People caught sending text messages while behind the wheel could be fined $100 the first time, according to a proposal to be introduced Wednesday by Councilman Chris Bortz. Fines would escalate to $500 for subsequent offenses. He said the city shouldn't wait for an accident before taking action.

April 22, 200916 yr How could this possibly be enforced? I text all the time while driving, and it's not a problem for me... I agree. I'm constantly texting while driving and I havent had an accident yet. I've gotten to the point where I can text without even looking at my phone so I can concentrate on driving.
April 22, 200916 yr I got into an accident at the curves on Pippin Rd due to txting 3 years back. Hit a brand new Benz.. trust me I paid for it.. and now I never txt while driving.. Its super dangerous!
April 22, 200916 yr Texting while driving is more dangerous than driving drunk. Absolutely false. I doubt many people text in areas with substantial traffic or while going high speeds or on dangerous/curvy terrain. When I text and drive I dont even look at the phone except a quick glance right before I send the message, and i usually wait for the right time. Usually I'll start a message at a red light, and if the light turns green before I'm done, ill just finish it and put the phone down. Seems pretty harmless to me... Personally, I think eating and driving is pretty dangerous, and I've seen women actually puting on makeup while driving, so I don't know why they are singling out texting.
April 22, 200916 yr Some lady I was going hiking with last week brought her dog, and the damn animal was jumping all around the car, hoping in the driver's seat, putting its paws on the steering wheel, and causing general chaos. But she didn't mind. It was scary. I don't text while driving, but I do receive calls via a bluetooth headset. I'm now programming it so that I can say commands and remain hands-free.
April 22, 200916 yr I feel this is very unfair. Most of the people for this ban are old and more than likely can't text at all anyway. I also can text without looking at my phone, and I know this would hurt me but if they ban texting while driving they need to ban talking on the phone while driving.
April 22, 200916 yr If you can texting, then can we ban: 1. Eating while driving. 2. Applying makeup while driving. 3. Loose animals in vehicle while driving. 4. Talking on the phone while driving. Then, they can begin bi-yearly, mandatory drivers licensing examinations and examinations for eyesight. The latter of which would cripple many elderly drivers who have poor eye sight and poor reflex ability. Charge people for the privilege to drive, as many other industrialized countries have done (and I'm not referring to the paltry fees they charge in this state for licensing).

A 16 year old took out 4 motorcycles on Route 4 and Mulhouser last summer when she ran a RED light. While I don't know if they ever proved anything, it was rumored she mentioned originally that she was texting. My father worked with one of the most critically injured in the crash and he is still not back to work. It would be pretty easy to enforce. JUST BAN IT!! I was reading an article about a new devise that some groups are trying to get installed into new cars (or cars with teens) that disable cell phone service while the car is running. I gave up even answering the phone while driving when I almost hit a pedestrian that I didn't see. You can THINK your a pro at it but, unfortunately that one time you let your guard down and possibly cause harm/death to you or somebody else,..........well it will be too late then!!
April 22, 200916 yr Most 16 year old chicks are a danger on the road anyway. I can see the argument from both sides but like edale said there's no way it could possibly be enforced. When I text my phone is usually closer to my lap and can't be seen from the window.
April 22, 200916 yr While going to lunch today, some co-workers and I spotted two cars where the driver was either texting or dialing. And we only went about a mile. Driving 75 everyday, I can say it is fairly easy to spot people who are being distracted by a cellular device. I'm not saying this to prove any of you guys wrong. airforce_jm, you may very well be good at concealing it and that's fine. I will say though, that the majority of the public has a hard enough time keeping their oversized SUV's and other 5000-7000 lbs. projectiles in their own lane without being distracted with other crap.
April 22, 200916 yr Should have no problem texting on the streetcar. Exactly! I will say though, that the majority of the public has a hard enough time keeping their oversized SUV's and other 5000-7000 lbs. projectiles in their own lane without being distracted with other crap. It seems that every time I see a driver do something stupid, such as taking up two lanes, they are almost always yakking away on a phone (seriously, people can't go more than 30 minutes without talking to someone??). I do agree that other activities are just as dangerous, such as eating, applying makeup, or constantly turning around to discipline kids when driving. I cringe when I see any of this.
