October 21, 201311 yr Good god ... I can't take anymore. The haters' endless hate long since jumped the shark for me. It's just white noise now.
October 21, 201311 yr Looks like they've been holding on to some "scandal" until the last moment. Given the big swing and miss Osborne took at Randy Simes, I don't think there's much to be worried about.
October 21, 201311 yr ^That's what I was thinking. Some of the things CO calls scandals are just nothing at all. Hope Osborne is happy in the big leagues.
October 21, 201311 yr In my opinion If there was something scandalous, coast and smitherman and 700wlw and the Enquirer would have come up with it by now. Who knows though They've been announcing major scandals for the last 4 years Mary Kuhl has been talking about this for weeks, as I'm sure all the opponents have, and probably gave it to Osborne on a silver player
October 21, 201311 yr If they try to cancel the streetcar we should protest immediately. The people have spoken twice
October 21, 201311 yr >Hope Osborne is happy in the big leagues. Yeah he spent years harassing the streetcar project in the pages of CityBeat because Chris Bortz was its initial proponent. I remember well a column where he picked apart how Bortz claimed to be an innocuous Charterite but was in fact a Republican. Then on the day in 2011 when Kasich took away the uptown funding, Bortz could be heard immediately after the TRAC meeting on the airwaves of 700 WLW poo-pooing the streetcar, saying "it wasn't the right time". Last week, Tom Luken appeared on 700WLW saying Bortz was kicked off council for an ethics violation related to the streetcar. So he purposefully confused the details of Cranley's exit with Bortz's.
October 21, 201311 yr The town is insane. Especially the media. Focusing only on the street car, but has a HUGE 4 billion sewer system that was ORDERED to be upgraded and a 2 billion dollar bridge.
October 22, 201311 yr Here it is. Qualls is selling real estate along the streetcar route... http://www.wcpo.com/news/political/local-politics/cincinnati-mayoral-race-attacks-between-qualls-cranley-get-more-heated Don't see the big deal. It's not illegal or violate ethics laws

Qualls is selling real estate along the streetcar route... http://www.wcpo.com/news/political/local-politics/cincinnati-mayoral-race-attacks-between-qualls-cranley-get-more-heated Don't see the big deal. It's not illegal or violate ethics laws ANYTHING that raises doubt or even the appearance of misconduct... true or not.
October 22, 201311 yr “A property along that route that would’ve sold for $15,000 now can sell for $100,000,” added Kiefer, who owns a furniture restoration business in West Price Hill. “She will end up making more profit from the sale.” hold the bus! Is a streetcar opponent really insisting that the streetcar can improve property value that much? Oh the irony.
October 22, 201311 yr Isn't she a realtor? So does that mean she couldn't list or sell ANY property in the city because, no matter what; no matter where, a property is going to be affected by a decision she's made or a project she's supported SOMEWHERE. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
October 22, 201311 yr Exactly. So let me get this straight. One week we have streetcar opponents telling us that there is no development that can be attributed to the streetcar. Or that any development that is happening would have happened anyway. Now we are told that Qualls is benefitting from development on the streetcar route in her role as a hired agent. Which is it?
October 22, 201311 yr this seems like a coordinated attack by the GOP and tea party. Mary Kuhl knew about this on October 15th before the debate at 7:58 according to her Facebook wall. I believe this was held and given to Kevin Osborne by the GOP/Tea Party https://www.facebook.com/mary.kuhl.184?fref=ts <div id="fb-root"></div> <script>(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));</script> <div class="fb-post" data-href="https://www.facebook.com/mary.kuhl.184/posts/10201356888582890" data-width="550"><div class="fb-xfbml-parse-ignore"><a href="https://www.facebook.com/mary.kuhl.184/posts/10201356888582890">Post</a> by <a href="https://www.facebook.com/mary.kuhl.184">Mary Kuhl</a>.</div></div> "Can't wait til this debate is over!! It's not illegal or violate ethics laws I think it's a non-issue, of course the usual hysterical suspects will, but what the heck, they're pretty much preaching to the choir. If the Board of Realtors has an issue with it, that's a different thing - but that's a private organization with their own code of ethics.

October 22, 201311 yr Cranley presser at 11 to exploit er discuss his new otr investment project instead of streetcar
October 22, 201311 yr Qualls has called a 1pm press conference. Osborne will be busy covering that instead of appearing on Cunningham's show. They held this "controversy" until after the government shutdown, but it's been buried a bit today by the new Reds manager announcement and the sponge bob controversy.

October 22, 201311 yr This is quickly becoming a non-story, at this point almost disappearing from the WCPO web site. Gots to do better than this, John.

