It is fitting, given Dubai's lightning-fast development pace and the lack of restrictions placed on architects working in the city, that once we finally report on progress on our own World Trade Center, kaboom, here comes Dubai's....

A Sports Mecca (Pardon the Expression)

By ED ZUCKERMAN

Published: March 2, 2008

.......

When I met Amri, a stocky man in a white dishdasha and gutra, he was in his sporting position — the shotgun seat of a white Toyota Land Cruiser on the track at what a sign called New Camel Racing City. There are actually three parallel tracks at New Camel Racing City, a spanking-new facility on the outskirts of town. There's one for the racing camels and one on each side for the owners' cars. Amri's camel was in the race that was about to begin, and Amri was ready to ride it with her.

Camel racing, like falconry, is an actual local sport and one much favored by the Emirati elite. The late Sheik Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan, the former president of the U.A.E. and namesake of Dubai's skyscraper-laden highway, maintained a large stable of racing camels, and Dubai's current ruler, Sheik Mohammad, has been reported to own thousands....

Well isn't that the fun part about Dubai, just to check out what cracked-out proposal they can come up with (and build) next? If I wanted boring, I'd go check Rossetti's portfolio.

With the breakneck pace of luxury development in our favorite Emirate, it would be wise for Dubai to focus on building something like affordable housing—you know, so the help has a place to stay. But this is the desert, and in the desert there are no rules. That's why developer Emaar has announced that in August, the Dubai Mall—one of the biggest shopping centers in the world—will throw open its doors with 3.77 million square feet of leasable space, the size of 50 football fields....

Plight of migrant workers blemishes Dubai's image

By HAMZA HENDAWI, Associated Press Writer Sun May 25, 1:50 PM ET

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - The 22 men in "trailer 10" work the morning shift at a construction site, then take turns shopping, cooking and cleaning. They pray together. When one returns to India on leave, he carries family presents and cash for the others.

"We all come from the Punjab" in northern India, said Pavinder Singh, a 42-year-old carpenter from the trailer in a camp that houses about 3,000 workers on the desert outskirts of Dubai. "But what makes us like a family is what we have to endure here together."

I'd LOVE to see the boilerplate contract.

Every rendering of a Dubai project I see ignores the overwhelming amounts of sand EVERYWHERE over there (aside from the pockets of artificial color of course).  The place is a lot tanner than one would think if you went by what you see on tv/online.

Rotating Wind Power Tower to begin construction in Dubai

by Mahesh Basantani

http://www.inhabitat.com/wp-content/uploads/twirlingtower1.jpg

Dubai has garnered much attention in recent years with a never-ending supply of architectural wonders being built, or proposed, at a head spinning pace. Mostly these towering structures are grand and tall, but some are also green. We’ve covered many an ambitious Dubai skyscraper scheme here at Inhabitat, including David Fisher’s Rotating Tower, but there is new news from Fisher’s Dynamic Architecture firm. This self-sufficient, sun and wind powered design is making headlines once again as the Italian-Israeli architect has just unveiled the latest design for his twirling tower, and construction is set to begin this month!

http://www.inhabitat.com/wp-content/uploads/fisher1.jpg

The Dynamic Architecture building has been aptly named Rotating Tower as the floors would be capable of rotating around a central axis...

http://www.inhabitat.com/wp-content/uploads/fisher4.jpg

The 59-floor building will be powered entirely by sun and wind energy...

Rotating skyscraper plans for Moscow, Dubai -- N.Y.? By Sinead Carew

Tue Jun 24, 5:24 PM ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - After taking in an expansive view of Manhattan from a friend's apartment, architect David Fisher came up with a way to make the most of a good location -- a rotating building.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080624/us_nm/newyork_tower_dc

It is important to note that there are 2 classes of people: The very very rich and the dirt poor. With all of the money the rich make, they share close to none of it with the extremely hard working peasants who are building this city. They are also positioning themselves business wise in a way that may be threatening our national security.

I'm confused.  How is another country getting rich a "threat" to our national security?  Is it because it's in the Arabic peninsula?!?

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

Dubai is a threat to our belief that we have the coolest buildings.

This makes me want to visit Dubai even more...the over the topness of it all is fascinating...the cost of it all (workers rights and the crazy amounts of money) is depressing though.

Oy!  This project gives me "motion sickness".  Either that or I just threw up in my mouth a little.

The Hill - Dubai is threatening retaliation against American strategic and commercial interests if Washington blocks its $6.8 billion takeover of operations at several U.S. ports.

As the House Appropriations Committee yesterday marked up legislation to kill Dubai Ports World’s acquisition of Britain’s Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation (P&O), the emirate let it be known that it is preparing to hit back hard if necessary.

A source close to the deal said members of Dubai’s royal family are furious at the hostility both Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill have shown toward the deal.

Dubai threat to hit back

NY Times is now reporting that Dubai is bowing to pressure and transferring operations of American ports to an American compaany

Flyer Anne March 9, 2006 - 5:12pm

Because I don't think his is the forum for such a deep and indepth discussion, I have just supplied a couple of paragraphs from an article or two to peak everyones interest. Anyone who would like to research "The Dubai Threat" should enter this phrase in Google, to start. Dubai has been slowly fighting for contracts to build US military weapons, there are contraversies with takeover bids for key US Companies on The NY Stock Exchange, etc. They have made many moves and attempted moves that could be considered threatening to US interests and security. Paranoia or Threat? I have my opinion. I'll let you guys develop your own.

