Can you give up time 1:00p - 4:00p on Saturday or Sunday to knock on doors for Roxanne?

She has a major citywide canvassing operation underway this weekend. Like all close elections, this one will come down to the sum of a lot of individual efforts.

Go here and fill out this short form:

This election is about a lot more than the streetcar. Think about it.

Here is a coincidental and positive benefit to the streetcar system's ongoing construction.

Streetcar Digging Unearths Leaking Gas Pipe

POSTED ON NOVEMBER 1, 2013

At the corner of 8th and Walnut Streets, nearby the Main Library, Saint Louis Church, and Taqueria Mercado, workers from Duke Energy discovered a leaking gas line while conducting exploratory digging for the Cincinnati Streetcar project. Crews immediately began repairing the line and installing new equipment.

It just makes no sense whatsoever to even consider cancelling the entire project at this stage.  :wtf:

Oh and here's another working link to the full Cancellation Cost article by the BizJournal:

A sewer that had partially collapsed long ago was also discovered under Elm Street, as reported during the All Aboard Ohio tour of the streetcar construction Oct. 26.

I will be out personally knocking on over 100 doors this weekend. The lit that is handed out is a compilation for many of the supportive candidates so you are killing numerous birds with one stone. If everyone reading this were to join me, I would guarantee a victory. Remember we are looking at an all time low voter turnout expected. WE CAN BE THE DIFFERENCE! Please join me at 1pm today and tomorrow at Qualls HQ 2718 Woodburn. The weather is going to be great, no Bengals game, and it's really easy. People appreciate seeing a representative of the campaign at their door. It makes them feel a part of the process.

Also, there are phone lists that can be picked up to make phone calls to selected voters between now and Tuesday. This would be a great Monday evening project or for someone who is unable to walk.

Finally, getting out the vote is crucial. Please click on going to this event and then click on invite friends. This is a way to create a dialogue via social media to get people motivated to get out and vote! https://www.facebook.com/events/439849836121325/440626936043615/?notif_t=like

Yep... MSD knew there was a sewer leak somewhere, but weren't sure where. When they dug up Elm Street for the streetcar, they found it.

It's not too late to make a small contribution that will help buy air time in last hours of the campaign.  If you're a procrastinator like me, now is the time!  Contributing money takes less than 2 minutes via these links.  If you care about the streetcar project (and about not having the city's momentum in general reversed), put your money where your mouth is:

      http://www.roxannequalls.com/home/contribution.html

      https://secure.pledgeconnect.com/donation.aspx?cincinnatiansforprogress

I've contributed twice (I live way outside Cincinnati). How did the canvassing go today (Derek) ? I really hope Qualls can pull this out.

Canvassing went great today. We again had over 50 people out (wish it would have been twice that) but the weather was in our favor. You would be surprised how many people say they are still discussing/considering who to vote for. I was up in Hartwell/Carthage today and was convinced that I was the first rep of any campaign to be there. People appreciate that face to face contact.

There is still time to make phone calls to get out the vote. The bottom line is that if Qualls' voters show up she'll win. Please stop by the campaign office tomorrow and pick up a phone call sheet. Then call people from the script from home tomorrow evening. Most are likely Qualls voters who just need to be urged to show up. Now is the time to give just a couple hours to the future of our city. The momentum is ours. Please help. 2718 Woodburn is the campaign HQ address.

This section of track is completely done. The stretch of Elm Street in front of Music Hall is going to look amazing once the granite pavers are reinstalled:

Rebar stretches another block-and-a-half north (roughly to Odeon Street):

Very nice! For some weird reason the finished track still looks significantly lower than the street next to it. Must be an illusion.

When it is the time frame for crossing Liberty?

Sorry if this question had been asked and answered, but is the width of the new streetcar rails different from the old rails?  Simply curious.

The Enquirer still hasn't covered the story of tracks in the ground. Clearly the puppet masters gave the order not to, probably for fear it would influence tomorrow's election.

Speaking of tomorrow's election, this is a good time to remind everyone who you need to vote for if you support this project:

      MAYOR:

      Roxanne Qualls

CANDIDATES FOR CITY COUNCIL (elect nine):

      Supporting the streetcar:

      Chris Seelbach (I)

      Yvette Simpson (I)

      Laure Quinlivan (I)

      Wendell Young (I)

      Shawn Butler

      Michelle Dillingham

      Greg Landsman

I heard last week (on Cincinnati Edition?) that the average Cincinnati voter only selects about 6 council candidates.  Make sure that you pick ALL EIGHT of the above.  Pick someone else that you like, someone that will surely be re-elected, or no one for your 9th; no point in sending random votes to anti-streetcar candidates competing for the 7/8/9 slots.  A 5-4 majority of streetcar supporters could make all the difference in the world for this project, whereas a 4-5 minority could be a disaster.

