Posted May 25, 200916 yr Hey all, So I'm a few days away from signing a lease at this apartment complex and was wondering if anyone on here lives in these specific apartments (or more generally in any of the E. 4th Street apartments). Just looking to get some feedback on: -Noise/activity levels on weeknights/weekend nights -Apartment management -Transients around E.4th Street -Safety in the area -Public transportation around the apartments -Downtown resident discounts -Utility costs for these apartments (it concerns me the heating vents are ceiling level- the fact that heat rises means inefficient heating of the apartment which equals $$$ electric bills). -Anything else you can input on living in this building/E. 4th Street Thanks! P.S. I've perused the E. 4th Street Development Thread already and didn't find the answers I needed.

May 26, 200916 yr Man, I can't believe no one can help her out. E. 4th is a UO favorite street/neighborhood! Where are the forumers who live on the street? Or at least know a lot about it??

Haha I was wondering the same thing. It was starting to get lonely in here. Thanks for the responses MyTwoSense and Murray Hill! ANY feedback would be helpful- signing this lease on Friday and I need to rest assured knowing I'm making the right choice.
May 26, 200916 yr I dont live on E 4th but someone i work with has lived on the street for the past 4 years and absolutely loves it! There's always action on the street and is pretty centrally located, defo someplace i want to live once/if i get a solid paying job
May 26, 200916 yr I've lived on East 4th for going on 4 years. Here are my thoughts on you questions: -noise- yup, it is an entertainment district. It might be a lot better if you're on the backside of the building, not overlooking East 4th itself or god forbid, the valle stand. -management- pretty good, maintenance is pretty good, too. Biggest problems are in the garages- leaks and such. -transients- yup they're there, they're annoying, but not dangerous. Just give them a simple, firm, but polite "no" when they ask for change and they'll usually leave you alone immediately. -safety- I feel fairly safe, but I wouldn't recommend walking around late at night by yourself alone off of East 4th itself. Muggings have happened, primarily at bar closing time. They are looking for drunks (who are easy targets) and servers/bartenders getting out of work alone (who are carrying cash). -public transit- East 4th is one block from Tower City and Public Square- the rail and bus hub of the region. The Health Line BRT runs right by East 4th. It's the best location you can get for public transit. -Discounts- there is a discount card that you get as a neighborhood resident- usually 10% at the East 4th St. establishments. I'm not aware of anything beyond that. -Utilities- I usually pay $40-70 for electric (including heating/AC) a month. I've been told a ceiling fan would make the heating more efficient in winter, but I've never taken the time or effort to install one. I also use the HVAC system to generate white noise and a breeze while I sleep, which mitigates most of the noise of living in an entertainment district, but obviously hurts the electric bill.
May 26, 200916 yr I live very near to E. 4th, but not in one of the "official" E. 4th properties managed by MRN. So I'll only comment on those that apply more generally to someone living in the immediate vicinity. Noise - I live in a unit that faces back, away from East 4th, Euclid, or Prospect. This helps shield the noise quite a bit. I've never been woken up or kept awake by the commotion outside. I would expect that it would be louder if you did face Euclid or E. 4th though. Management - N/a -- although I've never heard a bad word about MRN, for what it's worth Transient - They're definitely there, but not terribly annoying. Never had a problem. Neither has my wife, as far as I know. Just keep walking. Safety - I feel safe, but keep your wits about you, especially the later at night that you're walking around and/or the farther you get from the general E. 4th vicinity. Transit - No shortage of access to transit, and I often walk to/from Tower City RTA station very early in the morning or late at night with no safety issues. Discount - N/a Utilities - N/a
May 26, 200916 yr You guys have been super helpful! I think this has definitely helped me feel better with my decision to move there. In choosing that area, I was prepared for the noise level to be of some concern, but I grew up in a big city so I'm used to going to sleep with fire trucks, police cars, and ambulances roaring outside my window at all times of the night. If I can deal with that, hopefully I can deal with the noise levels on E. 4th. As a single woman, the safety issue did concern me the most especially since I was constantly being bothered by people on the street when I was checking out the neighborhood on my first trip over there. I would like to walk to as many places as possible but don't want to be deterred just because of the transients that hang around there. I guess I'll just have to feel it out on my own and gauge my level of comfort. Again, I did grow up in a big city with transients being everywhere but at the same time, there was more pedestrian traffic so the chances of a homeless person bothering you were slim to none. It's a little different in Cleveland from what I can tell. Lastly, the utilities cost is great news X! I was expecting to be spending well over $150 because of the ceiling heating vent issue. But knowing the bills are that low and can be lower with the use of a ceiling fan is good news- I have to look into that. Thanks again all! If anyone else has any input, it's greatly appreciated!
May 27, 200916 yr for what it is worth, transients probably sensed you were unfamiliar with the area and targeted you. I am female and have noticed that in both Cleveland and other cities. If I am the least bit off my game, they approach. I have gotten pretty familiar with Cleveland so I rarely have issues anymore in the places I frequent. Still I can understand it being worrisome. What I think no one has mentioned is the downtown improvement guys will escort you for free. Their official name is escaping me right now.
May 27, 200916 yr It's called the Kenneth James Prendergast escort service. You did say single woman, right?? :-D "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

