November 3, 200915 yr http://cincinnatiansforprogress.com/Endorsements/ Thanks, but that is an endorsement for No on 9. I'm trying to see who I should vote for council based a lot on their support for the streetcar. Thanks everyone for the info.
November 3, 200915 yr Interestingly, Anitra Brockman is the Green Party candidate. Her website states she is in favor of the streetcar, so I emailed her to ask her stance on Issue 9, since the SW OH Green Party supports the measure. Her response is below: 'Thank you for taking the time to send me an email before election. Although the green party is saying "Yes" to issue 9, I am saying "No" to issue 9. I believe that we are only getting in the way of the city progressing if we say "Yes"...' Well, good for her. Nice to see someone break from the party line.

November 3, 200915 yr Somebody remind me to pick up something from the liquor store on my way home this evening. Regardless of the election results, I'll be in the mood for a stiff drink or three.

November 3, 200915 yr It drives me crazy waiting for the returns to come in. Makes for a very long day. Even though there's really no news until the polls close, I can't keep myself off the local blogs and message boards...
November 3, 200915 yr Y'all relax. Go drink a couple beers. I'd imagine you'll start to get a good sense around 8:30 - 9:00. There is no trustworthy exit polling done in a year like this, so don't panic. I'd say the telling neighborhoods will be Bond Hill, the better precincts in Avondale - look at turnout in 'hoods. Westwood and Hyde Park will be telling.

November 3, 200915 yr http://thephonyconey.blogspot.com/2009/11/provost-witnesses-election-fraud.html "...for the second time at the same polling place. Last year, The Provost's ballot was taken by a poll worker, examined, and possibly discarded. The Provost never saw his ballot inserted into the reader and was non-verbally intimidated into leaving the premises. The new ballot-reading machine could not have been simpler, but nevertheless ballots were taken from the hands of voters, quite obviously looked at by a poll worker (unlike old-fashioned punch cards the design of the new ballots makes voter decisions visible from across the room), and then inserted (or not) into the machine by the poll worker. This year, someone -- either a voter or a poll worker -- taped a flyer advertising four school board candidates to the "desk" part of the booths so that it was visible directly above ballots. Poll workers are trained to patrol booths in order to prevent people from doing this, but given the crinkly character of this particular flyer, it appeared to have been taped to the booth for several hours. Of course, if the flyers were posted by poll workers, it is a serious crime. " Lets hope COAST or the NAACP are not up to this

Isn't Avondale and North Avondale Smitherman Territory? actually........a lot of North Avondale residents felt hoodwinked by Smitherman after he joined council. What we thought was an intelligent progressive candidate turned into a divisive attention-seeking firebrand. Avondale proper is also not as straight-Smitherman as you might expect (Smitherman, by the way, lives in North A). I'm working the polls at North Av rec center tonight. Hopefully will see some neighbors.
November 3, 200915 yr Report Voting Errors to the Enquirer "There were no "I voted" stickers. I was mad." Thank God for the Enquirer!
November 3, 200915 yr I frequently read the site but rarely post. Just wanted to wish everyone in Cincy good luck from an observer in Cleveland!
November 3, 200915 yr Does anyone have a list of council candidates that are pro-actively for the streetcar? I've seen a list go around but when I looked at the webpages for those people, a lot didn't list that they were for the streetcar so I have a hard time believing it. Some I know for sure are such as Bortz, Tony Fisher, Laure Quinlivan, but others I'm not quite so sure about. Here's the list of candidates who oppose Issue 9 and who support the Cincinnati Streetcar. for Mayor of Cincinnati: Mark Mallory for Cincinnati City Council: Jeff Berding Chris Bortz Tony Fischer Kevin Flynn Greg Harris Nicholas Hollan Roxanne Qualls Laure Quinlivan Cecil Thomas Bernadette Watson Wendell Young And remember, Issue 9 might apply to roads, bridges, any and every acquisition of land for transportation purposes ... "A court might determine that the "last antecedent rule" applies to the amendment. If so, every acquisition of land - for widening a street, building a bridge - would be subject to a popular vote! At the very least, there would be expensive and time-consuming lawsuits. Not to mention making us a laughingstock." -- Retired Ohio First District Court of Appeals Judge Mark Painter Read Judge Painter's Op-Ed here: http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20091030/EDIT02/910300367/1019/EDIT/Issue+9+could+cause+create+legal+mess MAKE IT VIRAL!

