Posted July 21, 200915 yr I want a happy thread, its been a while, so I want to ask forumers two questions. What is your favorite thing (development, natural formation, institution) that you brag about Cleveland to first time visitors? The second is what future development are you most proud of? And if any CLE newbies are on the thread, what has most pleasently surprised you? (MODS, IF YOU FEEL THIS WOULD BE BETTER BEING PART OF ANOTHER THREAD SUCH AS *I LOVE CLEVELAND* PLEASE GO AHEAD AND MOVE IT)
July 21, 200915 yr Depending on the crowd, I usually show off: 1) Little Italy 2) University Circle 3) Westside Market 4) Playhouse Square Downtown Nightlife, Coventry nightlife, Little Italy Nightlife (only because I know everyone) I've also brought people to the "A Christmas Story House," Sokolowski's, Great Lakes Brewing Company, Garfield Monument, and Cavs games.
July 21, 200915 yr 1. Westside Market 2. I don't really know - how are you "proud" of the future, of something that hasn't been built yet?
July 21, 200915 yr ^How innovative and cool we are, for instance, MOCA as the centerpiece of the Uptown development, or the port move and lakefront redevelopment, or the 3C rail line....
July 21, 200915 yr 1. Tough call. Depends on who is visiting. Either CMA, E 4th, or RRHOF. 2. In terms of projects that are in the works, it has to be the TT restoration for me. For future/potential projects, it is the port move and lakefront development.
July 21, 200915 yr Shaker Square via the train! ;) ;D I think that goes without saying. :o True...true. But I also like to take people to our finest restaurant and I love University Circle & Shaker Lakes.
July 21, 200915 yr I like to show off the view from Cliff Dr. This is just west of Edgewater Park and provides the best view of downtown IMHO. Lake View Cemetery West Side Market
July 21, 200915 yr The Lake...a lot of people not from Ohio, for some reason, don't understand that it's not just a lake, it's a great lake ;)

July 21, 200915 yr I like to show off the view from Cliff Dr. This is just west of Edgewater Park and provides the best view of downtown IMHO. I was thinking the same thing. The Lake...a lot of people not from Ohio, for some reason, don't understand that it's not just a lake, it's a great lake ;) The view from Cliff Drive also makes it clear that Lake Erie isn't a lake (at least in the sense many people not from this area understand). Instead, it's an inland sea. As for a future development, I don't take people to a site where X will go someday. I have seen too many projects fail to materialize to subject myself to disappointment and my city to potential embarassment by saying something will happen and then have to explain later why it didn't. If someone asks me "What's that construction project" then I'll tell them, sometimes with pride. July 22, 200915 yr A great drive that I've taken people on: Start at Beachland / Waterloo area, get on Lakeshore Blvd and head into Bratenahl until LSB becomes MLK Drive...drive through Rockefeller Park into U.Circle and then find your way onto Fairmount Blvd Historic District in Cleve Hts. It's great and it's all connected. And a lot of fantastic architecture. A friend of mine from NY was blown away. Future: complete restoration of Euclid Ave from Pub Sq to E. 17 Sadly, though, the jewel of Euclid--The Hippodrome--will not be a part of it
July 22, 200915 yr I always felt the arcade was a sure fire way to wow visitors. A new development that would excite me would be a rejunevation of the flats.
July 22, 200915 yr All these are fabulous suggestions! I am very familiar with all of them... All I can really offer at this point is something a little off the beaten path....Much of my work has taken me into the realms of "natural Cleveland" and its buffer zones...many 'best kept secret' places and pockets with stunning natural beauty that not a lot are familiar with. (even beyond the metro parks) I won't list these types of places here...but should anyone want to know.. PM me. For a hint.. Gildersleeve Mountain, where the beginning of the Allegheny plateau supposedly starts, you can see all the way to the lake and to downtown Cleveland. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gildersleeve_Mountain The photo looks as though Cleveland is sprouting up in the middle of a forest! Also, much closer...and as long as we are near Clif Drive... Did anyone yet mention some areas along Lake Drive...going into Rocky River are nice to show the large homes...Yaught Club area, which looks like a scene out of Jaws... Huntington Beach areas in the Cleveland M. Parks, Rocky River Park is nice... How about West Blvd or East Blvd? Nice homes there... Overlook Road in the Hts. with some nice homes..Coventry.. All mentioned, I think. Everyone has suggested so many good things...in the city..the core and some surrounds.. I cannot think of a lot more off the top so quickly... But... Maybe as far as the 'greater Cleveland region', or what they are calling "plus"...and this is stretching it a bit, but maybe a day trip to Kelly's Is.... or Holmes county for the best swiss cheese..... Guggisberg on Rt. 557 and head south for a very scenic drive...and even get off and travel some of the gravel roads....Or even Middlefield, but go to the Co-op for the cheese as it is more true to the original M.Field cheese recipe. Well, aside from all mentioned, I cannot help but include what is left of the 'country side' that skirts and protects our fair city. This is good especially in Autumn, as well as the M. Parks. I have a list of scenic roads. The possibilities are really endless.... Oh, how about some of the quirky restaurants and areas along Loraine Ave.

