May 4, 200817 yr The only place I can think to put the car is at the meters in the median of the street, on South Moreland. The meters are located between Dave's and National City Bank. and Shaker Square South and Drexmore. That's visible and close to a big n'hood destination. Good idea. Where's the population center of gravity in the area? North or south of the square? Would a Coral spot within the square be even better? Or an RTA spot just west of the station? Someone suggested the small street off N Moreland behind Dewey's that leads to the big parking lot. Thoughts?

Someone suggested the small street off N Moreland behind Dewey's that leads to the big parking lot. Thoughts? I gave that location there because it convient to all parts of the square and infront of the bus stop. The square is equally busy at all times, its a walking neighborhood and this is just south of the train station. There is no metered parking north of the square. You can't park at RTA spots, they will tow you. However, if you work out an agreement with RTA that is something different. The parking lot in the NE quadrant closes over night at I think midnight.
May 5, 200817 yr If there is room to go out of the general Downtown areas you have mentioned, I would suggest you put one at East 4th and Prospect. This perhaps instead of the Tower City location. -alot of foot traffic from the games to the bars and restaurants= high visibility -potentially available lot parking at the lot to the SE or SW of the intersection, a City Wheels car would look sweet parked in the corner spaces and might be safer than in a meter space -a residential base including proximity to the more affordable units Downtown at East 4th/Huron Sq/The Osborn -proximity to the EC and Tower City allows it to tie in fairly well with Downtown public transit options Also, instead of Playhouse Square proper, I might try to get a space on East 12th in front of Reserve Square. -It seems to have as much foot traffic as Huron or East 14th -It is closer to more residents- Reserve Square, The Chesterfield, The Statler, The Avenue District, The Allerton Hotel, and the two subsidized senior housing towers -The Reserve Square Market is an important neighborhood activity center, like Constantino's in the Warehouse District -(I do like the visibility of the East 14th site, though) Whichever sites you choose, I'm very excited that you are bringing City Wheels to Downtown. I have been considering ditching my car, but I need it a few times a month. Sound familiar?
May 5, 200817 yr Ryan, As one of your loyal University Circle customers, I can't wait to see the ones Downtown now that I've moved :) For the Warehouse District, I would vote for either St. Clair in front of Chophouse/Blue Point/D'vine (great visibility, good architectual and usage block) or on West 9th between St. Clair & Lakeside. Although I live on West Sixth, I'd avoid it because of the high number of potentially vomitting pedestrians.
June 4, 200817 yr city wheels downtown would be great. We would potentiially use it in the winter. I never really "understood the OC location (wasnt is off Franklin or Bridge area?)
April 24, 200916 yr I know CityWheels has been frozen in the credit crisis, but I hope expansion does eventually happen. I currently use the University Circle location...and I live in TREMONT! (And work downtown.) And, occasionally, it's still worth it. It is what has made car-free possible. (As a benefit to University Circle, it's also made me realize how accessible that neighborhood actually is.) As much as I'd love a Tremont spot, I realize that's probably not realistic density-wise. However, a spot near Tower City (Where most buses go in our hub-based system) would be ever-so useful.
August 16, 201113 yr I'm looking at going car-less in Cleveland and came across My City Wheels. According to their website, they're located in University Circle and have a strike over Shaker Square. Anyone know about the program? I just wrote to them, arguing they should expand to the surface lot right next to my building at 668 Euclid :).
August 30, 201113 yr City Wheels has closed and is being bought up by Zipcar. There is also Hertz On Demand available at Oberlin.... Cleveland State University, Zipcar Inc. offer car-sharing program on campus By SCOTT SUTTELL 3:08 pm, August 29, 2011 Cleveland State University said it has established a partnership with Zipcar Inc. to offer a car-sharing program on campus. CSU members pay a $35 annual fee for the service, and rates on all Zipcars start at $8 per hour and $66 per day. The university said gas, insurance, roadside assistance and up to 180 miles of driving per day are included in the hourly and daily rates. Cars can be reserved for as little as an hour or for multiple days. The car-sharing program is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to all students, faculty and staff members ages 18 and older. August 30, 201113 yr Brilliant! I'm assuming non-CSU students can use the service, too? Doesn't sound like it, based on the article. But the article may not be correct (or I didn't read it right). I'd be surprised if Zipcar refused a potential customer at a new site. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
August 30, 201113 yr It read it as CSU students get a special rate and that perhaps us regular folk will have to pay the regular rate...?

