Independence Air files for bankruptcy; will continue flying

 

Independence Air parent company FLYi Inc. has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and will take bids from potential buyers under a court-supervised auction process.

Heheh...this bankruptcy has an impact on me as well, I work for Independence Air here in Columbus. ;-)

 

Most of us here already saw it coming. I personally remain hopefull that an outside buyer can be found and that Columbus service can be retained, but the realist in me says it's a longshot. It was definitely a fun ride...I've loved every second I've worked for the airline and we have a ton of loyal flyers, but the core business plan just became unfeasable with the rise in fuel prices as fierce competition from competitors. Several carriers are hiring locally however, so hopefully I can secure a job with one of them if FLYi shuts its doors.

Independence Air to shut down

Low-cost carrier succumbs to bankruptcy, will stop flying Thursday; refunds should be available.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money.com) - Low-cost carrier Independence Air will shut down as of Jan. 5 due to bankruptcy, a company statement said Monday.

Fares in many cities could be on their way up

After Independence Air shuts down Thursday, airfares in many of the more than 30 cities it serves could double or even triple, airfare experts predict.

"We're going to learn the true meaning of 'sky high,' " airline consumer expert Tom Parsons, CEO of Bestfares.com, said Monday. "People who live in places like Charleston, W.Va., are going to wish they had supported Independence Air."
