Say Cheese! Astronauts Snap Photo Of City From Space

Station Visible Again This Month

CINCINNATI -- While you can see the International Space Station as it flies over the Tri-State, NASA reminded residents that the station can see you, too. The space agency released a photo of Cincinnati taken from the station during one of its recent passes.

A large photo of view

When was that picture taken?? I doesn't look like the Banks construction has even started yet in this photo....

Newport Pavilion also looks like it just began preliminary earthworks as well. Looks like they hadn't repaved Central Parkway on the more western fringes.

Not impressed. Even Google Maps shows some preliminary sitework happening at The Banks, and in higher resolution.

Uh, that picture is so small you can barely see the Freedom Center, so how could anyone see or not see the incredibly small amount of work that has been done at The Banks, let alone repaving work.  I mean, you can barely tell work has started on The Banks on a quick drive by, so how could you tell from space??

Moreso than the picture quality, I think it's cool that the Intl Space Station took a pic of Cincy.

Did you view the larger resolution?

Central Parkway's western pavement aggregate was a lighter color, compared to the repaving where it is now completely dark. You can also see no construction work sans the Freedom Center.

Haha, it's a sweet picture, but you can make out the old parking garage still there at the QCSII site.  It was obviously taken over a year ago.

Does NASA not know about Google maps???  I like that NASA is doing some PR work, but they're going to have to do better than this image to impress me.

This is completely off topic... but... When is the last time you drove by the Banks?? You can definitely tell work is being done on a drive by...

And you can see the progress from space... look at the larger resolution pic.

Old image is old.  All the exif data is erased too, so we can't tell how old it is.

Jeez guys, the article is just mentioning the space station will be visible in the sky.  The photo is a nice little bonus.  It's not like it's their mission to shoot urban photos from space, lol.  Who are we to judge

It's still below ground, hard to tell from a drive by.

I'm in a Toyota RAV4 -- not exactly a tall SUV, and I could see the works ongoing from 2nd Street. The cranes are also dead giveaways.

holy cow thats a lot of progress on the banks!

IMO The google maps image and the NASA image are about the same vintage...and if the OH side and KY side are the same flight, then the google maps image is older, as the Newport Pavilion has not even started

Nasa releases images for PR purposes...and I don't think this image was released by NASA to create buzz for the Space Station flyover of Cincy...WLWT probably dug it up from the NASA image archives.

The much cooler images from the ISS (or other space missions) are those at oblique angles, which is what I'd hoped this was going to be.  Those are the views you don't get to see from anywhere else.  This stuff from directly overhead is just the same as aerial photos in Google Maps or elsewhere, which several above have noted.

Not that it isn't interesting, of course!  Just not as novel as other images from space.

We are some negative, rude, cynical, sons of bitches aren't we? ha

God bless the 5-1-3!

This is an old picture, because not only has the banks not been started but neither has QCSII or QCSI

In this picture QCSI was being constructed.  So it's almost 5 years old?

They never said it was a new photo.  I can't believe that some of you are griping that it doesn't show *all the progress* in our city over the past two years!  Oh god, what will our neighbors think!

Come on guys.

This is an old image, I can tell.

For as much as we spend on the space program we should at least be getting an updated aerial shot.

^Somehow I feel that we're not the ones who should assess the value and costs of space travel...

FYI, I think google has a more up-to-date shot.

^That's already been said.  Thanks though.

I tried searching for a date of the photo with no luck. but, yeah, I was more interested that the photo was taken by the ISS.

haha, just messing around Blue Line

Ahh, okay. :)

Well, OF COURSE it's an old picture.

If it was a NEW satellite view, it might look something more like this....

Let's make sure it doesn't look like this in November!!
