Does anyone actually buy into these theories? All the Mayan calender hoopla...all i know is im having too much fun in life, it better not end.

Not so much buy in, but I find them interesting.  Do some googling involving a "four dimensional hypersphere" if you want to really freak out.  The gist is that time goes in cycles and the end/beginning point (2012) has some big bang type properties.  There's also a line of theories that the change taking place then would be more subtle, maybe more positive.

everyone else who has ever predicted the end of the word was wrong so far.  I bet the Mayans will be as well. But I'll tell you what, that one guy who finally gets it right would be feeling pretty smug if he wasn't dead.

12/21/2012 is all about X-Files in my opinion!

I think itd be pretty cool to be able to say "I was there when the world ended"

Every idea in history sounded stupid until it didn't... like the world being flat, or us being the center of the universe.  Whether the world ends in 2012 or not, it's pointless to worry about it.

Um, for the Mayans, the world has already ended. Just as it did for the Aztecs, Sioux, Iriquois, Hopi, etc. etc. Wonder what date they predicted for their demise??

My world could end tomorrow if I forget to look both ways before crossing Clifton Boulevard. So live for today!

But who would you say it to?

Straight to hell for that!  LOL

Agreed!

Thats the day after my 32nd birthday!

32??  Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit!

I think you are safe unless you are a yellow star person!  There is still time to contribute!  Save yourselves!!!!!

If we were poor, ignorant on science, and essentially at the cultural develoment of 100BC, we would probably have a firm belief in it.

Add this one to how many "prophecies" about the specific date and time of the end of the world?

I believe it will end, don't get me wrong. I just don't think anyone on Earth knows when.

The Mayans still exist as a people, just not as a state.  Or more accurately, group of city-states.

I've heard that the Mayan calendar thing is actually the wrong date- new calculations of the Mayan calendar systems put the date a hundred years or so further out.  Not that I believe any of it, but it's an interesting cosmology that they have.

Edit- looking around, I can't find the article I had read, or any other reference to it, so take what I just said with a grain of salt. On the other hand, we're discussing prophesy, so give it equal credence with the rest of the discussion.

I'm pretty sure he doesn't...

I watched Nostradamus: 2012 and the ARmegeddon series' on the Discovery or history channel. Nothing really convinced me. I'm not changing the way I'm living.

That sh!t is all propaganda. Discovery and History are worse than Youtube. They're fearmongers. What sucks is that the armageddon day is 12/21 - practically the whole year has to go by before we can finally be like " I told your dumb @ss. Remember y2k?".

No.

C'mon man, you know ... it's when there was all that hype about computers crashing and causing the world to end?

I tried to look up information about this conspiracy and all I got was some stuff about how the elite Illuminati 'already knows' about it and that they have sophisticated bunkers that will allow them to survive. But these are the same guys who say the Illuminati is supposed to fulfill the New World Order. How the hell are we supposed to be their subordinates in this new world if we're all dead and they're alive? So which conspiracy theory is true?! And what about the Free-masons? Nothing these people say make any sense. For God's sake, the Mayans sacrificed humans to the Gods to 'keep the universe in balance' while chewing coca (cocaine) leaves. It's all nonsense.

^None of them are true?  Just a guess....

David, do you think we would tell the non-contributors the truth?  Give till it hurts, and be enlightened!

LMAO!  If we could tear him away from the pale hipsters, he might be able to scratch together some funds for UO.

Who would you be saying that to, exactly?

Remember y2k?".

Hell yeah I do!  It effed up my old Compaq Presario from 1994!  Windows Explorer showed all the dates as 8888.  I've never recovered since......

  • 3 years later...

The Mayans just released their seven-day weather forecast for the weekend.......

The end is near!

I don't know if the world will end or not. I do, however, know one thing; I'll be hammered drunk on Friday, regardless

People claiming the world will end always show the aztec calendar which shows they dont know what they are talking about.

Mayans didn't believe in a linear time system like us, they believe in cycles. They saw time as always renewing itself. Time cycles. The West believes in a beginning of time and an end of time, painted out by the bible, or scientific theories.

12/21/12 is an end of the 13th period of 5,125 years. The Mayans only mention this date twice and place no significance on it and do not mention any end of time. The calendar and other mayan writings also talk about dates way past 12/21/2012. They list dates over 28 octillion years past this year.

Some 2012 believers claim that the earth's equator, the solar system's planetary orbits, and the equator of the milky way will all align. This will cause the earth to experience extreme astronomical forces. The problem is that this already happened 1998 and nothing happened and nobody talked about it. Plus the Maya couldnt have, and didnt believe this. Just made up by 2012ers.

Others claim solar flares will cause an end of time. The problem with this is that the solar flares wont peak again till the end of 2013 and wont be as extreme as previous ones in the year 2000.

Also the modern Maya do not believe in the 2012 end of time. They believe a new cycle will begin and do not understand why the West believes in this crap.

People just want to make money off of this.

i think their theory is that this is more of a cosmic inevitability, rather than being able predict actual events (such as the Conquistadors).

I have also heard that they may have felt this date to be uplifting, rather than grim.  There have been plenty of people who have predicted the world would end throughout history.

I doubt anybody actually believes it.  its just something to make smalltalk about.

aren't mayans the OG westerners?

Looks like the Mayans got this one wrong.

I'll try my own hand:

I predict that the world will end in approximately 5 billion years (give or take 200 million or so) when the sun becomes a red giant.

I bet you $20 it ends sooner. Deal?

This is the Matrix.  We've all taken Red pills.  You're all dead!
