March 26, 20214 yr Interesting that the a city largely built in the 50s and 60s embraces density whereas a lot of talented neighborhoods built on density in the bigger city fight it.
March 29, 20214 yr Demolition is wrapping up for Arlington Gateway (3-27-21) New Upper Arlington Highschool Devon Pool renovations
April 13, 20214 yr Here's what Crawford Hoying sees filling in the Westmont at the Lane project in Upper Arlington Dan Eaton - Columbus Business First - Apr. 13, 2021 "Crawford Hoying still has restaurant, retail and office space to fill at its Westmont at the Lane project in Upper Arlington. On Tuesday, the Dublin-based developers confirmed that the first two commercial tenants at the $60 million site are a Local Cantina restaurant and Hammer & Nails men’s grooming boutique. ... The residential component is progressing as well. Starr said the apartments will be online in the next 60 days."

Yeah, now that everything is in place, I'd imagine that they'll want to get going pretty quickly. The community center itself is probably going to take a bit longer, however. In the city's press release about the referendum results, they say they'll be doing design work "over the next year," with construction taking another two years after that.
May 7, 20214 yr After winning vote, Upper Arlington community center expected to open in 2024 Nate Ellis - ThisWeek News - May 7, 2021 "Through the process, a seven-story community center concept included an indoor swimming pool, fitness facilities, three gymnasiums, a walking/running track, senior-center programming space, a child daycare component and a multipurpose event space. ... 'We will then hire a design team this summer to design the building, and we anticipate selecting a construction firm later this year,' he said. 'Right now, we are estimating (opening in) late 2024, but we will have a firmer timeline once we get through the design process and select a builder.'"
May 12, 20214 yr Went by Kingsdale yesterday and although there isn't fencing up yet, there was a couple new pieces of machinery sitting pretty close to the Macy's building. Some people in the Starbucks across the street were speculating on whether or not they were already there to knock the Macy's building down or not.

I was disappointed not to see a nod to it in the new development, but they could certainly use it for something...
May 12, 20214 yr I heard a while back that they were planning on selling single blue bricks to any community members who were interested in having a little piece of history... But I haven't heard anything else about it since
May 14, 20214 yr Fencing is now up around the old Macy's building... shouldn't be too much longer til it comes down
May 19, 20214 yr Hope everyone had a chance to say goodbye and pay their respects! Macy's is coming down at this very moment! It will be so nice to see that area of UA re-energized again. It has really been a long time coming.

May 19, 20214 yr lol. im old school and have never posted a pic before, believe it or not! but it appeared to be roughly a quarter of the way down.
May 19, 20214 yr Wouldn't "Pics or it didn't happen" be nice when it comes to Downtown in the '60s and '70s?

This tweet from the city would seem to suggest that they are planning on saving the blue bricks in some capacity (unless "tile" here is referring to something else).
May 20, 20214 yr The City of UA is planning on selling the blue bricks to community members. Proceeds will go toward the new Community Center. Their website says more details coming soon.
May 20, 20214 yr I used to joke that the blue bricks wound up on the inside of Hoof Hearted Brewing on 4th St. but of course the Macy's hadn't been torn down yet.

May 24, 20214 yr Just drove past the old Lazarus building. Better go and get your last looks because they have started making progress tearing it down from the outside now. They are moving quick over there!
May 26, 20214 yr Heard a interesting little nugget today from someone who is involved with UA schools... UA's last day of school is Thursday. They are having prom there Thursday night. That will be the last event ever in the old UA High School. Students were also aloud to tag the inside and outside of the building, because it's days are very numbered. Apparently they are planning on tearing down the old building "very soon". Edited May 26, 20214 yr by Luvcbus
May 26, 20214 yr ^My wife works there - some of the teachers are shocked, SHOCKED, that there is profanity in some of the tags.

But then in the same breath he told me there was quite a few generic tags of a certain member of the male anatomy! Lol

June 2, 20214 yr Crews started putting up fencing around the old UA High School today. I was told they expect to begin tearing it down "within a week or so". I noticed they still have numerous trees marked for removal, where the new baseball and softball fields will be built.

June 9, 20214 yr I know they are demolishing the old high school, but why? Is there something planned for the site already? Or is this just preparing the site to advertise it for development or something?
June 9, 20214 yr ^The new high school was built next door - it's huge. The old high school site will become athletic fields.
June 9, 20214 yr 20 minutes ago, TIm said: I know they are demolishing the old high school, but why? Is there something planned for the site already? The softball and baseball fields will be built on the side of the property where the old building sat. That side will also become parking because some of the old parking areas were lost. Since the slice of land their campus is on isn't real big they basically had to "flip" everything from one side to the other.

June 21, 20213 yr Drove past over the weekend but looks like they are making some quick work at the Arlington Gateway site. They had some steel beams already in ground at the edge of the parcel over by Starbucks. They've got the privacy netting up though so it's tough to see everything but there is a lot of equipment there and some holes being dug out as well.

Just took a "detour" through UA to check some things out... -The old UAHS looks to be a little less than half way down. -Lazarus/Macy's is about 90% down now. Also (I know it's not UA) but the building at Lane and Kenny is at six stories. If you drive behind it, there are some more areas apparently being prepped for new buildings. Has the next phase of buildings going in back there been approved already? Edited June 21, 20213 yr by Luvcbus