May 27, 200916 yr Remember lindarose, a simple, firm, but polite "no" almost always works. Of course, for this one you may need to back it up with mace. The escort is available from the Downtown Cleveland Alliance. They have a cleaning crew, and a group of "safety ambassadors" who can escort people late at night. The also patrol Downtown, give directions and information, and try to intervene or at least notify police of things like aggressive panhandling. The number to call is 216.621.6000. http://www.downtownclevelandalliance.com/
May 27, 200916 yr I'm from NYC and yeah I definitely agree about looking like an easy target to panhandlers- I unfortunately am not familiar yet with the downtown area and I ended up letting that show during my last visit arrgh. Walking around NYC, I have my wits about me a lot more to the point of looking aggressive so I come off as someone troublemakers wouldn't want to mess with. That sense of security obviously comes with familiarity with the location. I think once I become more familiar with everything in Cleveland, I won't look like such a "newbie". I'm definitely keeping the escort number in my phone- I think that's a great service and didn't think something like that would exist outside of college campuses. If that doesn't work, it's good to know I have the KJP service as backup :) Thanks for input guys and gals.

May 27, 200916 yr If that doesn't work, it's good to know I have the KJP service as backup :) And no mace is required despite what Mr. X (aka 'the smart ass') says. If the 84 in your forum name represents your birth year, you are likely too young for this 41-year-old anyway. :) If it represents your actual age, then I am too young for you! But welcome to Cleveland. Hope you find a nice new home soon. Just remember you don't have to hit the residential jackpot right away. At first, find a place you have to live, then look for places you want to live in. Always keep your eyes open for neighborhoods you will fall in love with, then look for the best apartments in those neighborhoods. But once you find a foothold here, then you can take some time to look more carefully. Enjoy! May 27, 200916 yr having been to numerous street safety presentations put on by police, none recommended mace or pepper spray. It may very well come back on you hampering your escape, or further enrage someone who might be drugged up and immune to it anyway. Like a weapon, it is more effective in the hands of an expert.
May 27, 200916 yr Thanks for the safety input guys. Yeah, I may be from "da bronx" but I am, in no way, a "tough guy" haha. I mean, I'm street smart, but if it came down to physical contact I wouldn't know what to do with myself. I would never carry mace/pepper spray/gun/knife etc. As peabody mentioned, those things can easily be used against you and I wouldn't take the chance. Hopefully a swift kick to the groin should do the trick ;) Other than that, I'm excited for the move! I can't wait to check out C-town. Mayday's pics alone leave me anxious to see the town firsthand. I plan on exploring enough to figure out where I want to live eventually, though if downtown works out, I may just stay there permanently. Thanks again for the comments.

Oh heavens no, I'm straight out of the south bronx (by tremont, jerome, fordham, etc), but I've evolved out of the tough girl mentality after college/ law school. In other words, I've grown softer- but I still retain what I've learned. I just don't want to have to put it to any use which is why safety is of the utmost importance.

November 22, 201311 yr This information was helpful, but it's pretty dated, and I'd love to hear what people think about the Euclid Block Apartments now. I'm a 24 year-old single male, and I'll be working downtown. I'm set on living on East 4th, and this building seems great. I would love to have a view of East 4th from my unit, but I'm concerned about noise. Any information about this building or other buildings on East 4th would be greatly appreciated . Thanks!
November 22, 201311 yr I lived in the Euclid Block for a year and while it's a bit loud on both the E4th and Euclid Ave sides, that's just the reality of city living. I think they're the newest units on E4th so they're decent. Wood floors, big windows. I enjoyed the time there.
December 3, 201311 yr I had a friend who lived on East 4th but their windows were not overlooking East 4th St or Euclid. She never had any issues with noise and loved living in that neighborhood. Sorry I can't be of more help but the bars in that area don't seem to get too crazy after late dinner time. I would guess the loudest it gets around there is after sporting events/concerts or in the nice weather months when there is patio dining (which probably ends by 11pm at the absolute latest).

December 9, 201311 yr Like the other people mentioned, the outside noise is a non-issue if the apartment faces the interior alleys between buildings. The outward facing units, it does get loud at times when bars let out. Many of the restaurants close early so the drunk yelling is closer to midnight than 2:00am. The Healthline buses are noticeable but very easy to tune out after a couple weeks. The noise reminds me I'm in a city, so it doesn't bother me. You won't hear the buses or people when sleeping since the bedrooms are away from exterior walls. The apartments that front East 4th or Euclid have interior bedrooms without real windows. Quiet as can be. Fair warning though, the bowling alley is loud on the second floor directly above the lanes. I live on the 4th (top) floor and cannot hear the crashing pins, but people on the second floor aren't so lucky. The management and maintenance staff is pretty good. No problems there. edit: Quick edit. I have not personally heard the bowling alley from the second floor. My comment was second-hand from a girl that literally just moved in above the lanes. She might have been overly sensitive or hadn't had a chance to "tune it out". I didn't mean to give the impression it was a show-stopper.
