So here we are in (gasp) Hoboken, New Jersey in route Liberty Science Center.

The Hoboken Train Station.

At this station there is:

  • The MTA/NJ Transit Rail Service.  The Port Jarvis and Passack Metro North lines are operated by NJ Transit.
  • PATH Rail Service
  • Hudson-Bergen Light Rail
  • Ferry Service to Manhattan
  • Bus Terminal

The terminal was built by the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad.

We came out of the PATH train into the track level of the Train station.

The waiting room is gorgeous

What does this remind you of?

As we start out to the Light Rail Terminal....a monsoon moves in, it turns pitch black and everyone runs into the terminal.

Its raining really hard

You can barely see lower manhattan

The rain lets up so I was able to snap a shot of the water side of the terminal

Since my nephew was steaming and pissed off due to the rain, I break into "the sun will come out tomorrow" when the clouds broke.

It was drizzling so I told him we could take the train to the station and see if it dries out, if not...it's back to the city.

So we board the Hudson-Bergen Light rail and I have to say, I was surprised at how nice it is.  I'm ashamed to admit it, but I like the train more than my beloved shaker rapid trains.....

.....the layout and stations, not so much.  The first station is about equal distance as Shaker Square to South Woodland.  However the drivers drive at 5 mph.  it was maddening.

It continued to rain, so we got off at exchange place in New Jersey.

Back in Manhattan at the WTC.  Some prick try to tell me the kids couldnt take pictures.  I told them to continue taking pictures until im arrested.  I made a phone call ... someone came whispered into the guys ears...then he scampered away with his tail between his legs.

The battery died...

The Port Authority is notoriously uptight about photo-taking on their property. I once got barked at for taking photos at a PATH station, and that was while I was taking my photos as a Port Authority consultant for official Port Authority business, while wearing an orange Port Authority safety vest... And after I had already checked in with the station master and Port Authority police!

Photos on MTA property are permitted as long as you're not using flash or a tripod.

Great photo set! Just my kinda stuff!

The Hoboken Terminal is a gem! I'm so glad it was preserved, and it looks like it's well cared for.

I share your feelings about the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail... The rolling stock is nice, but the stations are like bad 1990's South Florida postmodernism. The trains speed up a bit once you get away from downtown Hoboken, but I agree they seem way too slow and the stops are much too frequent. Given that most of my light rail riding experience has been on the HBLR and Boston's Green Line, I guess it's natural that I have a bias in favor of heavy rail metro systems.

Yes, they are overzealous.  Trust that guy wont bother anyone else.

I took pictures with you and KJP in mind

Seattle's surface light rail stations look pretty nice, as do the trains.  Light rail has finally "arrived", I think, but its a shame the earlier systems have boxy trains and "festival marketplace" stations.

I've still never been on a path train or been to Jersey City.  Want to check out the Newark subway sometime.

Thanks for the pics MTS. The skylight reminds me of the Scranton station, which was also built by DL&W. But were you suggesting that the skylight reminded you of CUT? If so, do you remember that the CUT skylight didn't have any colored glass? It's was pretty boring as I recall.

The photo across the Hudson to a storm-soaked Manhattan is awesome. Glad to see NYC finally got some rain this summer!  :-P

And the first time I visited NYC in 1985, I went to the top of the WTC  and took pictures from there of the Jersey side of the Hudson. It was nothing but rotting buildings and debris-strewn fields. It always amazes me that it now looks like this just 24 years later....

Are New Jersey's taxes lower?  What is motivating all this new construction in Jersey City?  Obviously the direct rail connection from the WTC is awfully convenient.

I don't know about taxes, but the real estate prices are certainly much lower in NJ. The HBLR also did a lot to spur development along its route.

No, the skylight reminds me of the original key bank building.

We've had nothing but rain.  The kids leave today and they are pissed that there was so much rain. They've been in 15 days and it's rained at least 10.

Yes, Jersey has grown.  Jersey city has always been a magnet for city workers, but in the late 90's, hoboken, wehawken, cliffside, Union City, west new york and Fort Lee all started targeting New Yorkers with cheap rent and condo's.  At one point you couldn't turn on the TV without seeing a ad in N New Jersey advertising units at "sign a two year lease, get 3/6 months free".  Most of the area South of Liberty state park is still garbage.

Ice with the water?

Ice with the water?

No knucklehead.  Back in the day when there was no "air conditioning" water fountains in ornate buildings were labeled as "ice water fountains".

No, the skylight reminds me of the original key bank building.

That was Society For Savings. Key Bank was an Albany-based company that moved its headquarters to Cleveland when it merged with Society in the early 1990s.

Don't get technical on me, you know what I mean, damnit!

Amazing that it was raining that day, hasn't done that much this summer in the city..

Finally ... you've been weaned off breast milk and are now on to ovaltine. Ahhhh....you kids grow up so fast.

I hope it won't ruin the rest of your life if it does!  Be warned, in 25 years, it will seem like yesterday you were worried about the weather!  You won't believe how quickly time flies!
