May 13, 20205 yr Akron seeks DORA, Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area Posted May 12, 2020 By Marc Bona, cleveland.com AKRON, Ohio - The city of Akron is hoping to establish a Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area - or, DORA - near the Lock 3 / Akron Civic Theatre block of downtown Akron. Ohio lawmakers passed legislation authorizing the areas in 2015. I thought this article was more from the perspective of the 90's though, and Akron was hammered during the late 70's and 80's losing Firestone, BF Goodrich and General Tire. Instituitions like Polsky's (1978) O'Neils downtown store (1984) had closed. So me being at Thursdays in the early 90's, I can totally get what the author is saying about the despair and depressed conditions of the time and the attitudes of friends that wanted to get out. My friends going to Akron U felt it was kind of "settling" for something close to mom and dad. I went to Kent which actually felt like kinda getting away. My Dad was a Chemical Engineer at BFG for like 25 years and most of my parents friends worked for one of the rubber companies. I also think the grittiness and despair of the city is exactly what creates a unique place like Thursdays ? Edited September 12, 20204 yr by metrocity
September 12, 20204 yr ^ @metrocity That’s interesting. I graduated in ‘91 from Norton HS and I didn't have that sense of despair about Akron at all and my friends didn’t either. I think maybe Norton was a far enough away suburb with nothing at all going on, so going to Akron for record stores, shopping, etc was what we did and it made Akron seem exciting. Also, I moved to Norton in ‘88 from a small town in central PA, so Akron was like a big city to me, so I never felt the need to escape. I escaped TO Akron, lol.
September 12, 20204 yr @jeremyck01 Interesting! Actually I did know a few people similar to you, one guy I hired at The Athlete's Foot at Rolling Acres when I was in college at Kent was similar in that he was from Johnstown PA and thought Akron was great, same with this young girl from Western Ohio! Funny thing is I was born in Fairlawn, but my parents moved to Canal Fulton after the 5th kid was born and needed a bigger house. Canal Fulton is country compared to Norton, haha. We always thought of Cleveland as the Shangri La and that going to Aquillon or Nine Of Clubs was big time fancy compared to Thursdays. And of course Tower City and Beachwood Place were like the Emerald City compared to Summit Mall or Belden Village. All perpspective I guess?

May 5, 20214 yr Help (Really!) Wanted: Restaurants go from shortage of customers to shortage of employees https://www.beaconjournal.com/story/news/local/2021/04/24/help-wanted-local-restaurants-face-challenging-labor-shortage/7351071002/ Now, with many adults vaccinated for COVID, customers are flocking back to area dining rooms and outdoor restaurant patios, increasing business above even 2019 levels. But the rising demand for the dine-in experience presents restaurant owners and managers with a different challenge: They're having a difficult time recruiting servers, cooks, supervisors and other workers to handle the rising number of customers. One Stark County restaurant even closed this week, citing in part a lack of employees. To combat the worker shortage, restaurants are boosting pay, offering hiring and retention bonuses, giving out gift cards to customers who refer new workers, and recruiting high school students — all hiring efforts they haven't had to resort to in the past. ================================== Restaurants that survived the pandemic (which many were able to do, in part thanks to Paycheck Protection Program forgivable loans) look to be in for a good summer, assuming they can find the staff. I was particularly interested in the point about hiring high school students again. When I was in HS (mid-1990s), it seemed like dozens of my classmates worked in restaurants in the summer. When my cousin's kid, my oldest cousin once removed, was in HS (she's class of 2017 or 2018, IIRC), she would tell me that very few of her classmates did that. Wonder how much that trend will reverse. It's true that I've seen "Help Wanted" signs in the windows of just about every Akron restaurant I've passed lately. But also, HS students (especially if under 16) are much less likely to be COVID-vaccinated. I'm not sure that dipping into that labor pool for high-contact customer-facing roles is the best thing overall. But I'm cautiously optimistic and hope it's more good news than bad.
May 12, 20214 yr Akronym Brewing plans biergarten for downtown Akron in old Commerce Park Craig Webb Akron Beacon Journal Liz Greising, who handles marketing for the brewery, said Akronym had hoped to have the biergarten up and running by the end of this month, but transforming the space that has sat pretty much empty since its previous life as an urban community garden has been a bit more complicated than expected. First they had to iron out a lease for the space with the city. Next came the planning for the outdoor bar that will have up to four taps and be able to serve some mixed drinks. Then there's the whole matter of running electricity to the urban space and figuring out things like drainage as it is pretty muddy as of late. https://www.beaconjournal.com/story/news/2021/05/12/akronym-brewing-plans-open-beirgarten-downtown-akron/5019101001/

August 27, 20213 yr That's interesting. That little strip center at 1 N Hawkins doesn't have anything close to the space for a full-fledged BW3, not without leasing multiple storefronts and combining them, so this Go concept (this is the first I'm hearing of it) must definitely be a smaller, pizza-parlor-sized concept. I'll have to give it a try. Surprised that they're moving into that kind of space, considering the takeout model isn't conducive to beer or sports, and, well, according to them, that's 2/3 of the essentials.

Times get tough, plans go awry and the only thing to do is shut down and give the next young whippersnapper a crack at serving the public. In the case of Dante Boccuzzi Akron (DBA), those whippersnappers go by the names Joel Testa, Morgan Yagi, Dante Boccuzzi and David Sharp. https://www.beaconjournal.com/story/lifestyle/2022/06/01/dante-boccuzzi-akron-fine-dining-ohio/9486041002/

October 26, 20222 yr Square Scullery dishes delectable, creative fare in Highland Square | Local Flavor Kerry Clawson Akron Beacon Journal My husband and I had a blast at the colorful and eclectic Square Scullery in Akron. The tiny restaurant with 13 seats inside looks pretty unassuming from the outside, located behind the Wendell L. Willkie American Legion Post 19 in Highland Square. But you walk inside to a delightfully warm world where three tables and three bar seats are nestled under faux greenery and flowers hanging from the ceiling, cool lanterns with a natural woven look, kitschy art and a full-wall mural designed with multicolored triangles. https://www.beaconjournal.com/story/entertainment/dining/2022/10/26/great-surprises-in-every-part-of-scratch-meal-at-square-scullery-in-akron/69574188007/?utm_source=beaconjournal-DailyBriefing&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=daily_briefing&utm_term=list_article_thumb&utm_content=NABJ-OHIO-AKRON-NLETTER65
