This can be confusing. I have been looking at places to rent and i have come up with limited options. I am a single female with a huge dog. I have seen places in tremont, cleveland heights, shaker heights, the "asian district" and Lakewood ect. I have never been to Cleveland, so have no idea whats so ever. I noticed it seems that housing is also really kinda cheap here. Where I am from that can some times reflect the area, but it seems like it might not here. Is there any suggestions for a mid 20's single female who would still feel safe walking her big dog at night.  There was this cute loft i loved in Asiantown i found... but not sure if thats too close to Glenville which i saw from a lot of post is a bad area. What are the lines that might seperate... how far east on St Clair or in that area can you go. Also Cleveland Heights I noticed has the same issue. Thanks for any help.

[*]Have you read any previous relocation threads?

[*]Where, exactly, do you live.  This gives us an indication as to what type of neighborhood you like or are accustomed to.

[*]Housing in Cleveland is cheaper in comparison to other big cities

[*]Where are you getting /who is the source of information that Glenville is bad?

[*]Where in Cleveland Heights were you, as it's one our best and most diverse neighborhoods.

[*]Outside of what you listed above, how much is your monthly budget?

[*]Where is your job located?

[*]What are your "must haves" in a neighborhood?

The more information you give us, the better we can advise you.

Glenville is actually fairly far away.  There is an area of St. Clair/Superior that is adjacent to the "asian district" that is pretty rough, though.  I would stay west of East 55th, and probably even west of say E. 45th or so, it seems to get a bit rougher closer to East 55th, although I'm judging that more by stuff like upkeep of homes, litter, or other such "broken window" indicators than by actual knowledge of crime rate.

When I jog, I "feel" safe up to and including E 40th. Between E. 40th and University Circle I would not recommend having your first experience of Cleveland living.

But there are lots of great places to choose from, and they are listed ad nauseum in other relocation threads here.

Yeah  I have been reading the other posts on a few places and that may be where I could be getting mixed information on certain areas. Right now I live downtown Milwaukee, Wi in the "wards" so i am use to loft style living. I have never been to cleveland, again some of my information might be scewed by reading posts of living north of coventry. My monthly budget is 1200 including utilities. Which i know I could then definately afford cleveland heights, I am just use to space. Right now I rent a 2000 sq ft loft, so I cant be choosy but you would love to stay with that. And the job would be down town. Im not looking for necessarily a bustling night life out my window, because right now Im use to traveling a bit to get to it even though the area is up and coming where i am now. I just like that friendly neighborhood feeling. I love that I can walk to my coffee shop in the morning and they know my name. :)

Im sure some people who live in neighborhoods between East 40 and University Circle would appreciate that "plug".

Then without visiting, I'm hoping you'll keep an open mind and not jump to conclusions.  I always suggest visiting a neighborhood at different times of the day and time to see how it feels to you.

Where are you going to be working or going to school?

For 1200 you could easily live in Shaker Square, University Circle, Coventry, Cedar-Fairmont, Asian Village or Downtown.  The problem would be finding housing that would allow a large dog.

Yeah the black lab and two cats are posing a slight problem right now... I just dont know how long I would be staying to look into purchasing a house. Thank you all though for your imput. I will just have to drive around and see :)

OK.  but the more information you provide the better we can help.

I think you should look at Tremont.  Very dog-friendly.

With a big dog, you will be pretty safe no matter where you go! :) But having a big dog may limit the housing options for you. Some apartment complexes will allow only a small dog, or even just one cat. You would probably do better renting a duplex or a house, such as in Lakewood or Tremont, than being up in an apartment building. Not only might that give you some latitude with your landlord in having a big dog there, but your dog would also probably appreciate the space.

Yards are small or nonexistent in Lakewood and in city neighborhoods like Tremont or Asiatown, but tend to be a bit bigger in Cleveland Heights. You can trade off by looking for rental homes and duplexes near parks. Tremont has Lincoln Park off West 14th, Lakewood has Lakewood Park, Madison Park, Kaufmann Park, the huge Metroparks (with a dog park) by Rocky River, plus many pocket parks. The Cudell/Edgewater neighborhood in Cleveland has Edgewater Park. Cleveland Heights has Cain Park, Forest Hill Park and lots of pocket parks.

Many of Tremont's homes have reasonably large yards if they don't have an accessory unit (a house behind the main house).  The lots are narrow, but often very deep.

Thanks -- I forgot about Clark Field!
