Posted June 15, 200916 yr While I do a lot of Cincinnati photography, I do get out on occasion, like this time I went to Cleveland to check out their abandoned subway and ride the RTA: Thanks to all the UO members who gave me advice on the RTA and other things to do in the city, had a great time visiting Cleveland! Hopped on the RTA at Ohio City shortly after where apparently I was sitting right next UO member jpop for awhile: My trip on the RTA was my first trip on a real urban rail line. I loved it. Made me very envious of Cleveland. To check out even more photographs, some historical information and to see my adventure on the RTA check out the latest update at www.queencitydisco.com Thanks for viewing!
June 15, 200916 yr Ok Ok Ok I am very ignorant about some aspects of Cleveland...I did not know we had subway infrastructure and if so why is it not being used? Should i know the answer...
June 15, 200916 yr The "subway" is the lower deck of the Veterans Memorial Bridge, formerly Detroit-Superior High-Level Viaduct. It was built with a lower deck to carry streetcars across the Cuyahoga River, and served that purpose until the last streetcar line shut down in 1954. Streetcars descended via ramps in the streets as they approached the bridge, and then ascended ramps on the other side to continue on street track. For a short time after the end of streetcar service, there was an attempt to use the lower deck for automobile traffic. That was discontinued because drivers were crashing into the bridge's supporting columns. The Hope Memorial Bridge was built with lower-level infrastructure for future streetcar/subway use, but the lower deck was never used. The county engineer's office opens the lower deck of the Veterans Memorial Bridge to the public for self-guided tours every year on the Saturdays of Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends.
June 15, 200916 yr nice set gb. by the way that flooded tunnel is crazy, I've been on this tour a handful of times, and NEVER seen anything like that. I wonder what happend.
June 15, 200916 yr That's the underpass that goes beneath the track level to connect the eastbound and westbound platforms. I thought it had been flooded for years; I think it's just never been lighted so you could see the standing water.

June 15, 200916 yr Nice set... The "subway" goes beneath the Veterans Memorial bridge. The flooded platform is located around the back end of Stonebridge. It really is a very well thought out station, I hope one day it will be utilized again. There is another stop further south on Ohio City at the corner of W25/Detroit. You can see the old leaded glass "subway" sign in the Massimo De Milano building.
June 15, 200916 yr FYI..... Cleveland's subway story told with maps and graphics http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,2726.0.html And, re-using the subway tunnels for today.... June 16, 200916 yr Awesome job. I'm jealous of Cleveland's RTA, and so saddened by Cincinnati's abandoned system :-(