They should have been on that list, bipartisan support helps the case for the streetcar, it doesn't hurt it. Leslie Ghiz is also against Issue 9 on the grounds that it's bad government. She's also pro-streetcar, just doesn't think the timing is appropriate. Pro-streetcar Republicans on council would be an extremely important asset.
November 3, 200915 yr George Zamary and Amy Murray are anti-9 and pro-streetcar Republicans. I'm pretty sure this is not a true statement. Leslie Ghiz is also against Issue 9 on the grounds that it's bad government. She's also pro-streetcar, just doesn't think the timing is appropriate. I call this political waffling. She's trying to score votes with her conservative base, while not offending those in the middle that have made her successful in City Council elections.
November 3, 200915 yr This just happened to me on an elevator: OLD MAN Long day Huh? ME Yes. I still have to vote. OLD MAN Do me a favor. Vote against that stupid streetcar. ME I wasn't aware there was an issue that was solely against the streetcar and the streetcar only OLD MAN Yes. That's the issue 9 thing. ME Oh right. The anti-passenger rail issue? I am definitely voting no on that issue. OLD MAN Good for you. Needless to say I was perplexed, shocked, and dumbfounded. This will be an interesting next few hours waiting for the results. This is why people voting on everything is disastrous
November 3, 200915 yr Wow. It would be ironic if Issue 9 is defeated by people who think they're voting against the streetcar. Sad part is, the ballot language is so badly-worded that, regardless of the outcome, it will be impossible to know the true intentions of the voters.
November 3, 200915 yr George Zamary and Amy Murray are anti-9 and pro-streetcar Republicans. I'm pretty sure this is not a true statement. I heard it come out of their mouths. Zamary lives downtown and his streetcar support statement is right on his website under "Passion for Cincinnati": http://www.georgezamary.com/vision.html Leslie Ghiz is also against Issue 9 on the grounds that it's bad government. She's also pro-streetcar, just doesn't think the timing is appropriate. I call this political waffling. She's trying to score votes with her conservative base, while not offending those in the middle that have made her successful in City Council elections. Remember, she was completely pro-streetcar before the budget situation started to come out. If there's any waffling, it's that she came out against it in order to appease the base. I'm still intrigued that the extreme base of either side are the ones against the streetcar, and the middle and moderates on both sides are for it. It's a strange mix...
November 3, 200915 yr I'm still intrigued that the extreme base of either side are the ones against the streetcar, and the middle and moderates on both sides are for it. It's a strange mix. I've noticed that as well. Part of the reason may be that, at its core, the streetcar is a very pragmatic, common-sense way to improve transportation options and spur development. To be an extremist is to put ideology over pragmatism or common sense.
November 3, 200915 yr So when can we expect the results to come out? The majority should be in except for the absentee and provisionals by tonight right?
November 3, 200915 yr Presumably within a couple hours after the polls close, unless it's so close that it turns into a Florida-style clusterfuck.
November 3, 200915 yr Author Polls are Open until 7:30pm, Be Sure to Vote NO on 9. You Still have Time. http://cincystreetcar.wordpress.com/2009/11/03/polls-are-open-until-730pm-be-sure-to-vote-no-on-9-you-still-have-time/
November 3, 200915 yr I have a bad feeling about tonight. I hope I am wrong, though. Just gotta be positive. I know its physically nauseating to think that COAST and Smitherman could control the future of this city, but we just gotta keep spreading the good word.
November 4, 200915 yr So when can we expect the results to come out? The majority should be in except for the absentee and provisionals by tonight right? The absentee ballot votes should appear on the board of elections website shortly after polls close. When I was a staff writer for a newspaper, we used these numbers to get early reactions from candidates and supporters/opponents of the various issues. The absentee votes aren't necessarily good predictors, but for the impatient who need a fix or an early indication, they certainly can provide a little bit of each! November 4, 200915 yr Still feeling confident about what will happen tonight...hoping it's a victory party for the "no" side. Not a sit around, drink and whine party.

November 4, 200915 yr Im in night class and i find myself refreshing cincinnati.com about every 5 seconds and hoping my laptop battery doesn't die before 9. We're in the final hours now guys lets hope our words got out and we made this happen!!
November 4, 200915 yr Cold night out there. Set-up shop at Crossroads Church. Flynn, Monzel, Zamary all stopped by. Only Zamary was favorable of my sign and stopped to chat. Sue Bortz was great to talk to. One COASTer was there with 2 pro-8 signs. She didn't like the No on 9 so close to her. ;-) Only about 50 voters from 5pm on. Few wanted my flier... November 4, 200915 yr Before anybody freaks out when the first returns are posted: I'm guessing the results on this thing will vary widely depending on which precincts are reporting their returns first. The numbers will probably be all over the map until a solid majority of precincts have reported.

Quite true..the majority of "no on 9" signs that I've seen have been along the proposed streetcar route
November 4, 200915 yr I just got back from working outside Knox church in Hyde Park. I have to say I am not that confident. A lot of voters were confused and didn't know what they were voting on. Most thought they were voting against the streetcar. Exactly what the writers of the amendment wanted. All council candidates and those supporting issues outside the church were against issue nine. All mentioned to me how terrible an amendment nine was except for Monzel and former councilman Cranley.
November 4, 200915 yr And here they come... "No on 9" up 51.7% by 48.3% Curiously, the same results also show Wenstrup and Mallory almost tied. Without reading too much into it, that could be a good sign for us if the same people who are inclined to vote for Wenstrup are also voting no on Issue 9.
