November 9, 2024Nov 9 any decision on a lake shore drive redesign plan? IDOT and CDOT showed off renderings of the potential future conditions of an expanded North Jean-Baptiste Pointe DuSable Lake Shore Drive between Grand Ave and Hollywood Ave in 2023. 2024 will see the announcement of the decision of their preferred design plan for the redevelopment. Funding for the implementation of the project is still in question. https://chicago.urbanize.city/post/urbanize-wrapped-chicagos-most-anticipated-projects-2024 Redefine the Drive IDOT
November 9, 2024Nov 9 If I may... Casino: moving forward. Tribune building almost fully demolished. Lincoln Yards: stalled/dead. Halsted Pointe: moving forward. 1000M: complete. attractive building but shift to rentals disappointing. Thompson Google: moving forward. interesting seeing its rebuild in real time. 400 Lake Shore Drive: moving forward. LaSalle Street: 25/75 moving forward. Lakeshore Drive expansion: first I've heard of it. Other projects: 78: stalled other than an inaccessible road, inaccessible bike lanes, and a new pickleball court. U of I just bailed and is supposedly going to US Steel, which is doubtful. Michael Reese: stalled/dead. Soldier Field dome: dead. One Central: beyond dead. Red line expansion to 130: possible if financing is fast-tracked before inauguration. Riverline/South Bank: moving forward piecemeal. Wolf Points: complete. Old Post Office: basically complete. Union Station: stalled/dead. Tribune Tower 2: stalled/dead. Obama Library: moving forward. Lakeshore East remaining parcels (i.e. behind Blue Cross Tower): dead. New Sox Stadium: get the f out of here. Northside train "modernization": nearing complete. average trips reduced 10 seconds. what a great investment. Edited November 9, 2024Nov 9 by TBideon
November 9, 2024Nov 9 I don't see that Lake Shore Drive project happening anytime soon, as in it could be decades. I've read that project would cost $3.5B and Chicago doesn't exactly have its financial house in order. See the full set of renderings below for what IDOT and CDOT have planned
November 21, 2024Nov 21 This is cool, I'm excited to see a brick high rise being proposed. Glass has had too much of a monopoly on new high rises in recent times. https://chicago.urbanize.city/post/renderings-revealed-condo-development-1325-w-fulton

November 23, 2024Nov 23 I know most of you aren’t Columbus people in this thread, but this is 100% the type of design NRI should have brought to the arena district. It fits in with the brick, but has actual height and some great design features.
November 24, 2024Nov 24 ^ definitely agree, but to be fair wasn’t the arena district built out more than a decade ago? this is a much more modern design. i don’t think there was much if anything at all like it being built back then. it’s funny how much after something gets built it really gets stuck in its era.

Yeah, it filled in a long time ago, but they have bought more of the land and have still been building new stuff in the area. It’s still all the same 4-6 story brick look. not saying it looks bad or anything, because it is a great district, but it just needed a little extra in a few spots.

January 7Jan 7 ^ Yup! It is trippy to be in places like New Buffalo, MI and look out across the horizon and see the Willis building in the middle of the lake.
May 8May 8 Additional Details Revealed For Metropolis Pointe In BronzevilleAccording to Crain’s, the site will cost approximately $28.8 million, close to the initial $30 million estimate reported in our January coverage. This suggests the development team is nearing full funding for the acquisition, an important step toward securing financing for the entire project, which is located just north of the Bronzeville Lakefront megadevelopment.Designed by Wight & Company and Studio Barnes, updated plans show that a multi-story podium will span most of the site, divided by various courtyards and anchored by a large monument plaza near King Drive. The podium will house retail spaces, parking, a community wellness center, and a large digital infrastructure facility. This facility will support one of the two planned towers, a 215-foot-tall flex-use tower that will host the newly proposed “AI Preparedness Institute.” The institute will focus on education and workforce training in AI-related fields, Thus we can also assume part of the building will be for office space and a data center.
May 22May 22 Hey everyone - I actually moved out of Ohio and am in Chicago these days. If there's any interest from people here, I was thinking of doing some occasional posts that briefly highlight some development news happening in Chicago! There's some good Chicago development news sources, but I wish they had a good forum like UrbanOhio!Anyways, here's some recent projects and some links to their Chicago YIMBY article in the titles (which is a great source for Chicago development news!)Plan Commission Approves 1333 N. Kingsbury Street in Near North SideThis is a pretty exciting project in the Near North Side, by the former Cabrini-Green site. This 23-story 272 unit tower will be replacing a surface parking lot. This neighborhood has a ton of potential and is densifying a lot recently - it's right on the Chicago River, served by the North/Clyburn Red Line station, and a 10 minute walk to River North/Downtown. (It's the one in the foreground in this pic) Residential Mid-Rise Proposed For 227 W Chicago Avenue In River NorthThis 10-story 56-unit midrise will be located right next door to the Chicago Ave. Brown/Purple Line station on a vacant lot formerly occupied by a one-story commercial building. This will bring some much needed infill to the western half of River North, which is oddly still full of parking lots or other low density buildings - there's a BP gas station right next to the site for example!New Plans Revealed For 1200 W Carroll Avenue In Fulton MarketThe West Loop/Fulton Market continues to expand further west away from the Loop. This project will bring a 30-story 398 unit tower to what is currently a vacant former industrial site. Previously, a 14-story office building was planned for this site in 2021, but fell through.Community Development Commission Approves Funding For Next Phase Of SouthbridgeLastly, a 12-story 80-unit mixed-income building is coming to a very underdeveloped part of the South Loop as part of Chicago Housing Authority's Southbridge redevelopment project. This will be a great TOD located adjacent to the Cermak-McCormick Place Green Line station, an area which is currently full of vacant land. It's also a 5 minute walk from Chinatown and the more glamorous parts of the South Loop.
