That's the $64 question. Qualls is an enormously popular Councilperson; judging by the past several elections perhaps the most popular. Cranley has been out of the public eye for some time now too boot. Plus Cranley has a blind spot as big as a barn; he can be easily attacked on his multiple conflicts of interest as a developer that should preclude him from office. In fact you can use the very attacks that COAST used against Bortz for the same reasons and just cross out Bortz and fill in Cranley's name instead.

With his pandering to the typical suburban resident, as well as the above mentioned conflicts of interest, I wonder if Cranley isn't planning on running for a larger office, perhaps the County Commission, etc?

Never fear!!

Barry Horstman to the rescue!!!

I don't know if somebody got nasty or what, but the Enquirer has already erased all of the comments that were posted on that article already.

It was just COAST and a few other of their screen names yelling 'boondoggle'.

The media in this town is so predictable.  Faux outrage and then the Enquirer creating a false equivalency through a Horstman article designed to get hits.  After these two steps, let AM radio take over

This is how its going to play out.

-As usual Fox19, WKRC, WCPO, and WLWT will be late to the game and write a shabby article giving way too much weight to Cranley/Smitherman/Winburn/COAST

-Dusty Rhodes will write an unfunny tweet

-Tom Luken will write a LTE thursday or friday

-Cranley will write an opinion piece, probably the same one word for word that Thomas used on his blog and give it to the enquirer

-Smitherman, Cranley and/or Finney will be on 55KRC the rest of the week. Then they will be on Bill Cunningham and/or Scott Sloan thursday and friday.  Saturday morning 1 of the two will be on Darryl Parks and/or That Lisa Wells show

-Barry Horstman will write a article Monday suggesting something shady and possibly illegal is going on to outrage the suburbanites

Barry Horstman and his Magical Hair Helmet® have changed the title of the article to something eminently more troll worthy:

$29M may get streetcar going

It is fascinating how this small group of men run this little sideshow. Tragic that so many people call Cincinnati's elected council the "circus."

In the article by Barry, Cranley is quoted as saying,

"When it comes to economic projections, they have zero credibility, because they’re been way off all along,”

I would like to know Cranley's new methods he developed for evaluating economic returns. Apparently he has created a new way of forecasting future revenue and I would like to hear it.

Never fear!!

This is what I heard at the end I sh*t you not

"What if my friend is on the streetcar. If the windows weren't tinted I may see him and decide to take a ride with him"

yes, tinted windows & mass transit will be the ruination of the whole social order.

Tinted windows? They're really scraping the bottom of the barrel for their anti-streetcar arguments these days.

I don't know, I thought the whole "Vine Street is SO steep that streetcar riders will fall out of their seats" argument was pretty  close to rock bottom.

no, this is very common with the buses. Upon reaching Uptown, the bus driver will stop & peel people off the back of the bus & put them back in their seats before proceeding north. The buses really need a "some settling of contents" warnings on them.

I suggest Jason Haap's calling the streetcar a "coal-burning train" was the clear winner on the stupidity scale, barely edging out Justin Jeffre's grease-powered streetcar proposal. Both were in a class by themselves -- not just for orginality but also for persistence.

We should make a collage of all the dumb arguments we've heard over the last 6 years.  I wonder if people following these individuals like Smitherman and COAST would be astounded by some of the stupidity of the arguments they've made.

Is anyone coming to council Monday? I've been told to expect 40-50 anti streetcar people to speak.

Don't forget the "somebody might put a banana peel on the rails" argument, and the "streetcars can only go in a straight line" argument, both posited by the Cincinnati Beacon brain trust.

Is anyone coming to council Monday? I've been told to expect 40-50 anti streetcar people to speak.

Smitherman, Winburn, 55krc, COAST, 700wlw, and Fox19 have been telling people to go to this meeting.  Its going to be an absolute circus filled with hyperbole to the max.

City council has got to stay strong against the loud minority of naysayers/city haters

It would be a good idea for streetcar supporters to attend and testify at Council Finance tomorrow.

Get a yellow Speaker's Card on the right side of the Chamber and fill it out.