If someone asks me "What's that construction project" then I'll tell them, sometimes with pride. I agree.. It is currently embarrassing looking at nothing but exposed dirt at Flats East. I suggested they at least place some signage.
July 23, 200915 yr Okay here goes: Surfing on our Great Lake, the ornate ceiling at the Public Square entrance to Tower City, West Side Market, The Beachland Ballroom, University Circle, Coventry, Sokolowski's University Inn, the stadium formerly known as Jacobs Field, Great Lakes Brewing, the Flats circa 1992 (RIP) and last but not least, my local slice of friendly coolness that is bela dubby beer/art/cafe in Lakewood. As for the future, hands down, reconnecting with the lakefront is the key. But any project that preserves our architectural heritage comes in a close second. July 24, 200915 yr A great drive that I've taken people on: Start at Beachland / Waterloo area, get on Lakeshore Blvd and head into Bratenahl until LSB becomes MLK Drive...drive through Rockefeller Park into U.Circle and then find your way onto Fairmount Blvd Historic District in Cleve Hts. It's great and it's all connected. And a lot of fantastic architecture. A friend of mine from NY was blown away. Anyone have an idea of how bikeable this stretch is outside of Lakeshore and MLK through the park? I might choose to start in the Heights if I were biking the thing but it seems like a great way to spend a sunny Saturday afternoon.

Hills?? HA! You haven't biked hills in a city until you bike Sydney, or San Fran.... Cake, what is mentioned above. Great natural interval workout. Love it! :-D

July 24, 200915 yr Yes... I was actually going so fast I thought my wheels were going to fall off... Scary... I cannot imagine those who do those mountain races in France and how fast they must get going.

July 24, 200915 yr I grew up in Stow and my family's existence was Akron-centric. We visited Cleveland for Cavs and Indians games, to go to the old fish market, and the Bank Antique store. Otherwise, Akron was "our city." Then my parents moved overseas; I moved to Cleveland. So when they came to visit me in the Cleve last spring I felt they needed to "see" the city. So, I showed them, among other places: Ohio City (westside market and the beautiful homes), Shaker Square, Terminal Tower, Edgewater, the Tremont Tap House (best burgers in the City), and Algebra Tea House (wednesday night vegetarian, Libyan-style cous cous). Not sure what future development excites me most. I think I'd just like to show them a better utilized waterfront.
July 24, 200915 yr The Industrial Valley True. Depending on the person, I'll take them down Independence Road through the heart of the East Side Works. Though I shouldn't say "east side" because there's only "one side works" anymore! I'm hopeful it will still be -- I've heard rumors it won't reopen which surprises me considering it was Mittal's most productive steel mill just before the economic shutdown. July 24, 200915 yr re: biking up cedar hill you can always carry your bike up the elephant stairs among the south side dorms at case.
July 24, 200915 yr West Side Market and ... since I'm half-Mexican, my family loves the grocery store next to Mi Pueblo on Lorain Road. Also a big fan of Whiskey Island in the summer and Tremont.

I think I'm going to have to recruit some Puerto Ricans, I be damned if yall Mexican's be the majority of the Latino population of the board. lol :whip: Everyone talks about that grocery store. What is it Super Mercado or something like that??

But my parents and grandmother live in the Youngstown area, and when they come up to visit, they stock up on tortillas and spices and tamales. Mmm, now I'm hungry.
July 24, 200915 yr Yep, it's the Super Mercado. They improved mightily when they expanded, and it's one of the things that keeps me from being homesick. MTS, you would think that since Puerto Ricans outnumber Mexicans in Greater Cleveland that you'd have a leg up on us. That said, if you do some recruiting, would you mind bringing in some vatos who can properly use apostrophes? :-D
