July 15, 200915 yr Steelyard is probably your best bet as it has the most stores and is the closest. Just as an FYI - the #9 only departs from downtown on weekdays, not weekends, so getting to Severance is a little more difficult on the weekends. As I said, Steelyard is your best bet :). If you need a whole lotta stuff, you may just want to rent a City Wheels car for a few hours so you don't have to schlepp it all on the bus.
July 15, 200915 yr This is the closest one to you: Surroundings Home Decor - www.shdecor.com - 850 West Saint Clair Ave. Also, many places will deliver purchased furniture. I agree that Steelyard Commons may be your best bet that's closest to downtown. Don't forget there's also furniture stores on Payne, St. Clair and Superior avenues just east of downtown: Norton Furniture - www.nortonfurniture.com - 2106 Payne Ave (their late-night TV commercials are funny) Daniels Furniture - 2800 Superior Ave A & G Office Furniture - 2331 Superior Ave. Nine Finger Furniture Co - 1934 Saint Clair Ave If you need a car, just rent one car for the day and do lots of car-dependent stuff all at once. A friend of mine saves his car-dependent errands and rents a car once a month rather than subscribe to CityWheels. There are car rental locations downtown, plus some in the neighborhoods (there are two car rental places near the West 117th Red Line station -- Enterprise at West 117th & Franklin, Hertz on Madison just west of West 117th). And, of course, there's the airport for the greatest selection. Take the Red Line to the airport and catch the free rental car shuttle bus from outside the baggage claim on the lower level. July 15, 200915 yr Thanks everyone. I had a chance today to walk around and see the sights but something immediately came to mind: Where do I go to purchase furnishings in the downtown area? For example, computer desks, lamps, shower curtains, etc... There is a locally/owned operated furniture store on W. 25th in Ohio City, a large Futon Factory Warehouse on St. Clair is it?...the furniture store in Tower City as someone mentioned...and those other non-local places...(being the independent/ locally owned advocate I am)...AND, isn't there a new furniture store opening up on Euclid near 4th in the glass parking garage street level next to the Arcade? Office furniture? KJP..good selections!
July 16, 200915 yr I had a chance to ride the bus (#81) today, and it wasn't too bad. Are most bus rides similar? Will the #1 bus be similar?
July 16, 200915 yr AND, isn't there a new furniture store opening up on Euclid near 4th in the glass parking garage street level next to the Arcade? Office furniture? KJP..good selections! Yes, I forgot about the opening at 515 Euclid Avenue. Good memory. And I forgot about the Futon store (see http://www.4futons.com/index.html). It's actually at 2400 Superior (that's Superior at East 24th area), near two other furniture stores on Superior just east of downtown. I had a chance to ride the bus (#81) today, and it wasn't too bad. Are most bus rides similar? Will the #1 bus be similar? The buses themselves are very similar, but the clientele can vary greatly within the same trip on the same bus, or from one day's trip to the next on the same route. Headphones, good music and some good books are great ways to ensure consistency among trips..... July 19, 200915 yr Thanks everyone. Quick question: If I wait at the bus stop along St. Clair and Nottingham (bus #1) between 6pm and 8pm, should I be concerned? Would it be best to just take a cab?
July 20, 200915 yr Thanks everyone. Quick question: If I wait at the bus stop along St. Clair and Nottingham (bus #1) between 6pm and 8pm, should I be concerned? Would it be best to just take a cab? St. Clair and Nottingham is not a bad neighborhood. It's not white picket fences.... but far from what I would consider a place you don't want to stand out on the corner. Generally speaking and considering your route, you should worry about the areas between E 55th to about E 152nd. However, you will be fine on those streets and the areas west of 55th and east of 152nd.
July 21, 200915 yr Was yesterday your first day at work? If so, how did the commute go? "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
