He trekked 24 hours, drinking and eating at every Starbucks in Manhattan BY SEAN EVANS DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER Friday, July 20th 2007, 7:20 PM In the ultimate caffeine jag, Mark Malkoff went to every single Starbucks in Manhattan - all 171 of them - in just 24 hours. July 16, 200915 yr I remember reading this story. I suppose it's no worse than that idiot who goes around photographing all the starbucks in the country and Canada http://www.starbuckseverywhere.net/ Personally I'm so tired of Starbucks I can't even stand to go into them anymore (although I do!). I like to think of myself as somewhat of a coffee aficionado (though nowhere close to mrnyc, apparently), but the quality of Starbucks has fallen so much (to say nothing of an uneven product from day to day) from when it first started, and I haven't found a local indie coffee place I like enough to frequent on a regular basis; I am therefore looking forward to my first cup of New York-made Tim Hortons coffee, which just this past weekend opened several stores in NYC (replacing about a dozen Dunkin' Donuts outlets). Having had TH coffee many times while visiting Canada, I can report that for a mass-produced product with no aspirations of trying to appeal to an upscale market base, their product is far superior to DD (sometimes drinkable but usually too weak) or any similar chain found in the U.S. So there! http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/

If you buy it by the can and make it at home--so you can control the proportions--it can be excellent; maybe it too will be available in New York. But I'll reserve my judgement until I try the product ready made in the store (unfortunately most of them, for the time being, are in midtown--especially in or nr. Penn Station) I've never even heard of dub cafe until now, but I'm willing to try it. Also, I heard of a new one just south of Washington Square, can't remember the name. I don't know what it is about all the new independent ones, but I just can't warm up to them. I remember the first one to make it big was "Joe" in the West Village. I've been there twice, I think it sucks okay, that's a little too critical, but their stuff is mediocre at best. It's also one of those places where everyone seems to know everyone else, so when you walk in as an "outsider" you really feel out of place...at least I did :x http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
July 16, 200915 yr Tim Hortons has been all over the NY Thruway for years now (at least on I-90)..... NYC is behind upstate NY??? Whaaaaaaaaaat? :-o
July 16, 200915 yr Tim Hortons has been all over the NY Thruway for years now (at least on I-90)..... NYC is behind upstate NY??? Whaaaaaaaaaat? :-o ha ha... NYC is behind the rest of the country in a lot of ways! Actually I don't know how extensive Tim Hortons is throughout the nation, but it makes sense that it's along the Thruway since that's closer to the Canadian border than NYC. I don't think it's that easy for an unfamilar chain (one unknown to most Americans, especially, despite such overwhelming name recognition right across the border) to set up shop in NYC due to the high costs--and hence, risks, involved. http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/

The Chain Plans to Find Out By CLAIRE CAIN MILLER Published: August 20, 2009 SAN FRANCISCO — As the recession wears on and fewer people are splurging at Starbucks, the coffee chain’s response is to raise prices. On Thursday, Starbucks stores in several cities started charging up to 30 cents more for some specialty beverages, though the company is charging less for some basic drinks. ........ http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/

August 22, 200915 yr I'm amazed that so many people still go crazy over Starbucks when there are so many local coffeeshops offering better coffee at a similar price. As a caffiene addict, sometimes when you need that "hit" it doesn't matter where you get it. Starbucks is selling a brand and brand image and a lot of people buy into it.
August 22, 200915 yr I'm amazed that so many people still go crazy over Starbucks when there are so many local coffeeshops offering better coffee at a similar price. I do go to local coffee shops as well, but many of them do not have as good of hours as the local Starbucks does.

