World Cup in Cincinnati?

http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20090602/SPT/906030335/1055/NEWS/World+Cup+in+Cincinnati?

Hamilton County wants to bring the world's largest sporting event to downtown Cincinnati.  Paul Brown Stadium could host up to six World Cup soccer matches in nine or 13 years, if a preliminary bid being organized by Hamilton County Commissioner David Pepper bears fruit.  Cincinnati is among 58 cities to express a tentative interest in hosting games if the United States is chosen by FIFA, soccer's international governing body, according to the USA Bid Committee.

I love it.

I will defo be making a trip to cincinnati if cleveland doesnt get any matches for the world cup

Wonder how they would "adjust" PBS?

Wonder how they would "adjust" PBS?

If its too tight on the sidelines, you might see the substitutes and managers sitting in the stands like you see in english stadiums. This is the world cup, youre not gonna see smaller pitches due to there not being enough room, theyll just simply go to a bigger stadium that can have a FIFA sized pitch.

You would probably have to put grass over the fieldturf as well. I know FIFA has approved some fieldturf for competitions but i dont see them going for it in the world cup.

I think the U.S. will for sure get either the 2018 or the 2022 world cup, but id put my money on 2022 being the year we see it return to the states.

Anywhere you can find a list of the other 57 cities?  Cleveland has to be one.  Boy, that would be absolutely incredible.  US will get either 2018 or 2022.  Heck, they are even saying that if the crime is so bad in South Africa, that may get moved next summer.  I will be at the World Cup qualifier Saturday night in Chicago...should be a good game.

I saw a list a while back at i think ESPN.com and Cleveland was for sure on it. Cleveland Browns Stadium is a great place for football. I watched the scum (celtic) vs boca juniors 4 years ago and it was amazing. I know a few of the american football stadiums wouldnt be able to fit a proper sized pitch in the stadium, which automatically is a plus for cleveland (and it sounds like for cincinnati as well). I could see a few of the early round matches being played in cleveland, but the later stages will defo be at a larger market city like new york or southern california.

^No Doubt.  Any games are amazing though.  HAving tens of thousands of people come to your city from all over the world to party, eat and spend money would be an incredible thing.

I just want to be able to see World Cup soccer.  I would happily go to Cleveland, Columbus, Chicago, Indy or Detroit to make that happen.

By way of high speed trains maybe?  8-)

Preferably yes.

I saw a friendly a while back, 2-3 years, at cleveland browns stadium.  It was a really great experiance.  we had dawg puond seats about 7 rows back and the goal is right on top of you.  Almost got dinged by a shot that went wide.

USA Bid Committee Contacts 70 Venues Across United States as Bid Process Continues For 2018 or 2022 FIFA World Cup

More Than 50 Metropolitan Markets in Consideration to be Host Cities

NEW YORK (April 8, 2009) – The USA Bid Committee mailed letters last week to public officials and stadium operators in metropolitan markets across the United States in an initial and important step toward preparing a formal bid to play host to the FIFA World Cup in 2018 or 2022. In all, 70 stadiums in more than 50 metropolitan markets are in consideration, ranging in market size from New York City, where the new Meadowlands Stadium will open in 2010 in nearby East Rutherford, N.J., to college town markets such as Lincoln, Neb., and Fayetteville, Ark. The outreach by U.S. Soccer and the USA Bid Committee truly represents a national campaign to welcome the return of the world’s most popular sporting event to the United States, with the comprehensive mix of metro markets and world class venues representing a chief asset of the U.S. bid.

Ohio Stadium, home to the Buckeyes, is among the venues under consideration.

Three Ohio Cities Being Considered to Host FIFA World Cup

Submitted by Leader Staff on June 17, 2009 - 11:33am.