Keep your remarks to two minutes.

What time?

10:30AM.  Get there early to get a speakers card.

This is the Helmut 'O Hair's latest trope:

"The meeting also will see the unveiling of an alternative transit proposal from a group with the long-shot hope of persuading council to postpone further streetcar action until it reviews the organization’s plan to establish a wireless, trackless trolley system. From the start, top city leaders have rejected the idea of a rubber-wheeled trolley-bus plan, arguing that the absence of streetcar tracks – which convey a sense of long-term city commitment and permanence – would seriously undercut potential economic development along the route.

But Gregg Fusaro of Capital Investment Group, Downtown, said the fact that the group’s plan would cost only about $11 million to cover a much broader route than the streetcar’s initial line merits serious consideration. “Something that would cost less than a tenth as much as the streetcar is an idea I hope the council would want to at least look at closely,” Fusaro said. “It’s late, but not too late.”

I'm told "expect chaos".  Opponents know they can't do anything to stop the project right now so smitherman, winburn, talk radio and COAST have decided to get as many suburbanites/outraged people there to throw a last ditch Hail Mary. Most importantly for Sillyman and COAST, they think it will help  their public image in the media

^Good point, they particularly want attention right now because they're against Issue 4. Toast, Sillyman, and all of the regressives that were kicked off of Council adamantly oppose extending terms, so any additional publicity just helps them pipe up against that issue.

Smitherman is suggesting that there is a streetcar fee coming from duke and said people in blue ash will pay for this.

On 700wlw right now. Said it will bankrupt the city

Said it cannot be successful because its too short. Said there is a trasmitter under vine street that will be expensive

Sillyman said he will vote to stop the streetcar in its tracks even if construction begins. "I haven't conceded that the streetcar will be built"

Supports cranley

Said dukes gas lines could literally blow up the city

Meeting just started.  I'll post some live updates.  Dohoney speaking now

I like Dohoney, but I tend to fall asleep everytime he talks.

Here come the speakers

First two speakers against.  Both speakers talked about how this only benefits 2 neighborhoods as opposed to 52

Crowd seems to be even.  The talking points from the opposition seem exactly the same(written).  "It doesn't benefit all the neighborhoods, Mallory wont listen, Mallory broke his promise", etc

Former VP of Cincinnati Bell shows his support for the project.

-Talks about the turnaround in downtown and OTR.

Former City Council candidate calls the mayor and council a gang.  "This streetcar will not benefit the neighborhoods"

"Winburn and smitherman have been truthful and outspoken.  How is the streetcar going to benefit me in Kennedy Heights.  We have a responsibility to get you out of office"

Taste of Belgium owner

Talks about locating his store on the line

"Permanence of the track"

"Technicalities should not change the outcome of the streetcar.  Cincy has voted twice"

Older Woman from westwood

'Streetcar a bad issue from the beginning'

"Mayor promised it will be used for all the neighborhoods"

We need a trolley system

Mt Lookout citizen

I have to leave for a about 10. I'll be back

Amy Murray

'So concerned about finances....Its a moving target...I'm really concerned about sitting idle'

Rev Doc Foster

Opposition well organized.

Hyde park woman

'You are pushing us to the point of moving out'

Another Hyde Park woman

'This is immoral.  This would never pass if true cost was on the ballot.  You don't have the money'

Woman from westwood

'This is mindboggling...Our neighborhoods are suffering...People are moving out of the city...Scavengers coming in...No emphasis on the help of our neighborhoods...Businesses are not going to be shaking down...We have 52 neighborhoods that need more attention'

Hyde Park woman

'Support our neighborhoods. We don't need a streetcar.  I don't get it.  The financing issue is a concern...Why why?"

Guy

"This is the USA.  We expect you to do what we vote for....This streetcar is going to give me a job...For those in hyde park who complain about it, I know someone who is going to move downtown along the route..We need to make this city...We behind every city from St Louis to Charlotte...Lets grow up and do something about it...The majority speaks louder than the few minority that speak here"

Tom Luken

"They don't have any attendance in tampa or charlotte.  They are invisible....We are talking about keeping promises...This council, this city council has betrayed the city of Cincinnati...Sorta is not using the money for streets...We spend $50 mil/year on sorta....Thats the vapor being wrapped around this streetcar which will, according to the mayor, cost $50mil for utility relocation alone..."

