December 19, 201311 yr Amazing. A big THANK YOU to everyone who called and wrote, everyone who collected signatures, everyone who signed petitions, and everyone who kept their heads held high and worked to move forward. i'm so proud of my city right now.
December 19, 201311 yr We need to all immediately write to, call, and THANK all over our council members (and even Cranley). We're very lucky to have avoided the embarrassment of cancelling this project. It was a close call! Drinks Tonight!!!!!! BTW Cranley just had a funny Freudian slip!

Yes, THANKS EVERYONE!!!!!!!! Pat yourselves on the back.
December 19, 201311 yr Kevin Osborne @kevinwcpo 32s Cranley: Says Flynn brokered deal to get $9M in private money for operating costs; praised him for his efforts "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
December 19, 201311 yr Here's the best thank-you for Flynn I can think of: streetcar supporters throw him fundraisers to help him retire his campaign debt.
December 19, 201311 yr Held, I would think. No need for them now. I'd love to know the final tally, though.
December 19, 201311 yr We get the final announcement on page 656 of this thread. 22,944 posts, 1,338,382 views. That's not counting the six months of lost posts/views from early 2013.
December 19, 201311 yr It's now time for the entire city to pull together and see that this project is a success. Regardless if you are for or against it, there's no point in being a detractor. And hopefully this also includes Cranley himself. And Smitherman. And Murray. And Winburn.

December 19, 201311 yr This thread had more drama than Dirty Sandpit & C-Dawg rants put together. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

December 19, 201311 yr All Aboard Ohio @AllAboardOhio 7m The #cincystreetcar waiting is like the scene at the end of Apollo 13 when everyone is waiting to see if the astronauts lived or died.
December 19, 201311 yr You will get a streetcar! -- And yes, I'm glad that this streetcar drama has come to hopefully a close and that work can proceed. Whether planning for an extension up the hill is up in the air but this is a good start.
December 19, 201311 yr P.G. Sittenfeld @VotePG 51s There is exactly 1 item on today's Council agenda. And it will pass. pic.twitter.com/aMNcgDePv4 "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
December 19, 201311 yr I would also like to thank the members of this board. The outpouring of support over the past several years, and especially the past couple weeks has truly been an awesome thing to behold. Thank you everyone who gathered signatures, wrote to your councilmembers, and spread the word about the viability of this project. You all are awesome!
December 19, 201311 yr I think this entire thread needs to be retired, with the Oprah gif being the final post.
December 19, 201311 yr I think this entire thread needs to be retired, with the Oprah gif being the final post. Thread should be renamed to construction of the streetcar or something.
December 19, 201311 yr Cincinnati Streetcar is here  It's not here yet. Not trying to be pessimistic, but like the villain at the end of the credits… COAST is already hinting at another ballot initiative. Today the battle was won, but the war goes on folks.
December 19, 201311 yr EVERYONE: PLEASE MAKE SURE TO THANK THE MEMBERS OF COUNCIL WHO VOTED FAVORABLY. This is a GREAT day for Cincinnati!!!

Not trying to be pessimistic, but like the villain at the end of the credits COAST is already hinting at another ballot initiative. Today the battle was won, but the war goes on folks. I agree. There's nothing stopping them from doing another Issue 9/48 that interferes with this project and certainly any future one. Plus, Cranley surely has other tricks up his sleeve. Him saying "we will" means nothing.
December 19, 201311 yr I left my computer for two hours and could only check Twitter on my phone. I came back and there were 3 unread pages on the streetcar thread. This is an incredible day for Cincinnati. Hopefully we can continue to progress the city forward. Let's do this!
December 19, 201311 yr Council chambers is SRO as council proceed to pass the measure (as posted in a pic on the previous page) on emergency which mean no 3 readings at separate council meetings. So it is being passed today. Construction restarts on Monday....... Thanks to Paige E. Malott @Paigetastic01 for the photo: "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
December 19, 201311 yr The ordinance today will pass as an emergency ordinance, so it will not be subject to referendum. However, you can bet that COAST and friends are working on some crazy charter amendment to put on the ballot next year... trying to ban all future spending on any rail project within city limits, or something like that.

