Posted July 26, 200915 yr Originally land used for a zoo later named"Beechwalde" meaning beech forest, which ended up being owned and developed by Joseph A. Jeffrey of the Jeffrey Manufacturing Company. After it switched hands the name was changed to current "Beechwold", which remains today. A couple of remnants including a stone bridge remain along the ravine where homes were built. MAP The High Street portion is urban-suburban, thanks to the urban commercial overlay which dictates a walkable environment with buildings up against the sidewalk and rear parking.
July 26, 200915 yr Nice! Looks cool, moist, and secluded, and I really like some of the architecture.

July 26, 200915 yr One of my favorite neighborhoods in Columbus. Nice old homes, surrounded by nice old trees. Funny what you can do with unlimited amounts of money. Actually not as expensive as some areas, but to me nearly perfect--except for the annoying lack of sidewalks....grrrrrrr.
July 26, 200915 yr Nice..Love the bucolic look...the trees make it come all together. The only thing I cringe at are the chains like Panera Bread..... and Chipotle, which is simply Mc Donald's wearing Mexican clothing, or trying to.
July 26, 200915 yr Nice photos - I guess when I lived in Columbus I never knew where Beechwold exactly was - I thought of it as that cluster of retail at High and Morse, up to Graceland, but never looked west of High at the actual neighborhood. East of High, it's pretty bland housing as I remember it, but this area west of High is beautiful. Nice..Love the bucolic look...the trees make it come all together. The only thing I cringe at are the chains like Panera Bread..... and Chipotle, which is simply Mc Donald's wearing Mexican clothing, or trying to. In October 2006, McDonald's fully divested its investment in Chipotle, part of a larger initiative to divest all of its non-core business restaurants – Chipotle, Donato's Pizza, and Boston Market – so that it could squarely focus on the main McDonald's chain. http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4188/is_20061016/ai_n16781055/
July 26, 200915 yr There really is a lot of this kind of stuff in town. I think some of the filthy sprawl that has happened in Columbus is a result of these well-maintained, classy areas being off the beaten path and away from people's consciousness (especially move-in from other cities) simply because there aren't big box stores and interstates in their face. So instead of people moving into the Beechwolds, Bexleys and Clintonvilles, they just default to Grove City because there's a Wal*Marts and a Best Buy there.

I just don't support these kinds of businesses.
July 27, 200915 yr ^ heh heh --- that reminds me that on the chowhound food forum the soul-less corporate paneras and cheesecake factories are known as 'the devil,' at least according to the curmudgeonly founder of the site. he is the polar opposite of that. if some central australian aboriginal tribe opened a restaurant in queens where they had an appetizer where you turn over rocks and lick the ants off he would be there raving about it!

Most of these places do nothing to promote local produce, and sustainable ethical farming practices...everything to increase energy consumption....and it is just not my cup of coffee to go to clone zone places when I can get superior product from independent/locally owned establishments where I know who is handling my food and where it came from. As for the chain gang... Well, They're not my benefactor as many are conditioned to think about such entities. And its fine if you want to support it, but don't disrespect others' decisions not to.
July 27, 200915 yr Unfortunately, sprawling development seems to be common with all of the familiar chains near urban upper-class neighborhoods. Whether you're a fan of Chipotle or Panera or not, very important is the layout which has been adopted which encourages walking and biking to a degree. Further down you have a local branch of a local establishment, Northstar Cafe, which distinctly states they are located in Beechwold, not Clintonville, even though it's eight blocks south of the ravine that is the centerpiece of the neighborhood. Definitely one of the most contentious sub-neighborhood boundaries out there. Seems like the High St portion on the west side of the street goes on further south than the residential portion, at least going by the businesses opting for "Beechwold" in the name of their business. So here's a snapshot of Northstar I happened to get, just to be safe, which is also a new building built in line with the overlay requirements which don't allow anymore sprawl.
