I kinda like how Governor Kaisch sounds

The voting gap is widening -- not closing.

Ya...Looks like the gap is insurmountable at this point.  Strickland would have to win the remaining democratic counties by a landslide to pull even

Classic

It's not the first time he's spelled it that way, so I don't think it was a typo.  Of course, I don't expect much from Kasich's fan base.  Ohio is reinforcing its reputation tonight.

You have to ask? Then there is your answer.. DUH.

Should have a final call very soon - Cuyahoga and Lucas now reporting 100% of precincts on their websites:

Kasich Beats Strickland in Ohio Governor's Race

GOP's Kasich gives his party an important prize as he beats Democrat Strickland for governor

a sad night indeed.

I heard Democrats filed a lawsuit today. It looks like there's going to be a legal challenge. Counties are having problems with ballots. I know people who never got their absentee ballots in the mail.

I do support a lot of Republicans but this sudden extreme shift to the right is a little scary. I don't think a lot of Appalachians understand what they've gotten themselves into. They would be much better off having the guy who supported them and who Kasich made fun of for growing up "in a Chicken Shack on Duck Run". What exactly is the breakdown by county? I want to see the level of hypocrisy and ignorance we're dealing with.

Nevermnd...My own idiot error looking at the interactive map.

Boo, Kasich, boo.

Just another confirmation the only place in Ohio to visit is the Cleveland area.....what a joke, shame, and a sham.

i suggest that every democrat in ohio, move apartments, houses, whatever. find a new place in a different congressional district in the coming year. just to throw off the obvious redistricting fiascoes that will be occurring in columbus...

I had this really vivid nightmare a week ago. Me and a bunch of others were standing in this long line to be beheaded. One by one, people in front would approach the guillotine and blood would splatter everywhere. None of us were really scared at all; we came to terms with it - it was a system, what could we do? There was no way to escape. I just remember thinking, "God, this line is so long! It's like the DMV!" We all couldn't wait to just get the inevitable horror over-with. It was out of our control anyway.

Now I know what my dream meant!

We are so fucked!

Life as we know it will only get worse.

You know... this was the only race I REALLY TRULY cared about (along with HamCo commish). In most cases in races I could vote in, the election could either way and it wouldn't be too bad. Strickland really did a lot of good work to clean up the State House, fix many of the budget problems, and, of course, push for the 3-C passenger rail system. Now we have John Kasich, who really didn't have any NEW ideas. The thrust of his platform was to stop the train. While I am not in a position to make a knee-jerk move out of state, it will certainly be part of my considerations for Grad School and my postgrad life.

How can I be a planner (with a passion for transportation issues) in a state that can't seem to get it together on transportation issues??

We are fucked indeed.

I hope you folks realize that there is this whole "country" outside of Ohio that ALSO voted for Republican governors as well (Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Connecticut, Maine, Iowa, New Mexico, possibly Illinois, Minnesota, and "liberal" Oregon as we speak) so Ohio would actually be an anomaly to have voted for a Democratic governor.  So please cut the sh!t with this type of nonsense:

Same here. Teddy and Jimmy deserved better.

Oh, and I was really pulling for Prop 19 as well.

Maybe it's time to consider your view should be revisited and listen to what people with opposing views think rather than this doom and gloom attitude.  I mean, most of you just spent 2 years slamming "the party of no" and now you're acting just like them.  Strickland wasn't getting the job done.    If Kasich doesn't get the job done either, he'll be gone too.

I mean, most of you just spent 2 years slamming "the party of no" and now you're acting just like them.

How so?  Lamenting a loss and obstructing official business are two totally different things.

Ohio is now completely under GOP control.  The Governor, AG, Supreme Court, both sections of the State House.  If we are not a booming state in 4 years, both in terms of business and population, I suppose they will face the wrath of our schizophrenic swing state.

^^ Maybe you should examine the real factors behind the election, rather than putting out the platitude that "Strickland wasn't getting the job done."

Lots of people voted for Republican governors this year based on national issues out of the governors' control. In such a close race, you must admit there's a good possibility this was the determining factor, and out of Strickland's control.

I agree with the general point that whining does no good, and acceptance is the way to go. But for chrissakes let people vent for a day or two.

Last night was a great night to be from Ohio

^But not a great night for those of us who have stuck around IN Ohio.

Sometimes folks in this thread blur the lines between hilarity and insanity.  I'll pick the former for forumers.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

As it applies to THIS site and the issues we generally find important to us as a group.... I am worried about the voting breakdown.  Basically, the rural areas of Central and Western Ohio won this race for Kasich.  Strickland won Cuyahoga, Franklin, Lucas, Summit and Mahoning (mostly by wide numbers) and came unexpectedly close in Hamilton.  Kasich now knows (if he ever didn't) where his voting base is and it is not in the urban centers.

I think Kasich is going to do some good things, and on-balance the benefits may outweigh the costs, but I highly doubt his agenda as Governor is going to come close to satisying UO'ers on a whole.

I'll simply note that it is unfortunate that no Dems were able to break through at the state level. Somebody has to be around to keep folks honest. I truly deeply hope that the GOP will have a come to Casey Jones moment on passenger rail and realize that it would be great for the state.

That is not a fair assessment of what UO forum members were saying.

Kasich should do pretty well. When the economic meltdown started, financial experts predicted it would run it's course in a few years. Dems got elected into the free fall & now Republicans will be in office when it clears up. Senators & Governors, with longer terms, will do much better than Congressmen.

I just think that Strickland was very competent given the climate and he got the bum end of the knee jerk voter reaction much like Mike Dewine Sr did in 2008.