I do go to local coffee shops as well, but many of them do not have as good of hours as the local Starbucks does. Convenience is a big factor in choosing to go to Starbucks; they're everywhere (and as mentioned, the hours). In New York there are Starbucks outlets literally within sight of each other. Also, the quality of the independent places aren't always so great, and sometimes they're even more expensive than Starbucks; but one of the most annoying aspects of them is how they take on a cult-like quality among regular patrons (admittedly, in its early days this is what Starbucks was like--I imagine especially in Seattle). A couple of years ago I went to an independent place in the West Village and it seemed like everyone there knew each other and were having a lengthy discussion with one woman who apparently comes in every day and how she was about to turn 96 years old. That actually was sort of funny. I should go back to see if she's still around. http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
August 22, 200915 yr I don't know about the early days, but Seattle is kind of like anyplace else with Starbucks today (or at least in 2000-03), just moreso. Speaking of being able to see one Starbucks from another, I remember a spot in Seattle where there was a Starbucks on one corner, and one on the opposite corner. The other two corners of that intersection were both Tully's (another coffee chain). A third Starbuck's was about a half block down from there, and if I remember right there was another non chain coffee shop within a block. Someone figured at some point in the 90's that Seattle had more espresso stands than ATM's. So yeah, lots of Starbuck's and similar chains. But also counterbalanced by people who preferred independents.
August 27, 200915 yr In the small town of Ossian, Indiana, maybe 1200 people or so, on a two-lane secondary state highway about twelve miles from Fort Wayne, there's a place called Brew-Ha. I think it's a small chain; I've seen a couple others, but I don't know how many stores there are, or what area they cover. Their coffee is fine and their baked goods are excellent; they have three or four varieties of killer cheesecake, their muffins and brownies are large and moist and fresh, and they just started offering Edy's Grand ice cream. Another plus is that just a block away is Heyerly's Bakery, a long-time locally owned operation that does a huge business in pastries and cakes. The image of a Heyerly's Apple Fritter just flashed in my mind, and I'll probably drool all over my keyboard now. The Starbucks near my house has good coffee, friendly staff, and at least one barista who's a hottie. Another plus is that instead of clearing the lot and building a new generic Starbucks, they cooperated with the redevelopment commission and historic preservation planners to repurpose a landmark Firestone station, providing an enclosed area with garage-style doors on three sides that can be raised in nice weather to provide open-air seating. I like to buy their whole beans to grind at home, but their pastries and baked goods completely suck; everything seems a couple days old, and dry. That's been the case with every Starbucks I've patronized.
August 27, 200915 yr This guy is incredibly stupid and yet I sort of have to hand it to him. If I took in "at least" 50 caffienated drinks in 24 hours, I'm almost positive I would drop dead. I start shaking after a large cold brewed coffee.

Feeling like you're having a heart attack is a common symptom, brought on my a high caffiene intake.

Feeling like you're having a heart attack is a common symptom, brought on my a high caffiene intake. Yeah. I blacked out a few times. I passed out in front of my house and once at my parents. So my doctor told me to cut out caffeine. I swore I would never give up coffee. I miss coffee soooooo much. I'll sneak a cup here and there, but i had to get rid of my beautiful coffee makers and all my beans. It's a daily struggle, I even signed up for a caffeine addiction support group. It's hard. I know how drug abusers feel.
August 27, 200915 yr You blacked out A FEW TIMES? Dude. You ARE a drug abuser. Oh God NO. Ive never even smoked a cigarette and I dont drink. All the caffeine was making my blood pressure go nuts, i felt a sharp pain and the next thing I know I fainted. The second time I was talking to my father in the hallway out our house, next thing I know I was on the floor and he was slapping & shaking me. Both times I sweating like nobody's business.

I hate to be the first person to break it to you, but caffiene is, by definition, a drug. Might be a legal one, but it's a drug nonetheless. And if you're consuming it in such high quantities that you're BLACKING OUT, you are most definitely a drug abuser.

August 27, 200915 yr 14 cups? Were you gulping it? I probably have between 6-10 cups (would that be 8oz? servings) A nice big mug on the hour commute, another large around ten and then another at around three. And maybe a cup at home around 7 at night. If I were to double that I would freak out and be stuck to the ceiling. Sneak some decaf in there.

