Soccer fans follow European football clubs so it's no surprise they pick up the lingo. The only people that get bothered by the terms don't really care about soccer anyway, so big whoop if it annoys them.

Anywhoo, in the immortal words of Bill Belichick, we're onto Netherlands.

Played soccer for most of my life (I'm 40) and also worked in collegiate and pro sports. Pitch started to enter the lexicon around '04 or so. Nil-nil was something I remember being said in the 90s. But complaining about what people call something is a surefire way to show that you just dislike something for no reason. I hate auto racing. I think it's the biggest waste of time but I don't go out of my way to get on a F1 forum or social media just to complain about people liking it.

As far as the WC goes. I didn't see the US making it out of the group. The Netherlands will be a tough out especially if a couple US players are hurt. We don't have a good scoring threat so I say this is the end of the road for this year's tournament.

The competitor I meant was hockey, which has all those plus gear.

True, although most hockey gear lasts years.  So the equipment isn't as expensive as people think (outside of goalie pads) -- it's not the gear that kills you, it's the travel.

Fingers crossed that Pulisic is ok to go and we can at least make a game of it.

The general lack of elite scoring threats also bodes ill for the U.S. in any elimination-stage game that goes to penalty kicks.

The late Robert Geiser used to call soccer "that communist sport" when he was athletic director at Maple Heights.   I doubt that attitude continued when he was at Willoughby South.

On that note, I know it won't happen but the USA winning the Cup would be a diss on a level of 1980 Olympic hockey, except on the whole world not just one empire.

Mr Geiser was my social science teacher in jr.  high.  I could see him saying that with a twinkle in his eyes.

Now that I'm thinking about it, the first time I heard pitch and boot (for shoe/cleat) was in 1998. I was a junior in HS and I went to school out in the boonies of Brown County. While we were pretty good by the standards of rural Ohio, my HS soccer team always got matched up with a Cincinnati private school in the first round of the tournament. We got matched with Cincinnati Country Day or CHCA (I can't remember), but their coach was English and used those terms. He was also pretty complimentary of me.

I wish I had lived closer to the city because we didn't have a ton of opportunities for club sports where I lived and I was pretty good at soccer.

Oh , it was said exactly like that.   But the reason was more mundane, during that era we had enough trouble filling the football team.   We stunk, the basketball and wrestling teams were always in conference contention and a lot of those kids didn't go out for football.  Plus there was the Mapleboro smokers club.

He's on my Facebook and passed away rather recently.   He and George Belden were golf and travelling buddies, despite being political opposites.

He had one class while he was AD, a first period world history full of senior jocks and cheerleaders.   For some reason one of my teammates and I weren't in his class but next door.   We could always hear his students busting up laughing, his impressions were legendary but would never fly now.

We had a teacher (I went to an all-boys high school) who assigned freshman to hit on the head librarian for extra credit.  The rumor was always that she used to be hot.  Somebody found a yearbook from like 1974 and those rumors were confirmed.

Odd, I've gotten them before and I sent you one just now.

I played soccer for 8 years.  I never heard the field referred to a "pitch" until well after I had stopped playing, around 2003 or so.  I remember everyone in the newsroom laughing when our resident soccer nerd insisted on calling the field the pitch in his coverage.

Did you all walk uphill in the snow both ways after that laugh?

And it’s over.

A good enough run to make the 16-team knockout round but no further.

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

This is crazy.  I'm trying to this final - the event that we are told (OVER AND OVER AGAIN) is the biggest thing in the world - and it's not on network TV.  It's 10am on a Sunday and they couldn't bump those Cheaters reruns.  So now I'm watching a live shot of a crowd outdoors somewhere in Argentina watching the game.

Screen Shot 2022-12-18 at 10.17.18 AM.png

It's on Fox 28 right now up here.

yeah fox has it everywhere.

its already over as of halftime though — unless argy collapses and france’s small grinch heart grows 3 sizes …

well, oh lo lo — mon dieu that was jumping the gun wasn’t it? 😂

a penalty, then messi gets his pocket picked vive le france its 2-2 and we have a game.

What a crazy game. It's going to extra time.

i hate this ot kicks business. its so not fair. just keep playing.

Some of these players have probably run 10 miles already after extra time. You have to end it eventually if it's still tied.

Somewhat embarrassing for England I would assume, though nothing like when the US team beat Mexico.

