Yes, the steel joists run north south (front to back), so this wall is only supporting itself.

  • I was onsite with the owner and engineer this morning. Still not able to get in but did a visual assessment from the exterior and drone. Good thing is less damage than was expected, most of the floor

  • The "Jackson Brewery" and underneath "Kleiner Bros" (who built this iteration of the brewery) are stone letters that are embedded in the brick. They have only recently come to light in the past 2-3 ye

Saw this collapse this morning.  Seems like everything between this building and the Imperial Theater is for sale and in very bad shape.  That corner of OTR is very endangered.

Yeah, there are a couple of buildings on Mohawk Place that lost their roof back during the windstorm and are still open.

Great old pic.

Further damage to the historic Hamilton/Sohn/Mohawk/Clyffside/Red Top brewery.  This occurred last evening in a couple of stages.  At this point, I am not confident the owner will be able to secure the money to repair/rebuild.

I noticed that tonight on a drive-by. It's not load-bearing, but it is sustaining damage and involves an entire wall at this point. I did notice the electric was on tonight inside.

Wow.  I'm a historic preservation nut, and even I'm starting to question whether there is something worth saving here.  Most of the historically significant architectural elements were removed from this building when that second story was added, and now the rest of the structure is slowly collapsing.  Is there more to this building than we're seeing here?  I'm not familiar with it beyond this thread.

What is happening with the building ?  Is the owner taking charge ?

Spackle and duct tape.  That should do it.

Just got word it's coming down today.

Sigh. Do you know what time?

Please tell me that the cool smokestack is part of the adjacent building.

In the next hour or so.  The smokestack is part of a different section.

The rear portion of the building was built later and shares the north wall of the building being demolished.  The city is planning on pinning the wall to the floor structure to the north before removing the remaining floor and roof of the building being demolished.  I am told they also intend to remove the floor and backfill the basement as well, however access will be maintained to the lagering cellars via the rear building.

I agree that the aesthetics of the building were lost years ago.  However, the building is of historical significance (re: brewery history), is part of a larger complex, and is a corner building.  It deserved to be saved.

The bigger picture here is the same story we keep hearing about owners who don't keep up simple regular maintenance.  A few thousand dollars would have kept the roof watertight, saved the owner from a $50,000-$100,000 demolition lien, and made the building available for future redevelopment.  This is happening all over the neighborhood.  Now there is a gaping hole, a giant lien on the property, and you're back to square one.

^Exactly.  Believe me, I'm not arguing that we need to tear buildings down.  But given what the pictures were showing and the level of damage to original structure's character via renovations, it didn't look good.  I totally agree about the maintenance.  Also, the pictures illustrate why actual tuckpointing is preferable to just skimming an existing brick wall.  Sure it's more expensive, but it looks much better and you don't have bricks crumbling behind a smooth facade.

Visual confirmation today that a new roof is going on the burnt-out part of the Morelein Brewery.  They had a crew of about 10 guys and a truckload of wood trusses.

That's awesome news!

Sam Adams expanding its Cincinnati brewery: EXCLUSIVE

Tom Demeropolis Reporter- Cincinnati Business Courier

Boston Beer Co. Inc. is expanding its Samuel Adams Brewery in Cincinnati’s West End.

According to documents filed with the Cincinnati Department of Planning and Building, the brewer is planning a 6,700-square-foot expansion. The contractor is listed as Cincinnati-based Reece-Campbell Inc. The building permit application applied for but not yet issued is for a “beer storage building addition.”

^They received a grant from the Ohio EPA (I believe) last year or two years ago to clean up the site they are now building on. It was a brownfield of some sort so they have had plans of expansion for a while. Good news that it's happening though!

As I said in the other thread, I hope part of the expansion involves a tap room.

haha. And as I just said in the other thread, I hope tours of the brewery could become commonplace. They aren't offered in most cases.

I've always felt that the Metal Blast building would be great for a restaurant and entertainment venue, while the Brewery District could become one of Cincinnati's premiere attractions.  There  were once several castles along this hillside, rising above Central Parkway  and into Over-the-Rhine, the home of Cincinnati's brewing industry.  Some structures still exist and many more could be recreated and embellished, while interfacing with the proposed tramway.

From what I understand, the most promising redevelopment is occurring in the Findlay Market area, about two blocks from the hillside.  The Christian Morelein Brewery is the focus of a prospective redevelopment north of the market.  Recently, the Dunlop Lofts opened nearby:

I would love to see 3CDC put  some resources into this area.  The so-called Beer Hall of Fame would be great in the Brewery District, surrounded by the rebuilt castles in the form of urban condominiums throughout this historic area.

What ever happened to the Beer Hall of Fame?

What happened to The Last Don?

What ever happened to Dirty Sandpit?

OTR urban winery opening alongside streetcar

http://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2016/09/07/otr-urban-winery-opening-alongside-streetcar.html

Over-the-Rhine's first winery since the heyday of Cincinnati as a wine-producing hub is opening just in time for patrons to take advantage of the streetcar.

Skeleton Root is opening its doors at 38 W. McMicken Ave. on Sept. 10, about two blocks from the northern-most streetcar (officially known as the Cincinnati Bell Connector) stop in OTR.

Odd Fellows almost ready to open just north of Rhinegeist:

Nice! When is Northern Row Brewery taproom scheduled to open?

I have no idea.  I talked to a guy there like 2 years ago and they were working on it then.

Is the Oddfellows bar space separate from the Mikey's Late Nite Slice? Or is this a combined space for both establishments?

Ahaha, you all are getting Columbused

I couldn't tell.  It's quite possible that the same entity is developing both.  There is still a vinyl poster company in another part of the building, it appears.

At 32:20 we see a high-class event for automotive journalists in a pre-industrial cellar no different than our various brewery cellars:

The Northern Row brewery tap room between Henry St. and McMicken (just north of the streetcar car barn) is close to opening.

^ Wow, those tables are so cool.

Mikey's and Oddfellows are owned by the same people.  They are two separate places with I believe separate entries but are in the same building.  The bathrooms for both places are in the middle and are shared between the spaces.

Was that at the Brewery District meeting? I went to a meeting at that brewery a year ago when they were supposed to open last summer. Glad they are finally close to opening. I remember the owner saying they would have food and outdoor seating along the unnamed alley along the west side. Seems like a great spot.

Any idea what they're still finishing @jmecklenborg?  Like you said they've been "close" to opening for forever and that taproom sure looks ready for the public.

I was there yesterday, unless someone told you they were separate places, you'd never know.

BTW, this building owned by Model Group is in pretty rough shape right now (the walls are visibly bowing) and they're trying to arrange some emergency repairs to try to save it... if the crazy winds we're expected to get this evening don't blow it down first. ?

It does look pretty bad (not that it looked great before the fire, honestly) but only the 3rd floor and roof are wood framed if I recall correctly, the rest is masonry and concrete.  So I would hope it's still salvageable.  It's just unfortunate that the stabilization work and new roof from a couple years ago was basically for naught thanks to this.

Brewery District organizers are saying on Twitter they have plans for Jackson after the fire. I guess they will see if the building can be stabilized, which I would have to presume it can be. But that's just me guessing from simply looking at the pictures.
