That area looks like the sort of place one might go to die; after a few days there, you'd have done your penance and you'd be glad to be dead!

 

I wonder if the folks on the bench at the railroad depot are waiting for the Empire Builder, or they're just hanging out for lack of anything else to do.

at first i thought well except for the western scrub from a distance this looks exactly like tontogany in nw ohio. this is the kind of view i always had riding my bike there from bg.

Yeah, it's not quite Massachusetts or Denver. I have managed to fine some interesting geographic features like Ft. Peck Dam and the occasional mini canyon or badlands.

 

You gotta go into the bar/casinos to see the people.

This place reminds me of something you'd see in Mississippi.

I read that in these small, remote Montana towns that the culture has remained the same as it was many decades ago. It looks that way,at least.

People don't realize that a lot of Montana looks like this. It's not all mountains and bucolic small towns for ex-Californians.

 

Best bet is to stick to Helena (quite underrated), Missoula, Bozeman (minus the sprawl), and Billings (though overrated) for the decent small cities in Montana. Butte is cool too if only because it's such an impressive boom town gone bust and still has the buildings to show for it.

 

Avoid Great Falls at all costs.

 

 

What's so overrated about Billings?  I thought it was quite nice.

Wow, this place looks pretty intense. A lot of these shots would be amazing with an 8x10 camera. If they have the internet in heaven, no doubt Walker Evens is wishing he could come down on a cloud and photograph this place. 

I'd be bored out of my mind living in that town... wow.

A pretty cute and compact community... and a lot of great scenery. That's really it.
