I really miss that tower but I will say the new balconies matching those above the cornice are a wonderful restoration I hadn't noticed before.

  • Just spoke to someone from CRM, and they are opening a pop up bar in the Schofield called Lake Effect at the corner of East 9th and Euclid.

  • I spoke to the bartender last night. He said that Lake Effeft as an xmas themed bar will remain open until January 15th. Then it will probably remain open as another bar afterward. If this is this is

Clock tower that was originally there. It was pretty sweet and would be great to have back.

And to show that drawing is photo-accurate, here's a colorized 1905 photo of the Schofield.....

We may not remember those images, but we do remember this:

Wow.  I had no idea lafont was that old.  He's right up there with MTS!

Yuck! I'm glad it doesn't look like that anymore. It floors me that people thought it was a good idea to cover up beautiful facades like this.

Anyway, East 9th continues its transformation from a 9-to-5 business district to a 24-hour everything district. :)

Ahh, thanks.

'voussoirs' are coming along.

Took a tour of the 9 this afternoon (WOW!  Those pics coming later...) But took a few of the Schofield while outside and on the Azure roof bar.  Amazing to see the details coming back to life.  Looks great.

I love this building.  Anybody know why on the 5th floor from the top, the windows seem to be about a foot (or more) shorter than the rest of the floors.  So many unique features to this building that I can't keep from looking at it when in that area.

never seen that "colorized" picture before either.  amazing what people find on this site.  thx for posting it.

This is turning out to be an awesome looking intersection!  Outstanding work :-)

Love these pictures! Yeah this is gonna be real stunning

Let's look inside the Schofield Building -- from the 10th floor of the neighboring City Club Building. You can see metal studs are now in place. And the open windows on these chilly days indicate something inside needs to be dried, so perhaps drywall, plaster work and painting is underway?

Delayed Kimpton Hotel set to open downtown (Cleveland) in 2015

By JAY MILLER

Published:September 2014

The developer of the Schofield Building in the heart of downtown Cleveland has set a mid-2015 opening for the Kimpton Hotel and apartments under construction in the historic building.

While that's not the firmest of opening announcements, it's a positive sign for a project that has had a rocky history. It has been a victim of a difficult hotel lending environment that remains cautious after the market collapse and decline in hotel occupancy that followed the Great Recession.

Walking down Euclid Ave this morning, I noticed that the crews have removed what looks like an entire wall on the 7th floor's western facade.  Funky.

Awesome!

I'll be in the office tomorrow and hopefully get a good look inside that opening to see what's going on.

And with all the other investment going on at that corner, the City Club Building looks comparatively dilapidated. We're moving out of the building in November, so they can announce its housing conversion anytime....

Turns out the theoretical KJP walkway is much too far below my lofty office perch to be of much use to me. Perhaps one of the lesser office tenants might use it..... :)

^ Wow some of that beige brick is a mess. At least we have UO positioned very close to the rehab action!

^Are you sure that the beige brick is part of the Schofield?  It looks like is might be part of the City Club Building which is not currently being rehabbed.

Ha! You're right. I need a bigger monitor.

^Yeah that's the City Club, which is in major need of masonry restoration work.

Big time. The building's guts need at least as much help. But, anyway, that's the view of the Schofield from my perch.

Good to see some of the first floor but bad if one can no longer walk on that side of East Ninth Street!

This is going to be one hot area once the Palamor, Le Meridien open. There will be lots of competition for the upscale hotel customer. Something that Cleveland has lacked.

Do we officially know that the Kimpton will be under the Hotel Palomar flag? For some reason I've always kind of preferred the Hotel Monaco name to the Hotel Palomar name. But I truly think all Kimpton properties should have their own individual names, like they've done with the Prescott Hotel, Argonaut Hotel, Hotel Triton, Hotel Solamar, etc. I was really hoping this would be called The Schofield...

Agree.  Like Hotel Burnham in Chicago.

I don't think there has been anything official from Kimpton, but waaaay upthread IIRC there was some semi-official noise Kimpton was considering a distinct name (like "The Schofield" or something, which would be sweet.

Generally speaking, Hotel Monacos are adaptive reuse of architecturally significant old buildings, while Palomars are new-build or contemporary reuse of a more recent building.  Both are the Kimpton's upscale brands.  I'm not sure if things have changed from Kimpton's perspective (with all the recent Cleveland buzz), but I seem to recall a Kimpton official saying Cleveland could not support an upmarket Kimpton.  So, it very well could be the Hotel Schofield.  Personally, I'd love a Monaco, like their glitzy old Philly property.

Schofield Building downtown Cleveland redevelopment progress, from 10th floor of City Club Building.

Other way around. They're covering those windows. They first added the cement block and now they're covering the cement block with brick.

Ouch. I'm actually surprised you're allowed to do this.

Weird - I'm assuming that's where the utility shaft will be?

Probably a elevator shaft or fireproof stairway

I saw them cutting holes through the floors back there a year or so ago.

Can someone explain how it's cheaper to brick over the windows vs. keeping them as decorative coverings over the cinderblock?

Can someone explain how it's cheaper to brick over the windows vs. keeping them as decorative coverings over the cinderblock?

Oddly enough, bricked over windows seemed to have made their way down to the lowest of the low in terms of urban design. The newly rebuilt Taco Bell in Lakewood was built with faux bricked in windows on its side! Yep, a new fast food structure was designed to look like it once had windows but was now bricked over. I hope this is a short lived fad in design.

I'm with you, it would be nice to keep the windows as decoration, even if it's a wall behind them.

I'll be concerned about these windows when/if some idiots decide to tear down the City Club building.

Not likely. City Club will be renovated -- for offices.

Is that what you think, or what you know?

The owner's leasing agent told me. Interior renovations will begin this winter. I told her I was surprised because I figured the City Club Building would turn at least partially residential. She said no, it will stay as offices. I probably shouldn't be surprised considering all the specialty spaces with extra security for all the wholesale jewelers in the building. Anyway....

Interesting, thanks!  Do you know if they are going to clean up the exterior a bit?
