Moving along I walk south toward Spruce on this quaint and romantic little lane.

This urban deck was groovy!

Now walking west on Spruce, some shots of nice building.  Some with ground level retail.

A delight.  Just what needed!!!  An espresso to quench my thirst

The street car line runs right in front

After recharging my battery, we’re off again.  Another little alley, but I wasn’t going down this one!

A new restaurant to the block, should be open soon.

Ladies, if your going to leave your windows open, at least have some sort of window guard or screen!  I’m 6’4” I should not be able to walk past and look directly into your crib!

DSC02678.jpg

Especially when you’re on the ground floor!  Idiot!  As you can see, the first floor of the building is pretty low.  I wouldn’t have even turned to look in if you had said, “Hey you”.  What if I was a weirdo or something?!  Use some common sense!

We continue to the next block and I get a massive headache…UGH

DSC02680.jpg

DSC02681.jpg

Oh no, it’s not a headache, it’s my gaydar!  Ms. Woody’s!  That place is a mess.

The PATCO train to New Jersey.  I took a few pictures down there and you don’t want to see them.  The mezzanine levels of these stations is deplorable, there is trash, fresh fecal matter, pee.  It is truly scary!  Anyone who complains about how trashy RTA stations look, I’ll send you photo’s of these.

Across the street is the Phiadelphia Muses mural

DSC02686.jpg

One of my preferred greasy spoons closed.  Awww

I don’t know what this building is, but I’ve always loved it

El Vez

Strong drinks…too strong for 12 Noon!  Whew!  The old school photo both is a must see/use!

DSC02692.jpg

We stopped by 10 Arts.  What a disappointment!  This is no Le Bernardin!  Avoid this place, epic prices and a big fat epic fail!

The Continental.  Another fun Starr restaurant (a sister restaurant to El Vez).  The music here is cute.  It’s modern rat pack.  Very fun!

I love this place.  Sassy old school diner with a cranky crotchety staff!

DSC02742.jpg

I remember when this place was urban outfitters.  This block was a mess and dangerous just 10/11 years ago.  There was nothing around here.  Then a developer came in and worked the entire three blocks.  Sounds familiar, like East fourth….humm

Rittenhouse Square

DSC02746.jpg

DSC02745.jpg

They even have a barney’s co-op now

DSC02747.jpg

I can remember when there was nothing on this block but a gap outlet, micked d’s and movie theater, now this…..

DSC02748.jpg

Well that concludes my little walk in the city of brotherly love.

Exquisite

Hehe.  A word not used nearly enough.  Another great set MTS

Thanks kids.

Some beautiful buildings. I really liked the building that had the Hard Rock Cafe in it.

Wow, the transformation of Philly is absolutely spectacular. I need to get to this city.  Thanks for the thread MTS!

Remember kids I was only in Center City.  Some areas right outside of center city make East 55 street area in midtown Cleveland look like the suburbs.

Excellent. The mural is one of my favorite pieces.

In the early sixties, parts of Center City were a zoo at night. The area around City Hall seemed to be mostly a meat market. The courtyard in the the center of City Hall was open at night, and one time as I walked through there some guy came up and started showing me photos, pimping young guys. I was pretty sure I recognized a photo of one guy from the base where I was stationed.

In the mid-sixties when the riots broke out, they were using the City Hall courtyard as a holding and processing center. All the entrances except one were blocked off, and at the one entrance they built a ramp where they'd back up closed trucks and herd the "passengers" into the courtyard like livestock.

Center City was full of activity all day long and into the night then. It was crazy, but didn't seem all that dangerous to me.

When I returned in the late seventies, I was shocked to see many vacant stores and very little activity on the street. At night it didn't seem safe except in the vicinity of a few nightclubs where there were people around. It's remarkable to see that vitality is returning to the area.

What if?? I think you automatically qualify as a wierdo by taking the picture of her sitting on her bedroom floor, im just sayin

But seriously, nice pictures, i need to make it to philadelphia soon, it looks like a really neat and historic city. City Hall looks like a French building to me, not sure what its influence was.

My fave in the series. Damn you, now I want to visit!

She called out to us!  I wouldn't have even looked to the right if she hadn't said anything.  I was closest to the curb, my BFF to my right and her building to his right.  He's only like 5'7" so he didn't see here, he just heard, "hey..hey you", then we see a head, when I looked I noticed no screen and took a closer look and I could see right in.

Why live on a floor that low with no screen or security especially if you're a girl?  I could have reached in and taken stuff.

Haha!

That is a bit sketchy to me. Not having a screen or any other form of protection when you have your window open isnt a smart idea no matter who you are. Ah well, best of luck to her i guess.

Wow!!  I need to go to Philly ASAP.  Thanks, MTS, for the awesome tours.

I wonder how expensive these gems are...  I bet nothing lower than a million.

DSC02664.jpg

Hmm...everyone always compares OTR to Olde City and Society Hill, but I really don't see it.  OTR has a lot more retail and the scale is slightly less intimate.

Great tour MTS.  I love the comments.

OTR is more New York than Philly (which goes rowhouse instead of apartments even just off the big commercial districts).

Society Hill/Old City has much more retail than Over-the-Rhine (Third alone) but I agree that it's less intimate/more New York than the "comfy" Old City.

Man do I love the Rittenhouse Square area.  And yes, Society Hill is amazingly intimate and cute.  You just can't go wrong with that colonial charm.  Thanks for sharing these pictures of one of the United States' best urban cores.

Ah, Woody's.  Boy did I ever have a drunken night there when I was last in Philly in September '03.  After 4 drinks, including a long island iced tea, I'm lucky I even made it back to my friend's apartment.  And then getting up the steps without any side railing to the lofted bedroom while avoiding falling off the side was an even bigger accomplishment.

Great photos!  I certainly enjoyed viewing them.  Philly most definitely is a fantastic city!
