^They used a truck like that to tow the streetcars around before the overhead was finished.  I assume they were able to power the streetcar's turn signals and brake lights at the very least.  In the case of a storm or someone crashing their car into a catenary pole, I assume they could get it back up and powered fairly quickly, even if it requires a slow zone and some temporary guy wires and such.

This is the "only accident of this magnitude so far" regarding the streetcar, said Sallie Hilvers, spokesperson for Cincinnati Metro.

Wouldn't be surprised to see separation features like this in the future: https://www.google.com/maps/@45.5192554,-122.6792042,3a,37.5y,271.1h,70.4t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s7WOgo-uqg3KUEPFVjDn7Kg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

Apparently the car turned right on red straight into it. But of course the article doesn't say, "car collided with streetcar" it says, "streetcar collided with car" implying the fault being the streetcar's.

I hope the streetcar plows through every suburbanite who is driving illegally. We should install a cattle catcher for this purpose

Some sort of bollard would probably be wise for sections of downtown that are particularly high traffic. People drive so horrendously around the ballpark on game days, so these types of accidents are bound to happen. Just curious, anyone know if it was a KY driver who hit the streetcar? Seems the most egregiously bad drivers I spot around the city have Kentucky plates like 90% of the time.

Alabama apparently.

If the car driver was at fault, will their insurance have to cover the costs of repair to the streetcar?

^I would think so.

Can you imagine the premium hike that dude's about to get? I would be curious to know what kind of # we're talking about there.

As a side note, I'm pleasantly surprised I didn't hear any gut-instinct reactions out of city hall about this crash. I was just waiting for WCPO to tweet "Cranley criticizes the unsafe streetcar train as a boondoggle. More at 6." Not to say that he still won't—I guess he's got a few more things on his plate at the moment.

As a native Kentuckian, I must say that while we don't like to use turn signals or wear shoes while we drive, at least we don't sit in the left lane going 55mph all the time OHIO! Somebody at work once said, "I hate Kentucky drivers, they are always passing me on the right". To which I said, "That's because you're always going too slow in the fast lane, if you just moved over once in a while you would get passed on the left!".

There's little in the way of legal repercussions or enforcement against left lane blockers in Ohio.

The driving ability pecking order goes like this: KY, OH, ...............................IN. Hoosiers are abysmal drivers...at least the ones we have in SEIN.

Wait, Kentucky drivers criticizing Ohio drivers?  Kentucky?  Kentucky drivers are terrible.  I agree with the statement about Ohio drivers staying in the left lane going 55mph (that is truly annoying) but Kentucky drivers can't even stay in a lane properly.

This thread has become excellent/depressing evidence of how out-group bias leads to over perceiving the faults of groups perceived as "other":

Let's move back to talking about the Streetcar, please.

^Exactly. KY drivers always doing the peek-around b/c OH driver is in left lane rolling 55. Drift left...hope he gets the message to get over. Drift right...is there room to pass on right? ;)

I'm pretty sure bollards are going to be installed on 2nd Street preventing cars from using the transit-only lane. But I don't think they'll be installed on any of the other transit-only lanes. For example, the one at Government Square is also used by buses, so you couldn't really put bollards there.

One other note on the crash -- I have seen a number of people online asking why there has not been a public outreach campaign educating drivers on how to drive near the streetcar route. If you see these type of comments, please respond and let people know that there is nothing special they have to do other than obey traffic laws. If you are stopped at a red light, don't go through it. If you see a "no right on red" sign, don't turn right on red. If you see a transit-only lane, don't drive in it. End of story. You do not have to learn to interpret smoke signals or hand gestures. Just obey the traffic laws you should already be following.

I have also seen a few people commenting that they have "seen the streetcar run red lights". Again, if you see something like this, please do your best to educate the person that there are some intersections where all car traffic is stopped and the streetcar has the right of way. Some guy on Twitter yesterday was claiming that the streetcar made a left turn from the right lane while car traffic had a green light. That's completely false. It turns out, traffic engineers are pretty smart. They would never give two conflicting movements the right-of-way at the same time.

Indeed to what taestell said. We traffic engineers are in fact smart. Some of us even advocate for Bike and Pedestrian features! But, signals have conflict monitors to through a signal into flash should two conflicting indications occur. It's a fail-safe.

TrafficControlBox.JPG

Interestingly, this is an ODOT controller cabinet. The signal controller is the Eagle Device on the left, the Conflict Monitor is on the right.