In the USA, it sort of reinforces one of the reasons American fans don't care for soccer.  Not only a tie, but a scoreless tie.   Even the NHL has gotten rid of ties.

The ties bother me less than the nebulous "extra time" for injuries etc.

Seriously -- if the "official" time is only kept on the referee's watch, there's no reason you can't have a wireless signal from there to the scoreboard.

nah. when i was in college at bg we won the ncaa championship in hockey, which is basically soccer on ice, in the greatest final ever where they just kept playing until somebody won. as luck would have it bg finally did in an epic 5 ot’s. everyone was dragging on and on until someone cracked and gave up the goal.

yeah thats even worse than kicks. when does the freaking match end? no one knows lol. its such a mystery and seemingly wide open to corruption.

Jake... it was on Fox 19 in Cincinnati and Fox 45 in Dayton.

"It's just fate, as usual, keeping its bargain and screwing us in the fine print..." - John Crichton

This was certainly the best World Cup Final I can remember. Messi, arguably the best player to ever do it, has the one trophy that's eluded him all these years. The comeback by France (twice) to bring it to penalties, only to see Messi's Argentina win it was an incredible storyline.

It's unfortunate that Qatar was the host, and hopefully the human rights abuses in the country are not forgotten in the years to come. Saudi Arabia is certainly FIFA's preferred host for 2030, but most people want it to be in South America. Uruguay hosted the very first World Cup in 1930, so having it in a joint bid with Uruguay, Argentine, and Chile for the Centennial is what most fans want to happen. According to the FIFA rules, Asia and North America cannot host in 2030 (you have to wait 2 cycles before you can get another tournament). But FIFA rules can always change if FIFA wants them to change.

The 2030 host will be selected in 2024.

Is Saudi Arabia not considered part of Asia for purposes of waiting 2 cycles?  For that matter, even if it weren't, why would it be considered any different than whatever Qatar is considered?  Qatar's hosting this World Cup should make it impossible for Saudi Arabia to host until 2034, if you have to take two cycles off after hosting.

Qatar is roughly the size of Connecticut.  But somehow 2026 will require the whole of North America.  Connecticut has been left out.

England should host in 2030.

This final was the best game of any sport that I've watched in a long time. It was great seeing Messi finally get a World Cup title and I can't wait to see him in Copa America and MLS in a couple of years.

I don't know why I'm even replying but usually the World Cup is spread out over the whole country (or two in the case of 2002 and three in the case of 2026). The US/CAN/MEX world cup won't require any new venues and will probably be the most well-attended and most-watched WC ever. I'm just mad that KC won out over Cincinnati to host games.

You're allowed to sub as much as you want in hockey.  Not the same as soccer.

Under current FIFA rules, no continent can host the tournament twice in 3 World Cup cycles. Since Asia hosted in 2022, they are not allowed to host in 2026 or 2030. I believe this was originally to prevent it from going to European countries every 4-8 years.

The Middle East (except Israel) is part of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), and Qatar and Saudi Arabia are both in AFC. So under current rules, Saudi Arabia is forbidden to host the 2026 or 2030 World Cup. But the influential people behind the scenes may want to change the rules to give it to Saudi Arabia in 2030. They could certainly host in 2034, and that's what they should bid on if they want it, but corruption is pretty rampant at FIFA, so a little money may exchange hands and the rules could change between now and the 2024 decision.

I just read that the final game will be played in Los Angeles at So-Fi stadium.  This is unfair and dumb because Los Angeles is hosting the Olympics just two years later.  A 7pm start in LA = 4am in much of Europe so they will probably schedule that game for midday, PDT.

I haven't seen anything about the final being set. LA or NYC makes sense because of the size of the cities and stadiums. LA hosted the final in 1994 so there's a traditional precedent.

the final was broadcast on fox around the country afaik. or it seemed like it by the ads.

Fantastic World Cup tournament. Can't wait until 2026.  I propose that we each take a pledge assuming of sound mind in 2026, that we will not debate the reasons why or why not soccer has grown in popularity in the US since the last World Cup.

Our conversation reminded me at times of the Chief Wahoo debate over the past 35 years.

At least no one here claimed to have spent time with their best friend's cousins on a Native American reservation playing soccer on a rock strewn field wearing their Chief Wahoo caps.
