September 12, 200915 yr I like the photoshop work. Those overhead wires aren't even noticable! Photoshopping those in would take more time than photoshopping the streetcars themselves.
September 12, 200915 yr I like the photoshop work. Those overhead wires aren't even noticable! Photoshopping those in would take more time than photoshopping the streetcars themselves. in Portland? Photoshopping is an art. I am working on this streetscape project and the client demands a before and after image of the streetscape...no renderings allowed. Try photoshopping existing trees out of a picture and putting new trees into it and filling in the gaps with whats behind the old trees. Bah!
September 12, 200915 yr I like the photoshop work. Those overhead wires aren't even noticable! The truth is, modern streetcar wires are seldom very visible. Check out the pics here, taken under all colors of skies, and see for yourself: http://www.pro-transit.com/PICS/
September 12, 200915 yr It's being reported the anti-rail ammendment will be Issue #9. Get the word out: NO on 9!!! Since there's a strong German community in Cincinnati, why not say -- Vote "nein" on Nine "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

September 12, 200915 yr Author I like the photoshop work. Those overhead wires aren't even noticable! Photoshopping those in would take more time than photoshopping the streetcars themselves. You're right. I've tried the wires, but in the pictures they are only a few pixels wide, so even if you can isolate them you have some background sky that causes it to stick out. The pantographs are hard enough.
September 12, 200915 yr "The truth is, modern streetcar wires are seldom very visible." I know, I know! I was kidding. In Germany, I made a point of looking for the streetcar wires. They are not intrusive at all, and a street with streetcar wires is MUCH more attractive than a street with no streetcar wires but a tangle of electric, telephone, and cable TV lines. The wires were more noticeable when two streetcar tracks ran side by side. They were hardly noticeable at all if the street had trees. "Photoshopping is an art." No kidding. Wires and trees are the hardest to deal with. I photoshoped a photo of a navy ship once, and simply removed all the handrails, antenaes, wires, and rigging because it was too much work to deal with, and it wasn't important to my project. When I published it, I received some letters from former sailors who served on that ship, telling me that the ship looked much better before they removed all the rigging! An interesting tidbit is that sometimes the streetcar wires were removed from old photo postcards.
September 13, 200915 yr I friend of mine was out in San Francisco recently, and grabbed a photo of one of their PCC streetcars painted in the Cincinnati Street Railway colors: It would be cool to see at least one of the new Skoda streetcars done up in the same color scheme.
September 14, 200915 yr Open houses tout streetcar plan Hoping to build public support for a proposed streetcar line from Downtown to Uptown, Cincinnati city officials have scheduled 10 open houses on the plan this fall. The public meetings, which are to begin later this month and will extend through mid-November, will provide forums for city officials to answer questions about the cost, route, operation and potential economic benefits of the proposed streetcar system's $128 million first phase. September 14, 200915 yr great graphic. The only issues I have is clarity. With issues like these, people need to be able to look at the image once and be able to take away its message. With the font you have, it requires a double take to really be able to read it.

September 14, 200915 yr ^ Yes, absolutely awesome idea thomasbw ... but please please please change the font to something more readable. I cannot overemphasize the importance of clarity and readability for political slogans. Are we 100% sure that it's issue #9? "Nein on Nine" is pretty funny, and the regular "No on 9" is also very nice and easy to remember.
September 14, 200915 yr Stand up for Cincinnati, say No on 9! http://caast-usa.blogspot.com/2009/09/stand-up-for-cincinnati-say-no-on-9.html

September 15, 200915 yr Feel Free to use this picture on your blogs Taking out the word "issue" might free up some room & make it a little more readable. Also, I wouldn't push the nein thing a whole lot because a lot of people in town connect anything German to Nazism & racism.
September 15, 200915 yr Also, I wouldn't push the nein thing a whole lot because a lot of people in town connect anything German to Nazism & racism. You really think so? I think people equate the Cincinnati Police with racism more than they do with anything German.
September 15, 200915 yr I created this on my lunch break today. Feel free to copy it, use it, enhance it, modify it, etc. If anybody needs a higher-resolution version of it for posters, yard signs, etc., I've attached a 36"W x 48"H PDF of the text outline below. It can be imported into Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. for further development.