37 American cities have made the cut and will bid to host World Cup soccer matches in either 2018 or 2022. Included on that list are three major Ohio cities - Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati.  The United States' application is due to FIFA in May 2010. A 24-member executive committee will study the bids and conduct site visits. They will also name the two host nations for the 2018 and 2022 tournaments in December 2010, ending a 21-month bid and review process.  In addition to the 37 candidate host cities, the committee also released a list of 45 stadiums associated with each city. In Cleveland, the Cleveland Browns Stadium is being considered, while Ohio Stadium and Paul Brown Stadium are being considered respectively in Columbus and Cincinnati.

This would be great for any Ohio city to host a World Cup match if the USA gets it in either 2018 or 2022!

So should we change the thread name to World Cup in Ohio? or World Cup 2018/2022 since we're now talking about Cinci, Cleveland, and Columbus hosting the tournament?

Agreed.

USA just beat Spain 2 - 0 in the Confederations Cup semi final. Spain is/was the number one ranked team in the world. USA plays the winner of Brazil/South Africa Sunday at 2:00pm

USA opened a 2-0 lead at halftime against Brazil in the Confederations Cup final yesterday.  Only to see mighty Brazil recover to score three goals in the second half to notch a 3-2 win.  The USA team played well, but Brazil is still Brazil.  :-(

The U.S. came out in the second half and hoped to defend, defend, defend and try to hold onto the lead instead of continuing with the attacking style we saw in the first half. As soon as Brazil scored in the 46th minute i knew there were more goals coming, it was just a matter of when. Overall it was a good tournament for the U.S. and to come away with second place medals in a tournament with Brazil, Spain, Italy, and Egypt is pretty damn impressive and they have nothing to be ashamed of. Focus now is on Mexico in August and finishing up World Cup qualifying strong and heading to South Africa 2010 strong.

The amount of coverage ESPN gave to the U.S. after the victory over Spain and the days leading up to and after the Brazil game was awesome! I dont ever remember soccer being a lead story on Sportscenter. I know the die hard football meatheads that work in the office have been talking about the little global sport of soccer a lot thursday, friday, and this morning.

The best analogy I heard was that it was like watching an early round game in the NCAA men's basketball tourney, when a low seed has that big lead at the half and you just know it can't hold especially when the opened the second half with the goal.

From Hamilton County Commissioner David Pepper's newsletter (first) and his blog (second)

Pepperspectives:  Raising Our Game, Telling Our Story

"Build it, and they will come" is that famous movie line.

"Build it, market the heck out of it, and they will come" is the story of Cincinnati and Hamilton County tourism in recent years.

In the past eight years, we have greatly upped our game when it comes to assets in our community.  A revitalized Fountain Square.  A competitive and expanded convention center.  Continued strength in terms of arts and cultural institutions.  And progress on the Banks--finally--that will see some groundbreakings next year.

But we made another decision as well.  We (the private and public sector) made a bet.  Given a very low profile beyond our own region, we bet that if we proactively and collectively marketed all these assets, we'd see better results when it comes to visitors and economic activity.  So taking restricted hotel tax revenues, we made a strategic investment to market ourselves near and far--for conventions and for weekend tourists.  (Some criticized this decision, but we knew our story wasn't getting out, and needed to).

Well, the investment is paying off handsomely.  Even in last year's dismal economy, visits and revenue from tourism were at a record high, one of the strongest parts of our economy.  And this month showed just how much we've raised our game.

We landed the World Choir Games for 2012, the largest international event in our city, beating out 50 cities.  We hosted the MLB Civil Rights Game, a historic weekend that received great national fanfare.  And we kicked off the new Ohio Ambassador Program, which will deputize Ohioans and Cincinnatians to serve as their own personal marketers for all our strengths.

[glow=yellow,2,300]Our next goal is to compete to land some World Cup soccer games here in 2018.  And with the World Choir Games locked in and a new riverfront in the making, we just improved our resume many times over.[/glow]

It's a competitive world out there. If we don't define ourself and tell our story to the world, someone else will, or there will be no story at all.

