Posted May 18, 200916 yr Over the past several years, I've been surveying the various vintage postcards of Hamilton to acquire the best cityscape views. I thought I would share a few below. The traditional "greetings from" postcard adopted for Hamilton with insets of prominent buildings. Downtown viewed from the west bank of the Great Miami; this view appears very similar today. High Street viewed from the east end of downtown; much has changed since. High Street viewed from the west end of downtown in early evening; the left streetscape has significantly changed. The Butler County Courthouse as it appears after the 1912 fire and 1926 dome replacement. The Butler County Soldiers', Sailors', and Pioneers' Monument The Anthony Wayne Hotel Hamilton's Art Deco WPA-constructed Municipal Building The second downtown United States Post Office The Rentschler Building which endures today as the Key Bank Building. Hamilton Central YMCA Hamilton YWCA The Lane Public Library between the 1910's and 1998 when the copula was removed. The oldest building to Mercy Hospital, demolished in the early 1980's. The original Fort Hamilton Hospital building, demolished in the 1980's as well. Wilson Junior High School Hamilton Senior High School, demolished in 1982. The clubhouse at Potters Park Municipal Golf Course, one of two city-operated courses. Hamilton's North Water Production Plant

May 18, 200916 yr Cool. I wanted to go to Dayton Lane's May Promanade yesterday but didn't have time.
May 26, 200916 yr It's amazing that some of these scenes had their own postcards, but I guess it makes more sense when you consider the time they were produced. High Street sure has changed a lot, especially on the northern side (for the worse), but it's great that many of the beauties are still there. Absolutely love the Rentschler Building...probably my favorite building in downtown Hamilton aside from the courthouse.
June 8, 200916 yr I think the old picture post cards are much more interesting than the ones one often finds now. Many of the old ones let a building stand alone, and show off its design in a way similar to the way an architect might have rendered it. Today's photo post cards are often a mish-mash of stuff, and seldom feature any particular building. I guess that coincides with an apparent general lack of interest in eye-pleasing building forms, especially in many small and mid-sized cities. That's especially evident in school architecture; look at the school buildings thrown together now like a mix-and-match kit, compared with some of those beauties in the post card images.