The polls open at 6:30 AM and close at 7:30 PM, so make sure you get out there and let your voice be heard.  NO EXCUSES!  There's too much on the line this time.  Cranley and an anti-streetcar majority could get elected to 4 year terms.  Make sure that you carve 20 minutes out of your day tomorrow to make sure that doesn't happen.

6.7 is the average number of Council members people vote for in Cincinnati.

Please don't give PG any extra votes, he'll be the top vote-getter no matter what. He's been probably, the biggest disappointment on city Council. He cosponsored, with Cecil, a foreclosure registration plan and removed one company from the city's List of licensed tow trucks. All of that in two years. He could have done so much more.

He also voted against every single budget, all of the capital plans, etc.

He hasn't ever been the deciding vote on anything before Council and only votes in either the super majority or minority. His entire style is to just make everyone like him, never piss anyone off, and focus more on things like communit basketball games then on moving our city forward through legislative improvements.

CHris Smitherman releases a response to that attack ad played on the buzz.  In it, he mentions that 85-90% of African Americans do not support the streetcar

It's impressive how smoothly he pulls this from his ass

Believe me, I don't like him either.  But he's sure to get re-elected anyway, so any votes that end up going his way don't go to someone who could tip the balance on council.  But your point is well taken, so I've removed his name from my original post.

Lets be honest, PG will be elected.  I think Charlie Winburn is a shoe in as well.

That's 2 anti-streetcar votes right off the bat.

3 with Slitherman

I swear, Slitherman & The Windbag aren't fit for the Tremont City city council...

Having them wield power in a large city is mind boggling

I think Smitherman is very vulnerable this election.  Sure he's got the tea party/GOP/700wlw vote, but a LOT of people are turned off by him.  Also he barely made it last time

He finished 8/9 last time. I think there are some strong candidates who could take him off council (Landsman, Dillingham, Moroski, and Mann)

Agreed.  I don't Smitherman is a shoo-in.

Winburn and PG are about as close to "locks" as there are .

My knowledge of statistics breaks down at this point, but would there be some advantage to throwing the 9th vote to someone specific versus only picking 8 candidates, especially if it can displace Smitherman?  Like a lesser of two evils kind of thing?

I disagree with the approach that some people have been discussing above. You should only vote for the candidates that you actually want to be on council. Don't dilute the vote by filling out your ballot with mediocre candidates.

This is because all of your council votes are "equal"; you are not ranking the candidates in order of preference. So your vote for a mediocre candidate could cause them to get more votes than a good candidate you actually want to win.

Depends on your priorities, but if your priority is to support the streetcar, voting for only 8 is the best option. If your priority is to get rid of Smitherman, voting for 9 is the best option. An impotent Smitherman is better than an anti-streetcar majority with no Smitherman, IMO.

Is there a rule on radio for having political candidates on?  Like an equal airtime rule?

I feel like Cranley has been on 700wlw way more than Qualls recently

It's really weird watching that video.  Because of the way his mind connects dots, his logic is very abstract and in a very odd way it reminds me of Sandra Queen Noble.  She has obviously gone off the deep end, but from my perspective I could see Smitherman ending up like her if he's pushed into a corner much more.  I know Smitherman's record pretty far back, but I've only paid attention to his live speaking and mannerisms in the past two years.  Has anybody noticed if he's gotten more illogical and paranoid with time, or if he's always been like this?

Last Wednesday, Cranley was on 700 on Cunningham's show.  I don't know if Qualls was on with Cunningham at the end of last week or not, but Cunningham made some sort of comment that Qualls would be coming on with him sometime between that time and tomorrow.

>Lets be honest, PG will be elected.  I think Charlie Winburn is a shoe in as well.

Also the two who have raised the most money.  PG is simply from a wealthy and well-connected family, whereas Winburn is from a poor background but followed Ken Blackwell's precedent back in the late 1970s...by affiliating himself with the Republican party, despite not actually standing for anything, he gets all of the Republican financial support and many votes while still getting some votes from black Democrats for merely being black.  Blackwell nearly rode this strategy into the Governor's office, but Winburn is too whacky to ever be a mainstream candidate for state office.