A middle eastern country with goo gobs of money, slowly, but surely, making friends with our Air Force and military branches and then, all of a sudden, there are shady deals where American companies who are bidding on military contracts are suddenly out of the picture because they were asked to submit bids for a smaller version of a product? Why weren't US companies notified that Congress had changed their mind and were now interested in the larger product?Dubai was aware of the change. I don't feel that it is in our best interest economically, nor is it in the best interest of national security for The US to be relying on this company to make our weapon systems.

A middle eastern country with goo gobs of money making take over bids for major international shipping ports? They would own, operate and have complete control of major shipping ports on strategic borders of our country. They will have control or how much of what imports and exports come in and out of those ports. There are legal problems if we ever get suspicious, and these ports are near major population areas. Again, I don't think this is in the best interest of our national security.

There are more interesting facts about their activities on Wall Street and elsewhere. It seems that almost everything they attempt to do concerning The US puts us at risk somehow. They don't do much on a small scale and it always involves critical interests of The US. I am not the only one who has noticed this. Many congressmen and Senators have been expressing great concern and so have people across America and around the world. Much of the information is kept quiet and I have noticed some controversy just suddenly disappear. But I still remember. Lou Dobbs use to be on this issue heavily, but I haven't heard much from him lately. Something just doesn't sit right with all of this. The more I pay attention, the more paranoid I get about this country. I'm done talking about it on this forum. I don't want to disappear or something.

You guys should do your own research.

Well, I actually have been to the U.A.E. and Dubai (though it was 12 years ago) so I'm actually pleasantly surprised that it's turned into this modern-day experimental showcase of human engineering.

If I were a resident, buying into such a bold project, I would at least want it designed by someone who has designed a skyscraper before.

  • 2 weeks later...

My brother-in-law was there recently, and he said it looked like subdivions of skyscrapers going up in places.  NBC just did a story tonight - I think they want to invest 270 billion in the next 5 years alone.  It is indeed crazy.

270 billion? That's unreal! Imagine that in Northeast Ohio.

Imagine 1 billion is NE Ohio lol!

Varying tinted glass?!?!?!  That's so 2007

Imagine 1 billion is NE Ohio lol!

You don't have to imagine that!!!

There are definitely billions being spent in NE. Ohio, but It would take a lot of drinks and a big steak for dinner for me to even dream about $200 billion in NE Ohio.

I was trolling through Flickr looking for some cityscapes to use as my desktop image and stumbled across these purrrdy shots.

Sadly, you will have to go directly to each URL to view them.

Eye on Dubai: Spinning Skyscraper Lines Up 140 U.S. Buyers?!

Wednesday, July 16, 2008, by Joey

.....Wait, not only are foreigners keeping our condo market afloat, but now the American buyers who can afford such flights of fancy are taking their money elsewhere? Eh, who knows. Certainly reservations don't necessarily lead to sales (coughTrumpSohocough), and you have to take chest-pounding Dubai real estate news with a grain of salt, and we're still not sure this whole building isn't some elaborate prank, but good lord!

Eye on Dubai: More Spinning Madness

Thursday, July 17, 2008, by Joey

It has come to our attention, via a tipster, that a second group of builders is trying to create a worldwide chain of rotating skyscrapers, with Dubai (of course) being the first target: "I don't know if you've noticed, but there are actually two groups determined to dominate the skylines of the world with their rotating skyscrapers. There's Dynamic Architecture, which you've covered, but there is also the Time Residences. Like Dynamic Architecture they plan to hit all of the hot spots. Unlike Dynamic Architecture, these guys appear to have actually built stuff before." [Time Residences]

This is the worst idea I've ever seen.  What starts off as a decently designed building quickly turns into a tower of Jenga or some childs building blocks stack.  blah!!  Does each residence have control over where the floor spins.  Because you know they will never look like the original building before everyone moves in and starts playing spin.

Boom Times Take Root in Dubai

By LANDON THOMAS Jr.

Published: July 18, 2008

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Bathed in the glow of the skyline’s glitter, the centerpiece of Dubai’s financial hub seems equal to the thrusting ambitions of the foreign investment bankers rushing to set up shop here.

http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2008/07/18/business/worldbusiness/dubailarge.jpg

Revenue From Oil Exports, 2007

This is the new Wall Street — it’s the center of gravity,” said Fares Noujaim, Merrill Lynch’s new president of the company’s business in the Middle East and North Africa, pointing up at the main building of the Dubai International Financial Center that covers the sky above him.

Called the Gate, it seems more a giant slab of modern art than an office building.

The Dubai boom has been riding oil’s ascent for years now. Its ultramodern skyline, which barely existed little more than a decade ago, has become a prominent symbol of the emergence of this once scrubby emirate on the western coast of the Persian Gulf as the Middle East’s principal financial, trade and tourism center...

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/18/business/worldbusiness/18dubai.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1&ref=business

Interesting article.  I'm sure it's by no mistake that the entire city (that has been constructed with oil money) is built around the automobile.

"“This could be America 100 years ago.”

An accurate assessment considering some of the issues they have with civil rights.

I totally agree.
