Well, it appears we've never had a thread devoted to our great library system we have in Cleveland.  (Cleveland Public Library website: http://cpl.org/ )

Crack open your date book -- celebrated storytellers are coming to Cleveland, starting this fall.

Seven authors -- including Neil Gaiman, Ann Patchett and Kareem Abdul-Jabber -- will appear for free as part of Cleveland Public Library's Writers & Readers series.

Garry Trudeau, Christopher Buckley, Mary Oliver and Jhumpa Lahiri will form the Writer's Center Stage line-up hosted by the Cuyahoga County Library Foundation. Its tickets are $30 apiece ($100 for a package of four).

I got to see Peter Bogdonovich speak at the library via a series like this, it was great.

This sounds really awesome!! Wish I could be there. I seem to say that a lot lately.

Mary Oliver!  She is utterly brilliant, and hers is a must-attend event.

Sleeping in the Forest

I thought the earth remembered me,

she took me back so tenderly,

arranging her dark skirts, her pockets

full of lichens and seeds.

I slept as never before, a stone on the river bed,

nothing between me and the white fire of the stars

but my thoughts, and they floated light as moths

among the branches of the perfect trees.

All night I heard the small kingdoms

breathing around me, the insects,

and the birds who do their work in the darkness.

All night I rose and fell, as if in water,

grappling with a luminous doom. By morning

I had vanished at least a dozen times

into something better.

^damn...i always search and search "cleveland public library" "library" "libraries" and nothing ever comes up...!  I swear to God I searched for a good 15-20 min to make sure since I thought I remembered starting one a couple years ago...

EDIT:  well at least this one is in City Disussion for other items...but still the article I posted is about events.

I say keep it.

Anybody know what the gathering outside the main building of the library is this morning?

i believe protests for govenor strickland wanting to slash the state library funding to next to nothing, which would pretty much cripple the system.

Tell Gov. Ted Strickland public libraries are needed now more than ever: Regina Brett

by Regina Brett/Plain Dealer Columnist

CLEVELAND -- Gov. Ted Strickland holds the keys to 251 public libraries across the state of Ohio.

Don't let him close them.

Don't let him cut their hours. Don't let him cut their materials.

We have only six days to stop him. A budget decision by the state legislature is due by June 30...

Unbelievable. Im sure theres a million other places that Gov. Strickland could cut before slashing the public libraries budget.

so call his office and let him know.  :)  i'm pretty sure he wants to get re-elected, and if enough voters let them know of their displeasure he may have a change of opinion.

Ive sent him an email on a couple of issues already, ill try to find time today or tomorrow to write another one up about the libraries.

One thing I don't get about libraries is their lending out movies and even video games to patrons.  I don't see any real social benefit to these transactions.

It allows them to retain customers and charge fees when they are not returned on time.  Most have a 2 day rental with one renewal.  After that its like $2 a day.  So really they are used as a revenue source.

i get my movies at the library all the time.  it's a great service, and i pay for it out of every paycheck.