Not trying to be pessimistic, but like the villain at the end of the credits… COAST is already hinting at another ballot initiative. Today the battle was won, but the war goes on folks. This is a definitely a moment of celebration for those who support this. But, as long as this project remains unpopular in the city overall, its final fate is not certain. Many of us have to think move this thing forward with our heads (because of cost to kill), while our hearts tell us that the city should pull the plug on this. I just don't understand why this project has been so controversial, unlike the MLK exchange, that most everyone sees as worth the investment by the city. People in support of this better continue selling this, because there are many in this city who disagree, and the majority may wind up inserting itself into this project again before it is over. A project being built with this much ill will has every reason not to become a success....
December 19, 201311 yr The grassroots effort that it took to make today possible has been absolutely incredible to witness. There were many, MANY dark days in the past month, but today it feels like the light has finally burst through. If COAST or any other group wants to bring another ballot initiative forward, so be it. I think everyone is more or less worn out on the issue, and I think it'd be a steep climb to drum up widespread support for stopping it at this point, with the media and council both who were actively against the streetcar now being in support of it. Personally, I wouldn't mind not hearing another thing about the streetcar until the cars are rolling down the tracks. Congrats to Cincinnati for doing the right thing. Thank you to all of the supporters and especially to John Schneider. You deserve a nice vacation.
December 19, 201311 yr I'll worry about a possible third referendum if and when it happens. COAST reads this board and there's no point in getting anyone whipped on that idea. Thank you to all of the supporters and those who worked tirelessly to get this done. And thank you even to the detractors, who I hope were doing so out of an honest concern for our region, despite our visions of the future being so disparate.
December 19, 201311 yr I think COAST would have a hard time getting enough signatures at this point. Too much money already spent.
December 19, 201311 yr I think COAST would have a hard time getting enough signatures at this point. Too much money already spent. They got (what they'd consider) a dream-team council elected, who STILL voted to keep the project going....
December 19, 201311 yr On behalf of All Aboard Ohio, I thank everyone in Cincinnati for their incredible outpouring of energy, optimism and organization in making this happen. Getting 1,000 people to "line the line"? Getting nearly 12,000 petition signatures in a week? Working behind the scenes with potential funders and lawyers to provide backstops? You pulled victory from the jaws from what at times seemed certain defeat. Incredible, all the way around. You are all an inspiration. Have a happy holidays and prosperous new year! I'm not traditionally a religious guy, but bless you John Schneider for your perseverance and wisdom, and Ryan Messer and others at WBIC for your passion and helping the rest of us to share our voices.
December 19, 201311 yr Congrats guys! Let's hope this is the last of the hurdles for this project. This. Don't be overly confident this is the end, people. We've seen a ton of "ends" to this.
December 19, 201311 yr Just curious. Let's say COAST decides to try a third round of voter approval. What's the timeline there? Is it May, like the pro-streetcar charter amendment? Is there any indication of how much spending the project will have been incurred by then? I guess what I'm getting at is where is the point of no return, even for COAST?
December 19, 201311 yr German Lopez @germanrlopez 40s Council restarts streetcar project in 6-3 vote. 91.7 WVXU @917wvxu 30s #CincyStreetcar For: Young, Flynn, Mann, Seelbach, Simpson, Sittenfeld. Against: Smitherman, Winburn, Murray. Passes. Chris Wetterich @ChrisCinciBiz 1m A round of applause from the audience. Onward! December 19, 201311 yr Here is a link to the COAST website. Read the post from 8:30 this morning: http://coast-usa.blogspot.com/2013/12/music-for-cincinnati-streetcar.html Things can change a lot in 6 hours.
December 19, 201311 yr Cindi Andrews @cindiincincy 34s .@BelieveInCincy's @ScottSAllison sez petitions will be shelved: Our goal was never to go to battle. Our goal was to get a streetcar. December 19, 201311 yr Congrats guys! Let's hope this is the last of the hurdles for this project. This. Don't be overly confident this is the end, people. We've seen a ton of "ends" to this. I'm willing to stake my personal and professional opinion that this is the end of the streetcar construction debate. You've already seen significant voices in the community start to change their tune based on the enormous amount of money that would have been wasted had they stopped now. Stopping next year would be a non-starter. Truly the only challenge now will be to make it a successful project.
December 19, 201311 yr So is WLW melting down yet? Alex from the HamCo Republicans called in and said that "if future phases don't happen there will be more money for cops so that 3-year-olds don't get murdered in Avondale". I'm so glad I moved my antenna to pull in the station.
December 19, 201311 yr I'm very pleased with the outcome, but still up for a recall. Cranley has proven himself an unfit leader IMHO.
December 19, 201311 yr I'm very pleased with the outcome, but still up for a recall. Cranley has proven himself an unfit leader IMHO. I say let's wait and see how he continues to conduct himself after he just got overruled. He campaigned hard on stopping the streetcar and won, after all. So let's see if he continues to be obstructive in non-streetcar areas. He can't be recalled until after a year, anyway.