August 30, 201113 yr So if I want to join city wheels... which I have been wanting to, but could not for a while because of tickets.... does this mean its not available or did Zipcar buy it out locally?
August 30, 201113 yr This is the e-mail I received last Thursday from Ryan...... Friends, Please forgive my sending an impersonal group message -- I'm hoping you can help us complete the "good news closing" of CityWheels Carshare. I need to find buyers for four CityWheels cars by September 2nd (i.e. - WITHIN ONE WEEK). If you know of email lists at work, etc where the announcement below would be OK to post, I would be grateful for your help. These cars are in good shape, and are priced amazingly low ($1500-2000 below bluebook value!) only because I'm pressed for time. I would appreciate anything you can do to help spread the word this week. Thank you! Ryan McKenzie P.S. - We're facilitating the entry of a much larger carshare into Cleveland -- which was our goal in starting CityWheels six years ago. Lots of pictures available on request, of course. The cars are located in University Circle. The prices are already thousands below bluebook value, so are fairly firm. I will consider NEAR offers. BACKGROUND INFO These cars are being retired from CityWheels -- a small carsharing club my wife and I coordinated for the last five years. Carefully screened members drove a few times per month for shopping, errands, appointments, etc. Most were graduate students in medicine, nursing, law and engineering at Case Western Reserve University (i.e. - responsible, high- performing people). They didn't need to drive very often, so they shared a car instead of buying their own. I bought each vehicle new from Motorcars in Cleveland Heights, and personally took them for all maintenance. We are as honest as they come -- I will tell you everything I know about each car's history and upcoming needs. No surprises. They are priced so low only because we are disbanding the club -- we'd like to pay our creditors and finish up. But they have all been solid, dependable cars and we would otherwise keep them for years more. Contact me at [email protected] or by tel/txt at 216.308.1059 Thank you, Ryan McKenzie ** "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
August 30, 201113 yr Wow, interesting development. Hopefully this move leads to more Zip Cars down the road. I know there's an economy of scale issue with ZipCar operations, so I'm optimistic.
August 31, 201113 yr Ford and Zipcar court college kids with high-tech Focus By James R. Healey, USA TODAY Money-losing car-share company Zipcar is putting 1,000 Ford Focus compacts into its college rental fleets on 250 U.S. campuses, giving Ford access to young potential buyers who might not try a Ford otherwise. The move also lets Zipcar piggyback onto Ford's growing reputation as a tech-savvy automaker. "The technology in the new Fords looks more like an android or iPhone," says Zipcar CEO Scott Griffith. Zipcar members, called "zipsters," are "early adopters, always on Facebook and other networks, always carrying smartphones — the Ford MyTouch and Sync technology, they'll want to test it," thus boosting Zipcar rentals. November 8, 201212 yr So now it seems there are only 3 Zipcars for all of Cleveland and they are all on the CSU campus? I'd say this didn't turn out to be such a good thing after all.
November 8, 201212 yr I've noticed that too when scouting out transport options for weekend trips. I'm surprised there isn't demand enough for some cars at University Circle. Though I think there may be some age restrictions on zipcar membership and I'd guess virtually every grad student at UC has his or her own wheels. Given the high cost of education, it constantly amazes me how much students spend on private cars, but I guess it's still scene as a lifestyle necessity in most places.
November 9, 201212 yr I'm surprised there isn't demand enough for some cars at University Circle. Enterprise Rental Car has their WeCar car-sharing brand at UC, but it's for CWRU students and faculty. I do not believe it's for the general population but I wonder how closely they enforce this. After all do they really want to deny themselves extra business?..... http://www.wecar.com/join-wecar/program-details/case-student "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
November 20, 201212 yr ^Thanks KJP, that's good to hear, I didn't know about the Enterprise cars. One of the best parts of zip car is having access to the whole fleet in the city (or the country, really), so it's kind of a bummer CSU and CWRU are using different companies, but still good news the option exists for the Case community. I know bike sharing is the new glamour project, but for me, car share operations are a much more significant amenity, especially in a city like Cleveland where trips to the burbs are still somewhat of a necessity due to limited retail options. I can buy a bike for a couple hundred$, but being able to live without a car is serious savings.