Hyde Park man

'Do not allocate the funds....Irresponsibility since the city faces a fiscal crisis...Council is avoiding the responsible choice...Unfunded pension costs...no neighborhood improvements...My children and grandchildren will suffer the consequences for the actions today...Vote down the use of the airport funds"

Woman

"Council will not listen...I truly oppose everything about this project"

Woman from College Hill

Woman

"Long time resident. I'm astounded the anti streetcar people are trying to obstruct our most advancement of some time.  Voters have approved this twice.  Anti-progress try to push their regressive ideas on the rest of us...I've seen a conservative town evolve into a growth city that encourages progress...Streetcar will extend into other neighborhoods eventually...Many restaurants want permanent rails...I urge council to support the streetcar system"

Woman from downtown

"I am impressed and dismayed by the detractors that have delayed the project...This city was a beacon of progress and forward thinking...We chose to move downtown because of this...Citizens twice voted for this project...Please continue your support"

Man from college hill(for 49 years)

"It took us 25 years to get our roads paved here...27 years to get a rec center....Now you want to borrow money...Its the RAPE of the neighborhoods..."

Woman

"I'm a Sibcy Cline Realtor...We need to use trolley's not streetcars"

Man from Mt Lookout

John Cranley

Brings out a JFK quote.  "170 million streetcar" goes into detail about TIFS..."No money for the next phase of the Riverfront Park...Stop denying your taking money from Banks and Riverfront Park...Downtown TIF fund is city's last resort to attract jobs downtown...Taxing the middle class for a streetcar and young professionals then the trickle down theory...The problem with the trickle down theory is, as Bill Clinton said, Arithmatic'

Hyde Park Man

"About promises...Two have been broken...Money was promised to the federal gov that it would be used for airports..You promised the money would go to neighborhoods...You broke that too...You will break the duke energy promise....You have no credibility...You will bankrupt the city with the streetcar'

Woman East Price Hill

'I am for the neighborhoods..."

Unfortunately I have to get to work...Sorry guys...

My feeling is that if council backs out of building the streetcar now just because a bunch of crazy, suburban republicans showed up to this meeting, then they are complete morons.  After all the crazy stuff we've been through up to this point, nothing should sway them from finishing the project.

My only worry is that we'll have some of the new, young, inexperienced council members make a stupid mistake and decide to listen to the crazy opponents.  If they do that and this project gets stalled or cancelled, I'm out of here.  I'll put both my properties up for sale and I'll move out of this city for good.  That's how strongly I feel about this streetcar.  It's one of the only reasons I moved back to Cincinnati 5 years ago and its the only reason I'm still here.  To me it represents a city that's serious about making its core strong.  That's the kind of city I want to live in and thats the kind of city that younger generations will continue to seek out.

One of the reasons I moved from Ohio last Fall was the cancellation of the Cleveland-Columbus-Dayton-Cincinnati 3C project by Gov. Kasich and supporting trogolodytes. I hope it doesn't come to that for you.

Did anyone see the old man, from NCH who could barely walk, come up to the podium and declare that we need to use the money to build a jail? It was absolutely priceless.

Yes.  I particularly liked the old woman talking about the streetcar stopping in the middle of the road between traffic and people in wheelchairs falling because of the tracks

North College Hill? That's it's own city. Why don't the suburbs build a jail then??????

Quinlivan, Simpson, Seelbach, Thomas, Young, Qualls YES

PG, Smitherman, Winburn NO

What were they actually voting on?  I read it somewhere but now I can't find it through all of the noise.

>Why don't the suburbs build a jail then???

In Ohio counties build and staff jails, not cities.  It's state law.

its the finance committee.  Full council votes should be along those same lines barring a Smitherman antic

Which obviously is an even better argument for why the city's "streetcar money" can't be used to build a new jail.
