that wouldn't fix a thing, people LOVE that he's MAD all the time about "government".  In all honesty, when it comes to progress in the City of Cincinnati over the next 5 years, removing Smitherman from office in 2013 should be just as important as anything else.  He has the ability to make regular calm moderate people FURIOUS at the great things that are happening in Cincinnati.

Even if Smitherman is replaced by another Republican it will be better.  Being the president of the NAACP he has a larger megaphone than almost anyone who might replace him.

I certainly hope it's not. A far as I know, John does not drive.

Not dead yet.

Have been in Portland with the team that will manage the streetcar'operations. Brad was there. Will soon post some observations about what's going on there including the extension which now takes them to fifteen miles of track. Pretty amazing stuff - headways down to five minutes on the two most active streets come September.

Oh, and I do drive - just don't own a car.

So, about 12 people actually heard him.

Conversation I had with a co-worker:

"If you have any problems, feel free to call me on my cell phone, or use my personal e-mail."

"Why, are you leaving us?"

"Yes, I'm moving to Washington State."

"I had no idea. When are you leaving?"

"Today."

"Wow, that's a bit of a shock. Why are you moving?"

"I really like the Pacific Northwest. I like Portland."

"Are you from Cincinnati?"

"Yes, born and raised here."

"Do you have family here?"

"Yes, my whole family is from here."

"What about you wife?"

"Her whole family is from here. She won't be leaving for another month, though."

"What do you think about Portland's streetcars and light rail?"

"They seem to work well. I've never ridden, though. They look nicer than Chicago's."

"Well, they're newer than Chicago's."

"Yea, I guess that's right. I hear that they are bankrupting the city of Portland, though."

So, he was willing to move there knowing he might end up paying more taxes to fund it. Awesome.

The Cincinnati streetcar is obviously doomed.

When Cincinnati lays off cops due to Kasich's cutting city funding will we be enjoying Kasich's bloody budget cuts?
