Posted June 12, 200916 yr I'm an Akronite, I was curious if anyone on here had much experience with kayaking/canoeing (mostly kayak though). I know that Kent opened a launch in their area and there was a company out of one of the Cleveland Sub-burbs that ran tours. The main questions I have is how much of the Cuyahoga is navigatable? Also why is this not more publicized. We have a lot of great rivers in the state, and some very nice lakes. I live in the Portage Lakes and it is a ton of interconnected water.
June 12, 200916 yr I own a canoe and get out on rare occassions, but plan to make a few trips this summer. I live north of Cincinnati, though, so not familiar with canoeing northern Ohio. My inlaws live in the Sandusky area and talk of often canoeing on the marshes in the area. You are right. There is no good source of canoe information for all of Ohio. And canoeing is not well publicized here either. I guess it's because both Lake Erie and the Ohio River are not well suited to the activity. Both Cincinnati and Dayton have canoe clubs. Does Akron? Also, around here, the main canoeing spot is the Little Miami River. There are several canoe liveries on it where people can rent for the day. The river is well documented for canoers, and is easily found online. I typically canoe on lakes in State Parks. You can check the Ohio DNR website for parks near you. They typically have a map showing boat launches, and list canoeing as an activity if available. But they don't have much other info on the sport. Hint - Look for a lake with a limited motor size (Horse Power) or you will be competing with 110hp boaters. (I was once nearly run over by an airboat (think Florida Everglades) on a state park lake in Ohio!!!!!)
June 12, 200916 yr Here's a website with some Ohio canoeing info. None for your river, though... http://www.paddling.net/places/OH/ But I did come across this article that might help... http://news.hiram.edu/?p=206
June 12, 200916 yr The main questions I have is how much of the Cuyahoga is navigatable? I have gone a good ways down the Cuyahoga in a power boat, so I imagine you can make a good canoe trip out of it. I know the St. Ignatius crew team rows in the river all the time, and there is at least one large, regional meet there every year.
June 12, 200916 yr I think it isn't well publicized because higher-level, rapid-strewn rivers attract all the attention, though certainly not all the canoes. I would guess serious Ohio river rats head for Pennsylvania and West Virginia, both of which are full of such rivers.

June 12, 200916 yr My first post. hi. Try http://americanwhitewater.org/content/River/state-summary/state/OH/ AW lists almost all navigable streams in the country with directions/difficulty/description/pictures etc.. Becareful. Whitewater is dangerous.
June 12, 200916 yr Welcome aboard, Yaker81. Funny that a thread about canoeing and kayaking would lead to your first post onf "urban" Ohio. Anyway, great to have you here and hope you get a chance to post often on a variety of topics. What part of the state are you in, and are you an avid outdoors person?
June 12, 200916 yr Thanks. I live on the edge of Eden Park in cincy. I've been a guest for way too long and figured it was now or never. I spend about as much time as I possibly can outdoors.
June 12, 200916 yr Check out [email protected]. Naturally most of the trips are in the Cincinnati area but this group goes on trips all over the world. I am looking forward to a trip on the Muskingum River this weekend.
