Posted July 28, 200915 yr Ok so check this out.... According to Wikipedia, the Rhodes state office building is 629 feet and was completed in 1974 (the year I was born). Anyway, The building's odd shape is attributed to a last-minute decision to cap the buildings height; originally, the building was supposed to be nearly 150 feet (46 m) taller. Here is the link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhodes_State_Office_Tower First of all, are there any renderings in existance of what it was supposed to look like? Secondly, is there anyone here with the photoshop skills to give us an idea of what could have been?

July 30, 200915 yr yep! here we go....found it! http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,11015.0.html
July 30, 200915 yr Yikes. I don't like the Rhodes Tower as it is, I can't imagine a taller/more prominent one... :-P
July 30, 200915 yr This is one building that I am glad is NOT any taller. Don't want that to be the signature building and overshadow Leveque.
July 30, 200915 yr Funny photoshop image Walker! But I am also pleased the Rhodes Tower was not built at the taller height. As much unloved as the current building is, it would be much more unloved at the taller height. At the current height, at least it doesn't visually overpower the LeVeque Tower and the other towers on Capitol Square. From J. Remy's previous "Fun With Photoshop" thread: The Rhodes Tower as built The taller Rhodes Tower not built
July 30, 200915 yr According to Wikipedia, the odd shape of the building is because of a last minute change in height so I wonder if the top of the building had an all together different design to it. I wonder if the north side of the building was supposed to be flat instead of the weird two box-like shapes on the roof of the Rhodes? I wish we had access to the original plans for the building. BTW, my apologies to J. Remy for starting a duplicate thread.

July 31, 200915 yr I wish they would do something with the top of it. A nice pyramid with a spire would do just nicely...

August 4, 200915 yr If I could make any change to Rhodes Tower, I'd do it at the street level. The only people who care about what the top looks like are skyscraper photographers. ;) If you stroll through the Pearl Market on Tue or Fri, there's some great vibrancy down Pearl & Lynn Alleys to the side and back of Rhodes Tower with the vendor booths. On other days of the week, there is still some vibrancy there with some of the the other alley-facing businesses, but the Rhodes Tower side is a giant blank wall. Punch a few holes in there. Set up small spaces for new businesses. Take in some rent money. Make the alleyspace space more vibrant. Maybe that's just me though. ;)
August 5, 200915 yr It's just you. Tear down the building, set up an ice skating rink, white-girl-dancing-with-geese fountain, and some trees stolen from the Bronx Zoo and you'll have yourself an instant public space. Columbus Commons? I'm with Walker... make the ground level facing the alley more integrated.

August 7, 200915 yr I was thinking about putting a hole in the side of the Rhodes Tower facing Pearl Alley earlier today after seeing MSI's website and plan for Pearl Alley when I was listening to Columbus Undergrounds Podcast #26. Thanks again Walker for all that you do. I loved that podcast! I pretty much agreed with everything they had to say and I actually thought a lot about what they had to say. :-)
August 7, 200915 yr Ha! You're the only guy I know who trolls his own website. ;) That's the true charm of UrbanOhio.
