Right now I live in Tremont with a roommate, but am looking at possibly relocating to Lakewood to live alone. Where are the "good" areas to live? I don't know much about Lakewood, but it seems like a nice community for a young single professional. Any help would be great!

As an FYI, in Tremont, I live right by the park in a house, gated parking, laundry, etc.

kimberrr, you might want to check some past lakewood recs and also list the "must have" amenities you want to live with.  KJP and 327 are sure to chime in with information as they are current Lakewood residents.

I also suggest going out during the day and just looking at houses as well as weekend nights.

Must haves:

Laundry facilities of some sort, storage, and off-street parking

Everything else is negotiable... central air would be nice though.

Rent $600 or less for a 1 bedroom

All of it is good, and $600 1-brs are everywhere.  Check along Madison, Detroit, Lake & Clifton.  Along those main drags it gets nicer as you go west.  You might find something on the sidestreets but those are more for houses and doubles with 2-3brs.  Craigslist is helpful.  On foot is the best way to look because many places, especially the ones with the best deals, don't advertise.

The west end along Detroit is best if you like the bar scene (college-type).  So is the east end along Madison (smaller and more blue collar).  The east end along Detroit is best if you like live music.  The downtown area in the middle along Detroit has considerable shopping.  The gold coast area in the NE corner is quieter and has probably the best apartment selection.  The western stretch of Madison is also quieter.  Transit availability is better in the northern and eastern parts of Lakewood.

They just built it.  The first floor tenants are military recruiters.  It's located between downtown and the west end.  I'm surprised it's so low.  I might look into that myself.

How is that part of town? It looks to be more west...

I will most likely go and check it out... but $450 seems like a "too good to be true" type of deal, especially when you add in free heat.

The exact location of Rosewood is a little slow.  It's mostly car dealerships around there.  The nightlife is a few blocks west and the shopping is a few blocks east.  None of this is a big deal distance-wise.  Everything is still very close, and sometimes you don't necessarily want to live right by the bars.

Exactly, that's why it seems so fantastic... but I am wary of the super low rent. Thoughts? Thanks so much for your help!  :-D

That's low-range but not super low for Lakewood.  Not at all.  This is why I like Lakewood so much.  The only thing odd that it's a new building and I figured they would be hi-range.  Check it out and let us know how it looks inside!

I live in the downtown area, not far from Rosewood, and it's great.  If I had to choose again I might go a little more east, to be near the concert places, but that's just me.  All of Lakewood presents a good example of how the city used to function and what it would look like if fixed up.

I think that's a terrific location and very good rent!!! It's five blocks from Marc's, three blocks from the Detroit Theater, six blocks from the Y, three blocks from the newly expanded Lakewood library, three blocks from Discount Drug Mart and an easy walk to lots of restaurants and taverns. The 26 bus on Detroit runs 24 hours a day to downtown, and it and the Circulator (also runs on Detroit) connect with the Rapid to downtown, airport, east side, etc.

Try this and use the Streetview feature:

I live on Clifton near the Gold Coast yet don't have all the amenities of this location, but it's probably a little quieter here. I can walk to lots of shops and restaurants along West 117th, but not all apartment buildings around here have off-street parking (or at least sufficient off-street parking). Rosewood will probably be noisier and it will get more sirens being near the hospital, but I get my fair share. Plus I also get the trains. Be sure to check out duplex/triplex/quadplex house rentals as they can offer some good deals. See if you can get the second floor, or if you are on the first floor, make sure a family with children or a partying young adult doesn't live above you! Also, ask around about the neighbors -- a loud, obnoxious and nuisance neighbor can ruin an otherwise great neighborhood.

I don't think all the units are new... the building above military recruiters is new.  But rosewood also includes the building and shops to the east (old).  The pictures on the website look like an older place (not bad at all mind you, but definitely not new)... those may be the units that start at $450.

wowza. the $450  "lofts" left something to be desired. definitely need renovating BIG TIME, and the apt. was tiny. still hunting!

Sorry to hear this turned out to be a bust. I hope you'll keep looking in Lakewood. Try some of the Gold Coast high rises, the high-rises in the West End overlooking the Metroparks' Rocky River Reservation, or maybe duplexes/triplexes/quadplexes at least 10 houses from the railroad tracks and that are near the five main nodes of activity -- Gold Coast (side streets like Coutant near West 117th can be sketchy), downtown (and just west of it along Detroit), Madison Village (along Madison between Bunts and Warren), West End (Detroit near the valley) and, if you can find a duplex in good condition in Birdtown (south of Madison, east of Madison Park), then go for it.

You'll have that.  Finding apartments is tough.  I'm not familiar with Detroit Manor, but I like the area around it.

What about Detroit Manor? 1388 W 111th St

Borderline neighborhood. It's OK during the day. One of my co-workers lived in that neighborhood (she lived above My Friends restaurant on Detroit near West 117th) and regularly encountered panhandlers and sometimes witnessed a few drug deals on Detroit Avenue. They were more of a nuisance though. She loved living next to Brothers Lounge, Arabica Coffee (but I think Arabica has closed), and Walgreen's. Detroit Manor is a little bit farther away, though.

The best areas in Cleveland's Edgewater neighborhood are north of the tracks. Can you find anything on Clifton or Lake?

I've lived in that area and KJP's description is accurate. It's not terrible but there were on occasion problems. I would recommend looking elsewhere.

Hi All-

I signed a lease in Lakewood! By Madison and Bunts. It's a pretty nice place, I love it. :)

Because of the stipulations of my old lease, unless I find someone, I will have to still pay June rent. I have posted ads on craigslist, cle backpages and pluggedincleveland. Anywhere else you can think of I can post?

Thanks!

Congrats - I have friends living in a duplex on Bunts between Madison & Athena and they enjoy it...been there ~2 years now.  $250/month/person doesn't hurt either :)

Welcome to Lakewood, neighbor! Did you go with an apartment in a multi-unit building or a rental unit in a house/duplex?

Congrats on finding a place.  Not sure what age range you are looking for in a roommate but you can always try the college bulletin boards, some of them I believe have online BBs.
