Thirsty Dog Brewing Co. is staying put in Akron for now — and the owners hope for the long term, too.

Co-owner John Najeway said the company is investing “a couple million dollars” in an expansion at its location in the former Burkhardt Brewing Co. complex on Grant Street just south of the University of Akron campus.

Food notes: Twisted Olive to open in Green; Kirbie’s open house; tastings

This is one big twist on a house redo: Turn a sprawling early 1990s house into a splashy new eatery, Twisted Olive Italian American Kitchen.

The much-anticipated restaurant — a spinoff of the popular Gervasi Vineyard in Canton — opens Monday in the wood-sided former home overlooking two small lakes that until recently was part of park property owned by the city of Green.

Have not seen mention on this thread that there are a couple of other interesting downtown Akron openings.  Where a "casual Italian" restaurant flamed out next to House of Hunan's is a new copycat of Chipotle's new pizza concept, Pizzeria Locale.  It is called Pizza Fire.  Essentially the idea is hand-picked ingredients while you wait for it to cook at super high temps for a few minutes.  The owner is the same as Romeo's pizza.

Also recently opened in the same building as Thirsty Dog is Aqueduct Brewing.  Its pretty much in the back of the complex and they have a nicely conditioned space.

Yes, was going to mention that Pizza Fire. So is it a different owner than the Pronto that was in there before?

Some news:

Dave's Cosmic Subs has applied for a plan review for a space in Rosemont Commons in Fairlawn.

There is a place under plan review at Summit Mall called BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse. Appears to be like Applebee's with their own beer...yawn.

http://www.bjsrestaurants.com/

Kind of interesting though as the plan review states "tenant buildout" which would imply it's in the mall. They previous tried to get planning approval for a new building in the parking lot near Dillard's. I guess they didn't receive approval.

http://www.akron.com/akron-ohio-community-news.asp?aID=24285

Also, plan review for a place called "Planet Sub" in Portage Crossings in the Falls.

http://planetsub.com/

BJ's Brewhouse is a fairly large and growing chain that I have assumed had NEO plans soon. Its actually a big step above  Applebees... Pretty good. I often use it as a safe dinner bet when on west coast.

^Totally agree with this assessment regarding BJs. It is definitely about 3 full steps above CrApplebee's in terms of food quality, atmosphere and experience, if Applebee's has become to the bar/restaurant dine-in experience what McDonalds has been to fast food.

I've really been spoiled by the local dining options that are emerging around the region in my effort to support local businesses, but BJ's is a chain that I certainly don't mind patronizing once in awhile. It will be a nice addition to the Fairlawn/Montrose area.

Cool, glad to hear. Can't be any worse than the new Ray's, ha.

The latest to reveal plans to come to the party are Hospitality Restaurants, the Fairview Park-based group behind Rosewood Grill in Hudson; and PizzaFire, the Medina County-headquartered chain that plans to open some 20 locations in the next year.

The new restaurant owned by the Rosewood Grill folks will focus on seafood, and business partners are still considering possible names. AKRON, Ohio - For the first time in more than five years, Akron food trucks will line up downtown for lunch.

Cascade Cucina on the Plaza will run every Wednesday, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., May 24 through Sept. 27 at Cascade Plaza on South Main Street. To start, it will feature Summit County-based food trucks.

You have to hand it to former Mayor, Don Plusqualic. He never did cave in to the powerful and corrupt food truck lobby.

One of the biggest downfalls of Akron and the former cabinet is that they were too afraid to try any, because "what if..."

Their logic for not having the food trucks was that it would put the brick and mortar places out of business.

Crave Cantina finds a home in Cuyahoga Falls and a Latin concept

May 21, 2017 Updated 2 hours ago

Aaron Hervey thinks he has found the ideal location for his newest venture, Crave Cantina.

No matter that the site for the new restaurant, which will feature globally inspired tacos and Latin fare, lies right in the middle of the construction zone as Cuyahoga Falls works to open up Front Street to traffic. The work will be right outside Crave Cantina's front door beginning in July, said Hervey, who owns the new spot and the original Crave in Akron with his wife, Dana.

Crave Cantina is set open on Tuesday, May 23.

The new Administration has certainly been a breath of fresh air when it comes to commercial and retail development opportunities. Food Trucks are a perfect example. I've had friends on City Council for years - and for the longest time, I could only ever roll my eyes at their ongoing excuses for justifying their inactivity or fear of trying anything new. Anything remotely "trendy" - whether it had been proven to be successful or not - was often brushed aside.

^Agreed. Mayor Horrigan as well as Jason Segedy as the city's planning director have particularly done well in bringing a fresh perspective to Akron's governance that has been badly needed for years.

We still have a long way to go, but the difference between the current administration and the previous one is that it is possible to see the way forward now and realistically envision what one or more constructive end outcomes could be for the city.

Plusquellic and his admin weren't all bad by any means, but there is also such a thing as staying in the game too long. He really should have moved on about 10 years earlier than he did.

Next chapter coming for Akron's Urban Eats

By Dan Shingler

June 02, 2017

Akron's getting some new Urban Eats.

The little restaurant that could punch above its weight — and did — shut down in mid-May when its founders, chef Jason Scala and partner Liz Tyran, moved to Key West, Fla.

But it won't be closed for long. Landlord and downtown Akron developer Tony Troppe said he's already found some new Akronites to reopen the restaurant. He said that will happen sometime later in June.

Akron food trucks may get more freedom by next year — and restaurant owners aren’t happy about it

Every Wednesday afternoon, food truck offerings bring the sleepy corridor on Main Street to life during Cascade Cucina, where professionals from surrounding businesses converge on the green in Cascade Plaza to eat and socialize.

But for some surrounding restaurants, the event leaves business on Wednesday afternoons quieter than ever. Since the weekly city event began in May, Johnathan Hamad, the owner of Hamad’s on Main, said he’s lost hundreds of dollars every Wednesday to the competition directly across the street.

“I’m all for new businesses, but Akron in general already has enough restaurants,” Hamad said.

And yet he just opened a new place downtown.  :wtf:

Local food trucks are finding new avenues

July 16, 2017 Updated 3 days ago

By JENNIFER KARPUS-ROMAIN

Food trucks are again lining up in downtown Akron throughout the summer for the city's Cascade Cucina event on Wednesdays.

While that no doubt brings delight to food lovers and the business operators alike, street events only tell part of the story as an increasing number of mobile food operations see private events as a big source of income.

Missing Falls Brewery now headed to downtown Akron

By Rick Armon

Published: July 18, 2017

Missing Falls Brewery really will be missing a falls.

The brewery once slated to open in Munroe Falls is shifting gears and will now be located in the giant Canal Place complex in downtown Akron.

It also will be a lot bigger than first envisioned.

Missing Falls came onto the local scene in late 2015, with plans to open in a small shop at 10 N. Main St. in Munroe Falls.