But as we showed this month, if we compete smartly and strategically, and confidentily tell our story, we can win.

World Cup in Cincinnati? Worth Going For

http://cincypeptalk.blogspot.com/2009/06/world-cup-in-cincinnati-worth-going-for.html

26 billion viewers across the globe. Four to six games--all sold out. Three weeks of hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the county and the world. A huge economic impact.

That could all take place in Cincinnati/Hamilton County in 2018 if we get the job done.

Hamilton County submitted our initial interest in being one of the sites for soccer's World Cup with the USA Bid Committee. We will put together a working committee to more intensely assess and pursue the opportunity, and the Bengals, Convention & Visitors Bureau, and City of Cincinnati have already agreed to take part.

It's a long time from now, and there will definitely be a competition to get there--but it's also a huge opportunity. More to come.

26 billion viewers?  Arent there 7 billion people on earth?

Any news on if Cleveland is putting a bid together and how far along it is? This is the single most watched/popular sporting event in the world and Cleveland MUST at least make some kind of an attempt to land a few matches.

cards-

Yes the guy who is in charge of the greater cleveland sports commission that brought this international soccer tourney here this weekend and brought the womens final four here said on an interview with Bob Frantz the other day that they will be pushing for it.

Great to hear, thanks!

26 billion viewers?  Arent there 7 billion people on earth?

26 billion is probably the cumlative number of viewers for all the World Cup matches.  According to the 2010 World Cup South Africa schedule there will be 64 total matches played.

Wow I hope that this actually happens!  I got tickets for the July 2 match in Johannesburg and I'd love to travel (by train might I add) to a midwest city to take in a match or two.

Lastly, boo cards I am a huge Celtic fan!!

With 4 games left we need to hang onto one of the top three spots in order advance...Odds are good.

The number all the way to the right is the most important.

Hm, what are the chances the US will make it to South Africa now, after losing 2-1?

Very good.  We are in second and don't have many difficult games left.  I have no doubt we'll qualify, losing to Mexico in a tough game like we did today is nothing to be ashamed about.  We barely missed a header right in front of the goal around the 70th minute that would have put up us 2-1 and completely changed the game's dynamic from there on.

Side Note: You were able to stream the game live on Telemundo's website, but I'm getting tired of watching these games online.  wtf

i watched it at murphy's (mmm free popcorn, pretzels and hotdogs), the us didn't look good but hung around until late

I liked our aggressiveness.  That kind of attitude is very important if you want to make a run at the World Cup.

I think were still in good position to make the world cup, there are no easy games when it comes in international matches but i dont see the US being overmatched in any of them. They need to win there matches and we'll be set, which shouldnt be too hard to do. I wasnt expecting a win today in Mexico, but wish they would have tried to attack more in the second half instead of trying to desperately hang onto the 1 point.

It is important to remember that U.S. basically assumes a loss to Mexico at Azteca and the Mexicans assume a loss in Columbus in the middle of winter.

Cleveland remains a contender to host World Cup soccer in 2018 and 2022

by Starting Blocks, The Plain Dealer

Thursday August 20, 2009, 12:55 PM

An initial list of 70 stadiums was submitted. Prior to today, 45 sites remained under consideration, but 13 were dropped, including Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati and Ohio Stadium in Columbus. Other planned venues could be added to the list.

U.S. organizers must submit their bid book to FIFA by May, and FIFA's executive committee plans to select the 2018 and 2022 hosts in December, 2010. FIFA asked that 12 to 18 stadiums of 40,000 capacity or higher be submitted with each bid...

^Great to see Cleveland made the cut. I still don't think the horseshoe should have been cut from the list..

The horseshoe is primarily bleacher seating.  The world cup is the worlds most premium athletic event maybe other than the olympics.  Im pretty sure they want to give everyone their seat.  If Michigan Stadium gets picked, i would be SHOCKED.