>Is there a rule on radio for having political candidates on?  Like an equal airtime rule?

Oh, like The Fairness Doctrine?  Hell no, it was tossed in 1987.  There is also something called the Equal Time Rule, but it doesn't matter much today.

I highly doubt that.  Qualls and Cunningham do not get along from what I hear.  Cunningham always uses that "Sports" yell clip from Qualls.

Qualls will go on Scott Sloan's show but I highly doubt she'll go on Cunninghams

The FCC stopped enforcing the Fairness Doctrine in the late 1980s. That's what opened the floodgates on all this toxic News Entertainment rhetoric. Any equal time provided by the media is merely voluntary.

Cobblering the cobble stone.

^ Now that is slick.

John Cranley is now doubling down on Christopher Smitherman.

He shared Smitherman's latest anti-streetcar anti-everything conspiratorial rant against The Buzz, Jeri Tolliver, & Rob Richardson on his campaign's facebook page

Guess who the first like is?  Mark Miller...Treasurer of COAST

This tea party group,  Citizens for Informed Voters, with a 23 year old treasurer C Ritter is buying up air time on the buzz and saying that 80% of Ppl are against the streetcar.  It attacks quinlivan and seelbach specifically.

I don't know which thread to put this in, but I sent a letter to my close friends and family with a list of candidates supporting the streetcar. This was my mom's response:

The Enquirer had this list last week.  Your dad pulled it out and I made copies to take to the poll tomorrow.  Earlier I got a call from Roxie's camp making sure they could count on my vote.  They have had a lot of negative things to say about a-hole Cranly and how expensive it would be to cancel the streetcar.  The city would lose millions.  I think Foxy Roxie will be OK.

I hope the Enquirer had an accurate list.

My mom does not follow this stuff closely, so I hope she is indicative of other random Cincinnatians. The fact she was called by a Qualls campaign worker gives me a good feeling.

OK, everybody! It's crunch time. I'm a Butler County resident who can't vote for this election, so I want all the Cincinnati residents here to vote for these candidates. Just a friendly reminder.

Mayor - Roxanne Qualls

Council -

Yvette Simpson

Chris Seelbach

Laure Quinlivan

Wendell Young

Greg Landsman

Michelle Dillingham

Mike Moroski

Shawn Butler

Kevin Johnson

All these people do not oppose the streetcar...and support generally progressive policies. This is the streetcar ticket, for better or for worse.

Here's a video I found on YouTube with footage from construction today (including paver reinstallation)- I think it was filmed on a bike ride from 12th and Elm to Race and Henry:

They're the same people who tweeted me on Sunday, reminding me to turn my clocks back -- to the 1600s! <<rimshot>>

This tension breaker was brought to you by the folks at All Aboard Ohio. We can't tell you who to vote for, but we do encourage you to vote. The more people who vote, the less the outcome can be attacked by the losing side. And the polls suggest that the more people vote, the happier the folks on this board will be. Do your part to get friends, family, co-workers and neighbors to a polling booth.

Me too.  Worried about the turnout

Don't forget that the polls are open until 7:30 PM.  So if you're reading this at work, you can still vote on your way home.  Make sure you get to the polls today.  We can't stress enough how crucial every single vote is this time.

Atlantic Cities features the streetcar-politics connection in Cincy:

The Streetcar at the Heart of the Cincinnati Mayoral Race

Of the many vital civic matters that might decide a local election, you wouldn't expect a streetcar to be at the top of the list. But that's exactly what's happening in Cincinnati, Ohio. Whether or not city residents vote for John Cranley and Roxanne Qualls — both very qualified candidates from the same party — may well come down to how they feel about the city's streetcar plan....

Tweets from Kevin Osborne: "In Cincinnati's early voting, 66% of people who've voted are age 60 or older."

"In Cincinnati's early voting, 21% of people who've voted are ages 45-59"

I don't take this as a good sign...

sheesh... that would make ~87%  of early voters aged 45 and older.

As someone who has covered elections since 1994, I discovered that older voters vote early. Younger voters vote later -- during the lunch hour, after work, etc.

Hopefully. I voted this morning near UC and there were only 6 or so other people voting the entire time I was there. Didn't see a single signature in the book when I signed in, either.

Honestly, anecdotal evidence is not very helpful... In 2012 my polling location in OTR wasn't very busy.

Also, German Lopez just posted this:

Early reports suggest decent turnout. That's typically to Democrats' advantage.
