  • Just spoke to someone from CRM, and they are opening a pop up bar in the Schofield called Lake Effect at the corner of East 9th and Euclid.

  • I spoke to the bartender last night. He said that Lake Effeft as an xmas themed bar will remain open until January 15th. Then it will probably remain open as another bar afterward. If this is this is

D*mn, this is a classy project.

Stunning.  This is why I could never live in a new city or any outer suburbs.

The exterior lighting looks fantastic. Hopefully that puts the pressure on Geis or whomever is in charge of lighting up the Rotunda. They need exterior lights too!

I can't wait to shop at Signage.

I'm not sure if this has been announced, but rumor has it that the restaurant will be Parkers. It'll be the second location (the first being in Avon Lake). Never been there, but it seems to have good reviews. http://www.parkersgrilleandtavern.com/

Parkers as in PARKER BOSLEY!?

^We can dream. But if Urbanophile is right, looks like a pretty generic "American" restaurant. Which is fine, I guess, but about as un-Kimpton-y as it gets.

Yes I would have expected something more daring for a Kimpton as well.  Certainly nothing wrong with classic dining, just didnt expect it for here.

Parkers as in PARKER BOSLEY!?

Not that Parker.  Parker is the name of the owner's son.  However, the owner and chef's pedigrees including previous experience managing Morton's in downtown Cleveland, so they're no strangers to fine dining.

Parker's review:

We went there kind of on a whim for my boyfriend's birthday in August. It was outstanding ... I've been meaning to go back! :-)

Seeing this building all lit up at night is going to be glorious.

It's nice to see that some of the fencing has been taken down.  It's been a long time since we've seen sidewalks!!!

Looks like a major big time downtown area in that photograph. Looks great!

Now PLEASE someone convince Heinen's/Geis to light the outside of the Cleveland Trust Rotunda!!! [emoji13] it drives me crazy that it's not

These were from a few days ago. Since they were taken, all of the scaffolding on the sidewalk has since been removed. It's the first time that corner is open and free from scaffolding in at least 5 years!

Wow, that looks great!  I love tasteful exterior lighting; this makes me excited to walk around downtown when it gets a little warmer.

Best historic renovation in this town in years!

Best historic renovation in this town in years!

I was just looking at old pictures of this building from the '00s to remind myself of what it looked like. This renovation is really pretty amazing. It better win some kind of award.

I was just going to say it must win some awards. They basically had to re-fabricate and rebuild the details of the entire facade. And they blend in perfectly. Really beautiful work.

More like best historic renovation in the state in years (or maybe ever)! The transformation is incredible.

Well worth the wait.

A few weeks ago I was dropping off a friend at The 9 for a New Years party and I got a couple pics of The Schofield across the street.  Just getting around to posting them now.

With the restoration of this and the 925, my vote is for this being one of the most awesome corners in the Midwest.

Parker's Grille and Tavern to open new restaurant at Kimpton Schofield Hotel

"Our kitchen will service the Kimpton Hotel guests, and eventually the residents living in The Schofield, in addition to the 120-seat restaurant,” said James Mowbray, co-owner of Parker’s with his wife, Victoria, in a statement."

New Kimpton hotel, the Schofield, opens in March and will include unique Cleveland features

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The city's new Kimpton hotel, the Schofield, will open next month with some uniquely Cleveland features, including a loaner guitar program and an overnight package that celebrates the city's craft beer scene.

With a nod to Northeast Ohio's historic Barber Match Co., vintage matchbooks have been transformed into custom prints in each room; and American Splendor comic books, by the late Harvey Pekar, will be available for paging through in the lobby.

The $50 million transformation of the former Schofield Building, at the corner of East 9th Street and Euclid Avenue, is nearly complete, after more than five years of renovation work that included the restoration of the building's original terra-cotta façade, covered by steel for the past 40 years.

In addition to 122 hotel rooms and six suites, the 1902 building -- named after the Cleveland architect, Levi Scofield, who designed it – also will feature 52 luxury apartments.

I love everything they have done with the renovation, so I'll just keep quiet about my opinion of that clamshell thing to myself

This project took over 8 years to come together, the anticipation especially since this got moving again, announced opening date, restaurant, award winning contention and then....a clamshell cover entrance?  Really hope this thing doesn't last.  There are no period piece awnings available to copy?

The clamshell mars the whole building.  I'll have to see it in person; regardless, it doesn't mesh with the restored history on this building.