I'm pretty sure bollards are going to be installed on 2nd Street preventing cars from using the transit-only lane.

That would definitely help, although at 5:15 today I watched a car drive through the right turn lane at Walnut and continued into the transit only lane and down to the Riverfront Garage at Pete Rose Way. Being a game day pass holder, I figured they knew better but didn't care.

This month's Cincinnati Magazine takes a nice dig at The Enquirer's streetcar coverage.  Basically calls them out for sensationalizing every minor issue.

Uh oh, might not be long until the Enquirer buys it to shut 'em up and turns it into an all paint-all-your-houses-trim-white and restaurant showcase magazine like what happened in Columbus.

Lol I don't think the Enquirer could buy so much as a pack of gum at this point.

Mo Egger was going on and on about how the streetcar is "ugly" and "almost killed" his friend. Never mind that his friend made an illegal right on red in front of the streetcar. He could've been hit by a bus or a semi truck, it just happened to be a streetcar in this case.

It's amazing how all these big tough guys are so afraid of stuff.

Flying Pig Marathon...thanks Obama:

I just caught wind of a major exterior name and advertising rights deal with a local company. Includes exterior ads, naming rights for the line, and an on-board amenity... I don't want to give too many specifics in case the wind is wrong. But if it's correct, it's huge!

Such a tease! Did the wind also bring with it a possible announcement date?

Edit: I have no idea why but when you said, "on board amenity" for some messed up reason my brain went straight to Pure Romance...

^haha. My first thought was a Rhinegeist beer tap. Then I thought of a Busken bakery doughnut display.

I was not told an announcement date, but it's a large local company that has existed in Cincinnati for the last 100+ years.

On-board amenity...has to be P&G, right? I'm thinking like hand sanitizer or wet wipes or something. I can't think of anything else unless 5/3 is planning a streetcar ATM lol.

Or Cincinnati Bell sponsoring free wifi.

Kroger could give out maps to their next "biggest store" development and cover their ears when people ask about a proper store Downtown.

Or Cincinnati Bell sponsoring free wifi.

If this is correct I wonder if Nick Lachey will come back to emcee the grand opening.

www.cincinnatiideas.com

Kroger handing out false hope, Western and Southern handing out demolition permits, Macy's giving pink slips... But seriously, P&G and hand sanitizer sounds to be the winner here.

It is Cincinnati Bell per Enquirer.

edit: $3 million 3.6 over 10 years. Announcement Friday.

300k per year is nothing. That's a steal for them. But that's a nice chunk of change for the project! The on-board amenity I mentioned is on-board wifi.

and Cincinnati Bell Connector is the new name

PRESS RELEASE

http://www.go-metro.com/news/715/58/Cincinnati-Bell-Named-Sponsor-of-the-Cincinnati-Streetcar

CINCINNATI – Cincinnati Bell has signed a naming rights agreement that will transform the Cincinnati Streetcar into the Cincinnati Bell Connector.

Advertising Vehicles -- which has the contract with the Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority to sell the naming rights and advertising on the Cincinnati Streetcar -- announced the naming rights contract today. Revenue from the naming rights will be used to help fund streetcar operations.

Cincinnati Bell will pay $340,000 per year for 10 years under the agreement. The contract will provide the following:

• The Cincinnati Streetcar will be renamed the Cincinnati Bell Connector.

• The look of the streetcars will change, with Cincinnati Bell graphics on the front, back and top, as well as inside the streetcar. The current logo and colors will no longer be used.

• Streetcar stations will be rebranded as Cincinnati Bell stations.

and new logo. Metro is on the ball.

and Cincinnati Bell Connector is the new name

The concept of a new name reminds me a bit about how the Sears Tower is no longer named the Sears Tower.

The Enquirer says the colors and logo will be changed, I guess they'll be some kind of green and blue instead of the orange they are now? At least the Steelers colors arguments will be squashed now, do we have any beef with the Seahawks I'm forgetting about? It will align the colors with Metro, which is what I always thought seemed like a reasonable idea.

I'll admit, as happy about this as I am I'm not really all that thrilled to see the logo go. It's WAY better than that blue and green thing above. Blue and green just look terrible together. I don't get why it's so prevalent here. It looks cartoonish. The current logo and color scheme look amazing.

I'm trying not to be negative since this is all such good news...I just really don't like that branding...

This is a horrible precedent as it portends the branding of a future regional network.  It insults the grassroots effort that got this thing built by giving the name and design to an anonymous, boring corporation.