August 27, 200915 yr Well I started in Jr high! Just kidding. I really started drinking coffee when I had summer job between sophmore and junior years of high school that started at 7:30 in the morning after being up late every night. When you have to stay awake you have to stay awake. Coffee works period plus it gives you that minty fresh breath that everyone loves....

It's so funny how people who refuse to admit things about themselves are quickly dismissive when things like logic and reason are put in front of their faces. They recognize that they are wrong, but it's too much to bear and/or their pride is too high, and thus a joking remark must be made, lest they feel bad about themselves. Seriously, someone could do a whole Psychology semester on message board behavior.

Seriously, someone could do a whole Psychology semester on message board behavior. trust me. I want to live, i know i have a problem. That is why I quit drinking coffee cold turkey. My entire family came to my house and went off on me. My cousin and brother dissembled my coffee machines, and took all the accessories or anything coffee related. My cousin check my garbage for coffee cups. My niece sniffs my breath every time she sees me. My parents go to my doctors appointment with me. My assistants don't let me drink coffee, its really hard to sneak a sip being under a microscope. I want to live to be old and cranky.
August 27, 200915 yr Until recently, my daily routine has started with brewing a 10-cup pot from one of the Starbucks extra bold blends, and consuming the entire contents over the next eight hours or so. I've had to confront the fact that I was way overdoing it to the detriment of my health. I've cut back to one cup daily, first thing in the morning. I still get the pleasure of the Starbucks Sumatra or Gold Coast without paying the premium for buying it by the cup. I still brew a 10-cup pot, and then portion it out into ZipLoc containers and put them in the freezer. At bedtime I set one out to thaw, and in the morning I just nuke it for a minute and it's ready to go. The flavor and aroma hold up pretty well. Sometimes I drink it black, and sometimes I like a little dairy with it. To avoid the fat content of cream or half-and-half or having them go bad before I use up the whole container, I tried non-fat powdered milk; three tablespoons in a mug works just about right, tastes good, and buffers the acidity just right. Much more healthful than powdered non-dairy creamers, too.

August 27, 200915 yr Well you can already be cranky so you are halfway there. But that is awful that you had to quit cold turkey, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do. I'd take health over coffee any day. I did get a lecture once from a Red Cross nurse when I gave blood because my blood pressure was through the roof because of coffee and lack of sleep. It freaked me out. It sounds like you were seriously addicted to coffee. My large coffee comsumption has more to do with my lifestyle with kids and 11 hour work days. On vacation I was only drinking two cups in the morning and that was it.

August 27, 200915 yr I want to live to be old and cranky. Well, you're halfway there... But I hear ya. I quit booze six years ago and stopped smoking 19 months ago. Hopefully this time I will be able to stay away from smokes. I've "quit" smoking so many times I've lost count. Every day I miss smoking, though I only occasionally miss drinking. But smoking didn't cause a huge change in my lifestyle like drinking did -- I could still remember, keep my balance, drive safely, not miss work, avoid going to the hospital for gastrointestinal problems, etc. But both were huge financial drains and I could feel my throat start to hurt after 18 years of smoking. If I didn't quit smoking ASAP, I feared I wouldn't be able to avoid getting cancer of the esophagus. I hope I quit early enough. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
August 27, 200915 yr I quit smoking two years ago and, while I wouldn't say that everyday is a challenge, I do wish I could smoke them and think about it everyday. It's the first time I've ever tried to quit and it's pretty damn empowering to know that I just...quit. No patches or gum. I smoked a cigarette on my break one day, wondered how long I could go without one and if I'd feel any better if I stopped, and I put the cigarette out and never picked up another one. Thankfully drinking isn't a problem for me. I love beer. I mean LOVE beer. Not in the fratboy sense, but in the beer snob sense. And I'm not giving that up.

I think about it all the time. My own damn need for coffee here in the office is my own curse. I demanded a certain type of coffee for my floor and now, I can't have coffee, it's like Vincent Schiavelli's character in the movie Ghost who wanted to have one more smoke.