September 16, 200915 yr What happened to the zoo train article? The link on the Enquirer's page is broken.
September 16, 200915 yr What happened to the zoo train article? The link on the Enquirer's page is broken. For some reason, the link changed: http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20090915/NEWS0106/909160341/-1/advertmock/Streetcar+ballot+could+affect+zoo+train If you go by Tairy Greene's assessment, it seems that the charter amendment would in fact affect the zoo train. All you have to do is read the ballot language: http://caast-usa.blogspot.com/2009/09/would-issue-9-affect-childrens-train-at.html
September 16, 200915 yr If this amendment passes, the city won't even be able to replace a light bulb at Union Terminal without first holding a referendum. That's how wide-ranging and insidious this whole thing is.
September 16, 200915 yr Maybe I'm just too rational for what facts we may be dealing with. However, I believe that something like light bulb replacement would fall under the classification of maintenance and not an improvement.
September 16, 200915 yr It would still be enough of a gray area for some jackass like Smitherman or Finney to make a court case out of it if they wanted to, and then the city would have to spend a ton of money fighting a lawsuit even if the court rules in their favor.
September 16, 200915 yr It would still be enough of a gray area for some jackass like Smitherman or Finney to make a court case out of it if they wanted to, and then the city would have to spend a ton of money fighting a lawsuit even if the court rules in their favor. The problem is the WHOLE thing is a gray area. There are no specifics. No details. No provisions. It's a joke. This is not a real piece of legislation. The Cincinnati Enquirer right when they called it "Weasel Wording."
September 16, 200915 yr Author Maybe I'm just too rational for what facts we may be dealing with. However, I believe that something like light bulb replacement would fall under the classification of maintenance and not an improvement. I agree the light bulb is far fetched, but things that are physically attached to the structure would be covered. For example adding a new handicapped accessibility ramp would be an "improvement" to the structure and covered Issue 9. That's one of the reasons why you should vote NO on 9.

For example adding a new handicapped accessibility ramp would be an "improvement" to the structure and covered Issue 9. That's one of the reasons why you should vote NO on 9. Is it? If you are replacing an incandescent light bulb with a high-efficiency bulb, why wouldn't that be considered an improvement? I can make a legal argument that it is and stop it from happening. I think it's ironic that COAST used a bone-wielding caveman to criticize All Aboard Ohio's opposition to Issue 9. It's the pot calling the kettle black, as COAST is what we often call the Citizens Against Virtually Everything, or CAVEmen. September 16, 200915 yr The problem is the WHOLE thing is a gray area. There are no specifics. No details. No provisions. It's a joke. This is not a real piece of legislation. The Cincinnati Enquirer right when they called it "Weasel Wording." Very true. The language is extremely broad and will completely destroy the funding process for anything remotely related to a rail-car. But just to be clear, "the gray area" is NOT about how far reaching this will be. That is very clear. Based on the ballot language, issue 9 WILL cover the streetcar, WILL cover 3-C, WILL cover Amtrak, WILL cover high speed rail to Chicago, WILL cover commuter rail, WILL cover light-rail, and WILL cover the Zoo's train. COAST can try to deny it all they want, but the courts will have to require a public vote for all these projects - even the Zoo train. This will pretty much destroy chances of ever getting federal funding. The biggest irony of the whole damn process is that issue 9 will just make rail MORE EXPENSIVE for Cincinnati whenever it happens. Eventually, voters will approve some form of rail in the future, whether it's in 2 years or 25 years. If issue 9 passes, Cincinnati will have an impossible time getting federal funding, which means that Cincinnati's future rail projects will cost citizens twice as much!!
September 16, 200915 yr Are any of you apart of efforts to spread the truth in Cincinnati regarding this? If you're not, you probably should sign up.
September 16, 200915 yr From 700 WLW's twitter just a second ago: "700wlw: We're being fair! Someone that actually thinks the Cinti Streetcar is a good idea! No kidding. Willie at 1:06pm." I'd skip art class to call in just in case Willy pull's his usual crap and wants me to go to OTR at midnight again, but I can't miss another day of class. Someone should be prepared to call in just in case Miller or Gloyd show up on the air calling it a "coal powered trolley" again. I find it funny that Willy spends so much time dogging Chris Smitherman yet when Smitherman teams up with COASTers he seems to forget how useless Smitherman is.
September 16, 200915 yr Willie is being fair. I'm sure he'll flip quicker than a coin before a football game.
September 16, 200915 yr Don't Forget! Please Attend!! 3C "Quick Start" Passenger Rail Plan PUBLIC OPEN HOUSE MEETING Learn about the project - give input Show up anytime between 4-7 p.m. Thursday Sept. 17 Cincinnati City Hall, Council Chambers 801 Plum Street Please Attend! DO NOT LET OTHERS SPEAK FOR YOU! "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
September 16, 200915 yr ^Isn't that a bit off topic though, or are the 3-C and Cincinnati Railroads threads hidden?
September 16, 200915 yr The correlation is that COAST is getting a bunch of their supporters to attend the 3C public meeting. And as you know, the 3C project is also affected by the anti-rail charter amendment. I hope they don't turn it into another Health Care Shoutfest. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
September 16, 200915 yr The 700 WLW appearance by Cincinnatians for Progress was pretty good. These types of appearances are better than editorials like what the Enquirer run, since a lot more people are exposed to the information.
September 16, 200915 yr ^^Ah, okay. Well, I'm sure we'll hear one of their famous outbursts. Record shows, right?
September 16, 200915 yr Did I miss something? Was there a COAST shoutfest about health care somewhere?
September 17, 200915 yr The 700 WLW appearance by Cincinnatians for Progress was pretty good. These types of appearances are better than editorials like what the Enquirer run, since a lot more people are exposed to the information. That guy was excellent. The more he gets on AM radio the better. Made a great case about the hidden agenda and the rule by referendum problem.
September 17, 200915 yr Did I miss something? Was there a COAST shoutfest about health care somewhere? Aren't all CAVEmen the same? :-P "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