October 22, 201311 yr Cranley must be taking notes from the Tea Party/House Democrats on how to do things that come back on you 100-fold the wrong way!
October 22, 201311 yr Sorry, I meant House Republicans obviously! The modify button isn't working FYI mods!
October 23, 201311 yr A link to the Cunningham/Osbourne interview: http://www.700wlw.com/media/podcast-bill-cunningham-bill_cunningham/foxy-roxie-102213-hour-3-23872934/ So Chris Bortz was forced to recuse himself from streetcar votes circa 2010, but not Cranley, even though his rich dad owns a 9-story building on the route? As mayor, wouldn't there be a conflict of interest if Cranley takes any action whatsoever relating to the streetcar project? Or for that matter anything whatsoever regarding downtown? New street lights? New sidewalks?
October 23, 201311 yr A link to the Cunningham/Osbourne interview: http://www.700wlw.com/media/podcast-bill-cunningham-bill_cunningham/foxy-roxie-102213-hour-3-23872934/ OK, the last part where Cunning Ham starts talking about journalistic integrity is almost surreal.
October 23, 201311 yr Feels good to join the rail club, doesn't it? You're now the second city in Ohio with rail. And the third one will be....... "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
October 23, 201311 yr Jibreel K Riley introduced me to a term I hadn't heard before: "Highway Fascism." The more I think about that term, the more I think it fits the situation perfectly. After all, it was Mussolini who said that fascism is the merger of corporate and political power. This is exactly what we have in Ohio and elsewhere. Highway contractors monopolize state transportation policy through a revolving door at ODOT and by buying off the legislature. Thus we have the former head of the Ohio Asphalt Paving Association running the former and legislators receiving campaign contributions via events sponsored by roadbuilders. It's "pay-to-play" in Ohio and ANY alternative to roads is an anathema to highway interests. The Cincinnati Streetcar and intercity passenger rail proposals are viewed like ants at their picnic. Thus, we have a merger of corporate and government power to make sure we have NO choice but to drive and keep on supporting their fascist system. "Fascist" is a strong term, but that's exactly what we have here.
October 23, 201311 yr Feels good to join the rail club, doesn't it? You're now the second city in Ohio with rail. And the third one will be....... Once the Cincinnati streetcar opens, I give it 5 years before either Columbus, Indianapolis, Lexington, or Louisville break ground on a modern streetcar system. When officials and citizens from those cities can visit Cincinnati and see a modern streetcar first-hand, that will make all the difference.

And that's what some defenders of the status quo fear most. Agreed. Before streetcars were always 'somewhere else" and not relevant. Now they are in the backyard of the Highway Fascists and that's why we are seeing such a negative reaction by state government, suburban legislators and their Tea Party supporters. Columbus, Dayton and Indianapolis are next and they know it.
October 23, 201311 yr Is there any doubt that this WCPO article was a coordinated attack between COAST and John Cranley? Mary Kuhl knew about this October 15. October 23, 201311 yr How much rail is going to be installed tomorrow? Is another shipment arriving? I read that Elm would be closed tomorrow from 10 am to 2 pm. When will concrete be poured on the initial segments? I took some pictures a few days ago and noticed that rail seemed to be really low in the trench. Will the concrete expand and push it upward? I suppose the cleaned cobblestones will then be reinstalled.

October 24, 201311 yr Cranley's very awkward response to someone questioning his association with the tea party:
October 24, 201311 yr Does anyone know if Kansas City is having as much push back as Cincinnati is about their streetcar? I read a couple articles in Kansas City Star and they didn't seem nearly as negative/skeptical as media outlets here. What is the public perception like there? As divided?
October 24, 201311 yr Kansas City has had a much longer and more hard-faught effort to get rail built than Cincinnati. Going back well before MetroMoves here (2002), Kansas City had something like seven different rail initiatives over maybe fifteen or twenty years, most of them led by a sponsor who didn't live there. One of them, which directed the city to build a light rail line, actually passed. The city said it didn't have the money, nor could it get Federal money, so thank you and bye. So with its streetcar, KC is following the same route as Cincinnati is ... get something on the ground and show people the path to light rail. By the way, with a 154-person capacity, can we quit callng the CAF vehicles "streetcars" and start calling them what CAF calls them on its web site? And that's "light rail." Anyway, under Missouri law small transportation improvement districts may be formed to make improvements, and so such a district was formed in and near downtown to pay for the capital and operating funds of the KC Streetcar. That's been done, court-tested through at least the appeals level, and KC will start building soon. Not sure it has all the money, but there is no doubt this project is a go. KC is using four of Cincinnati's remaining options on future cars made by CAF. KC is planning its next line.
October 24, 201311 yr Has kc had any of the rhetoric cincy has had? 'streetcar is worse than 9/11', 'streetcar is communist', 'young African American males will not be able to ride the streetcar', 'they are firing cops and ff to pay for a trolly', etc? Any referendums?
October 24, 201311 yr By the way, with a 154-person capacity, can we quit callng the CAF vehicles "streetcars" and start calling them what CAF calls them on its web site? And that's "light rail." That's interesting... if Cincinnati moves forward with light rail next, is there any reason we could not use the exact same CAF vehicles to travel between, say, downtown and Sharonville?

That's interesting... if Cincinnati moves forward with light rail next, is there any reason we could not use the exact same CAF vehicles to travel between, say, downtown and Sharonville? You would want to gear them differently (higher top speed, less hill climbing ability) and you'd probably want to use the five section or seven section cars, but it would make sense to build a future light rail fleet around a CAF car. It would help with spare parts, maintenance, training, etc.

Not sure how that would translate over into longer cars, but you'd have another rail yard when we build a light rail system. You'd probably want to do it further out the line where land is cheaper.