Honestly it's not all that different from glass awnings that were found on buildings of similar era. Slightly less ornate, but even buildings from this time period had rather simple glass awnings in a lot of situations.

Almost matches the awning for The 9 across the street

Never noticed glass clamshells on turn of the 20th Century buildings before but the original pictures of this building show no canopy at all.

They definitely existed. They weren't super common but there are examples out there. I've used historic examples at work to base designs on for various buildings.

Not having a canopy historically before doesn't mean that would work now. It's a hotel. People get dropped off, have their bags dropped off, etc. Not having a covered area to do so would be insulting to guests and would definitely be looked down upon. Expecting a hotel to function without one is unrealistic.

Compared to other hotel canopies we've been seeing, it's fairly unobtrusive. As ink has explained in other threads, the fact that a new building element doesn't blend seamlessly is a requirement of the historic preservation program(s). The goal is to make clear what is a modern addition vs. original or faithfully recreated. So while the glass canopy may be more at home on a limestone art nouveau building, I think it's fine.

Didn't state that a canopy was not needed, just that this building didn't have one prior to the clamshell.  I'll wait to see this in person but the initial picture was not appealing.  Of course a canopy is needed, it's a hotel.

Many people said the same thing about the Drury Hotel canopy; a larger piece on the 1930 era School Admin Builing on the Mall.  The canopy faces E 6th Street, but that one as well looks a bit jarring, at least initially.

Downtown Kimpton Schofield Hotel Days Away from Opening

Posted By Sam Allard on Fri, Mar 4, 2016 at 10:05 am

The downtown Kimpton Schofield Hotel at the corner of Euclid Avenue and E. 9th Street is days away from hosting its first overnight guests. Travelers, suburban tourists or curious locals can reserve rooms at the newly renovated boutique-style hotel for stays beginning March 8.

The 122-room hotel, named after its original designer, local architect Levi Schofield, has been under renovation for the past five years. Among other things, the construction zone has complicated our walk from Scene HQ on Bolivar to the Cleveland Pickle. But the renovations of the original terra cotta exterior are sensational, and for our money, worth the wait.

I helped my brother move into the Schofield during a Cavs game last Monday night - if you drove down east 9th that evening, chances are you saw us carrying a mattress, dressers, tv's etc. across the street from the 9 haha

It is a beautiful building - nice large hallways, very nice appliances, flooring, countertops etc. I cannot believe this building will be fully operational within the next few months after being a complete eyesore since I started working downtown in 2007.  Although they are still doing some significant work on a lot of apartments, its close!  Such a great project.

^awesome -- i hope you and your bro can post pics of the interior for us sometime. very curious to see what they are doing inside.

The Schofield Hotel officially opened today.  They are offering $19.02 rates for March but I didn't find any.  Otherwise about 40% off regular rates.  If you travel and/or plan on staying here, be sure to sign up for their awards program.  Lots of discounts and If nothing else they treat your dog like royalty based on information in their rewards system.

Long-awaited Kimpton Hotel opens

The years of waiting are over: The Kimpton Schofield Hotel opened Tuesday, March 8, in downtown Cleveland. The 122-room hotel is having a grand opening later in April but is offering a cute special for the month of March: a $19.02 stay while availability lasts. That figure is significant because the building the boutique hotel occupies was opened in 1902. The structure even boasts the date construction began -- 1901

There needs to be a photo thread showing the before, during, and after for this project. The building awes every time I look at it.

I hope they start turning on the exterior lighting at night. The building really is stunning when lit up.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Downtown Cleveland's newest, hippest hotel opened its doors Tuesday, with yoga mats in every room, bicycles and guitars for guest use, and complimentary treats for the dog.

The Kimpton Schofield Hotel welcomed its first guests about 11 a.m., following a five-year, $50-million renovation project at the high-profile corner of East 9th Street and Euclid Avenue.

The first to check in: Bratenahl residents Tom Roulston and Doreen Stark, longtime Kimpton customers who brought their yellow lab, Roxy, for a one-night staycation in downtown Cleveland.

Roulston figures he's stayed at between 20 and 25 Kimpton hotels over the years, in cities including San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh – and now Cleveland.

I saw the hotel within the last week and still no decent sign on facade.  It's not like the hotel management had not time to have one designed and approved.  I wonder if the hotel name will also be on the piece that just out on Euclid such that one can identify the hotel when going down Euclid from the west.