Strickland failed to deliver.  After Taft, we were going to have a Democratic revolution.  School funding was going to get fixed, mass transportation was going to be adequately funded, ODOT was going to be put on a short leash, etc. etc.  None of that happened, and don't make excuses as to why Strickland couldn't do those things, he promised he would.  Kasich may be worse but you just can't make a bunch of pie in the sky campaign promises that you have no hope of achieving and then think people won't take out their vengeance on you four years later.

Ask "read my lips no new taxes" Bush senior (or Obama for that matter).

After Taft, we were going to have a Democratic revolution.

Here is the newsflash though, there is not going to be a revolution ever.  There is no way in 4 years anybody could get everything done they want to do and make apocolyptic changes to a huge entity like a state government, especially in a horrible economic climate.  Make a laundry list of goals for yourself to accomplish in 4 years, and at the end tally up if you were able to accomplish them all.  Make sure to put lofty goals like, "I have -$10 in the bank now, and I want to have $1,000,000 in four years.

We have become a country of attention deficit, schizophrenic, instant gratification idiots.  No party will EVER get anything done as long as people only vote from news pundit talking points, and sound bites.  Until people examine the issues and facts, and vote more thoughtfully we will be stuck in this back and forth war of the parties and nothing will change.  Not for Ohio, or the US.

Problem is Stricland didn't get any of it done.  He over promised and under delivered.  That is death in politics, business, relationships, anything really.  He was Taft Light.

Honestly, I don't think this election will have too big of an effect on the state.  I voted democratic for essentially the whole ticket, and I'm definitely bummed that Stricland lost, but I can't really think of too many great things he did for the state.  That's not to say that I think he did a bad job, I just think that the Governor doesn't have the power to really do too much in a highly urbanized state like Ohio.  Much more of the power comes from local governments.  That's why the race I'm most saddened about is the Hamilton County Commissioner race.

Probably "Every Democrat" should have voted, no? Turnout was lower than 50% across the state and even lower in urban areas

http://vote.sos.state.oh.us/pls/enrpublic/f?p=130:11:0

All urban centers were below 50%, and suburban counties trended higher

^

Yet, if you look at the collar county vote you can still see a regional differnece.

Adding up these counties for Daytonnati:

Greene

Warren

Butler

Clermont

...Kasich won 67.2% of the Kasich/Strickland total (not counting minor party candidates)

Adding these NE Ohio collar county votes:

Lake

Geauga

Portage

Medina

Kasich won 57% of the sum total of the vote.

This is a 10.2% difference between the two suburban regions, showing, even in a good GOP year, that there is still more Democratic support in NE Ohio.

Strickland lost Hamilton and Montgomery Counties, the core counties of Daytonatti.  But he did win Cuyahoga and Summit, and also Lorain County, which could be suburban, but is also old factory town (Lorain/Elyria)

Just another confirmation the only place in Ohio to visit is the Cleveland area.....what a joke, shame, and a sham.

Well, I liked my visit up there.  You can tell there is a more left/liberal (or at least Democratic) political culture in that region.

^^^Geauga is normally uber-conservative.  They don't call it "God's Country" for nothing.  Medina, as it grows, will probably mirror the political affiliations of the outer-ring westside suburbs which it borders and which are certainly conservative but not fire engine red.  Lake is a bit of a surprise, but there are several reasons why this election cycle, that particular county voted against the incumbents, albeit not by a wide margin.

Looks like things are back to normal in Ohio.

"Normal" being that the Democratic Donkey is back in his stable and the GOP is back running the show...both the state legislature and the governors mansion.  I guess the courts, too.

I think during my 20 some years living here, there was a Democratic governor when I first moved here in 1988/1989 (Celeste?), then the Republicans ran things until Strickland took over after the problems with Taft.  That was..when....2006 or 2007?  So now its back to the usual with the GOP in control.

The most notable wins of the night for Strickland were probably Wood and Ottawa Counties outside Toledo. Both are historically swing counties, and I don't think anyone was expecting Strickland to hold them on a night with such strong winds blowing towards Republicans.

Agree!

The Toledo region is doing suprisingly good for the Democrats.  Sounds like my kind of town.

Time for a road trip to Maumee Dearest  (a buddy who is a BGSU alum wants to return to the site of student debauchery, so maybe Bowling Green plus Toledo).

Was wondering about Bowling Greene (Wood County?)....could that gay rights ordnance helped turnout for Strickland?

Just a reminder that Idiocracy isn't some far off reality: we've been living it. That's what happens when the philistinism of the majority overrules the intellectualism of the minority.

Tell me something new. Hell, why do you think the illuminati was formed?

Yes I'm bitter! I wanted passenger trains!

It will soon be time for Mr. Rough and tough Kasich to take a chainsaw to social spending in Ohio.  The statehouse 'pubs always talk about Medicaid.  Let's watch for if Kasich's saw jams when he hits the nursing home lobby, who sucks Ohio's wealth away while shocked family members of the disabled look on.

KJP will get us passenger trains, damnit!  KEEP THE HOPE ALIVE!  I still believe in Muffy from Today's Special, thankyouverymuch.

Local governments are powerful, but they rely significantly on state funding. Strickland was for protecting the Local Government Fund, a huge source of revenue for cities. Kasich could very easily bargin this away in the budget process. Kasich is also more likely to cut funding to the university system, public schools, and libraries significantly deeper than Strickland. He may also send $400 million in federal money to another state.

He will:

Kasich also reiterated his commitment to get more money into Ohio classrooms by reducing spending on administrative functions. He also said he will stick by his campaign promise to stop the 3C passenger rail project from Cleveland to Cincinnati.

“That train is dead,” Kasich said. “We’re not going to have it.”

Presidential Nominee Palin would be fun... and hopefully scandalous. I'd love her to win the primaries but lose the election. We're flirting with death, dreaming of a scenario like that though. She could actually win in this climate!
