Cleveland: Downtown: Euclid & 9th Tower / Schofield Building Redevelopment

Featured Replies

Yes, a number of other Kimpton's are named this way, such as The Burnham Hotel in Chicago.  IMO, they are some of their nicest hotels, where the Palomar and Monaco feel a little more generic.

  • Just spoke to someone from CRM, and they are opening a pop up bar in the Schofield called Lake Effect at the corner of East 9th and Euclid.

  • I spoke to the bartender last night. He said that Lake Effeft as an xmas themed bar will remain open until January 15th. Then it will probably remain open as another bar afterward. If this is this is

Just about ready for the "S" and the "C"

I hope they get some sort of award for renovation.  It looks like they took very good care of this building

I was browsing through the earlier parts of this thread, and I'm still amazed at the total transformation of this building. It looked like Berlin 1945 when the paneling was removed, and now it's looking like it will be one of the most attractive buildings in downtown Cleveland.

I agree.  What an amazing transformation!!

"Berlin 1945" lol Cleveland has definitely experienced its own version of the Marshall plan downtown in recent years

I was just Downtown this past Saturday. I'm amazed at how different everything is! Cleveland is breathing again! I did notice the gorgeous "Chipotle" building and wondered why I never noticed it before, then I found these picture of the renovation. It's stunning! I can't believe it was covered up all these years.  I applaud the person(s) who brought it back to it's glory! It's a beautiful glimpse of what Euclid used to be, back in the early days. Does anyone know what the building is used for? Apartments? Does the building have a name?

Welcome artkissed! Glad you found this forum. I think you will be blown away by the amount of information is available in each of the threads about all of the developments in Cleveland that are so numerous that many of us who are regulars have a difficult time keeping track of everything.

The answers to your questions are throughout this thread. But to save you from having to sift through 31 pages of it, the easiest question to answer is the name which is the subject of this thread: the Schofield Building. It was also its original name when the building was built in 1901 (the date appears on the side of the building in newly restored numerals). Circa 1960, the building was modernized in the metal cladding and renamed as the Euclid-9th Tower. It was home to many medical offices. My late father's dentist was in this building when he was a boy in the 1930s.

As for your other questions, they can be answered at the construction contractor's website:

In case the contractor removes this page upon conclusion of the project, here is what it has to say:

Project Information

This 14-story, late Victorian, masonry and steel frame Schofield Building has been used for office and retail space during the past century.

Upon completion of the restoration and renovation, the 170,000 square-foot building will accommodate a mixed-use program. These elements will include a 112-suite Kimpton Hotel on floors 2-7, 52 luxury residential apartment units on floors 8-14, a ground floor specialty restaurant, and retail space.

In addition, the original ornamental terra cotta façade will be restored to preserve the building’s unique quality.

This project has to be the best exterior renovation of a historical building I've ever seen- they've done outstanding work.

No kidding. It has GOT to win some awards once complete. I hope the inside is given as much attention to detail as the inside.

The second picture does not show it well, but look at the columns (in disrepair) on the left compared to the new ones installed on the far right. Here's a pic further cropped.

^Ground-level retail?  Restaurant(s)?

Looking awesome! It looks like they still have months worth of work to do. Can't wait until it is finished.

Love the progress!!!  I'm interested to see some of the inside work.

Also, cant wait until that sidewalk is open again.  It's been blocked off for years!!!

Do we know yet if there will be street level retail?

^Based on the Crains 2013 article, the first floor will be occupied by the hotel and a restaurant.  No mention of retail.

"Mr. Intihar said a planned first-floor restaurant and the hotel would provide a more active street environment than if the building were strictly apartments."

The few Kimpton properties I've seen or stayed at have no retail, but they do offer a just above average restaurant with breakfast through dinner service.

Someone is spending a lot of time at Azure...

More like thirty seconds to take a photo.

Reprhase: Someone is visiting Azure frequently these days. 30 seconds a day puts the curiosity away!

Speaking of which. I emailed Heinen's a couple weeks ago asking if there was any plan to light the outside façade of the rotunda. They weren't sure about that but the person who responded said Geis is currently trying to fix the clock.

Re: Clock

It's staying just how it is and is set to exactly 9 o'clock on purpose.

Why?

"The 9," I'm guessing.

The twitter account is working but I'm getting a "no data received" message when trying to open the website.

^They could have been doing maintenance or something, try a different device or browser.

The website is working now.  Floor plans are available but there is no pricing listed.

Sounds amazing! More excited about these than The 9 apartments.

not much of a picture but in the last couple days is the first sign of (partially) finished interior , lighting and windows on ground - 2nd floors.

Those interiors are horrible.. I was expecting so much more. Very disappointing, especially at those price points.

I think "horrible" is a bit dramatic. What were you expecting?

^Incredibly over dramatic. They may not be your taste, but they are clean and modern. That was not a cheap rehab (considering all the exterior reconstruction) and apartment interiors have a somewhat temporary lifespan, so I would not worry too much.

I enjoy the contemporary lines of the apartments.  The walnut cabinetry provides some warmth to accommodate many tenant's style of furnishings.  The exterior is the star of this complex

I like 'em a lot.

I like the Japanese theme to them, especially the rolling paper doors. The kitchen cabinets really aren't my style though.

I like including the walnut cabinets.  Very warm.  Agree with comment made about that the design allows for a variety of furnishings from modern to more traditional.  I feel many new rehabs and new construction apartments pretty much require contemporary furnishings which can be a problem if you are moving from a house where you have accumulated more traditional (and often very expensive) furniture over the years (like empty nesters who are a driving force behind the move back to the city).

The thing that bothers me is the pervasive use of gray. I feel better about it if they had used wood flooring instead of carpet (especially in the living room).  The gray carpet combined with the gray walls looks bad, dead and cheap, imho.

Walls are easy to paint. And repaint.

I probably spend too much time commenting on relatively minor design aspects of projects in this city, but even I find it hard to care all that much about interiors of apartments I'll literally never see.* I'm sure these things will lease up without any problem.

*[Not that I don't have opinions tied to my personal tastes. I happen to agree with 3231. After so many years in cities where wood parquet is the default flooring material, carpet turns me off. But doesn't affect me one bit in this case.]
