July 26, 20213 yr Anyone interested in checking out the inside of the new Upper Arlington High School- there will be an open house on Sunday, August 15th from 2 to 4
July 26, 20213 yr Golden Bear Shopping Center redevelopment to move forward, demolition set for January 2022 “Plans for the $56 million redevelopment hit an impasse last summer when Arcadia wanted to cut some of the proposed office space for 23 residential condos, but in February the developer and the city agreed the project would move forward with the originally proposed 20,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space, 24,000 square feet of second-floor office space and 79 condominiums. July 26, 20213 yr Any tower crane evidence at the Arlington Gateway site? It's been like two whole weeks since we got a new tower crane and I'm getting impatient.
July 26, 20213 yr I've been super busy and haven't been able to drive over that way in the past two weeks. Was usually over there every 3 days or so, have to imagine there has been some solid progress at both Arlington Gateway and the old Lazarus site.

Pretty sure the city should have went with the extra condominiums. I’m sure the office space will fill up, but might be a while.
July 27, 20213 yr Was actually able to drive by the Arlington Gateway site yesterday afternoon. Tons of progress over there and they even had one of those big drill things onsite (to use the technical term). They got rid of the privacy screening as well so you can see in their easily. Right now it's an enormous hole in the ground, but it looks pretty cleaned up so I'm assuming they are going to start doing more than digging soon.
August 9, 20213 yr New tower crane base is now up at Arlington Gateway! Edited August 9, 20213 yr by CbusOrBust
August 9, 20213 yr You guys know that Wendy's commercial that has the guy singing in a hip hop voice: "bag alert, major baaag alert"... ? As I drive around the city checking everything out, whenever I see a new tower crane going up, I always sing in the same voice: "crane alert, major craaane alert"...! Try it... It's fun. Lol

August 10, 20213 yr Upper Arlington community center planned for Kingsdale Macy's site lands $2M gift The Upper Arlington community center planned as part of the redevelopment of the Kingsdale Macy's just got a $2 million boost from one of Central Ohio's best-known families. Loann Crane donated the money in honor of her late husband, Bob Crane, who will be the community center's namesake, according to a news release. The $2 million is the first significant gift the facility received to help construct the $54 million facility. Organizers of a new capital campaign hope to to raise at least 10% of the project's cost from private funds. August 13, 20213 yr Just a friendly reminder: If you're interested in checking out the inside of the brand new Upper Arlington High School- There is an open house this Sunday, August 15th from 2p-4p. I've spoke with a couple people that have got to take a sneak peek, and they say it's going to be quite the home for the Golden Bears.
August 15, 20213 yr Just got back from the open house at UAHS... I can't imagine better high school facilities anywhere in the state. A couple of the areas that really stood out to me were the performance arts center and the fieldhouse. The fieldhouse includes six basketball courts. It's much bigger inside than it looks from the outside. I came away very impressed.

I am sure they have a top notch facility-it is Upper Arlington. I am impressed with how they are adding density around Lane Avenue, what they are doing with Kingsdale, etc. And they are back over 35,000 in population as well.

August 16, 20213 yr That's pretty awesome. Having a pool at your high school in Ohio does not seem to be very common.

Off the top of my head, the schools who have their own pool on campus are Upper Arlington, St. Charles, Columbus Academy, New Albany, and Thomas Worthington. All other high schools use their local YMCA or Rec Center pool as far as I know. Some schools don't have any pool at all and their swimmers are forced to practice on their own with their club teams. I know there were talks in Pickerington about building a pool about a decade ago, but it never materialized.

It seems communities (at least around Columbus) have mostly determined it to be more cost-effective for the public to build a community rec center rather than put a pool in a school building.

We didn’t have a ymca, I am not sure we even had a Rec center. that makes sense, have the city pay and care for it.

Yeah I've been in every single school in Licking County as I use to be a health inspector there. Don't think a single one had a pool and more than one of them was a large modern school. State I'm from it was odd to not have a pool. Most of the schools were either at the Newark or Pataskala YMCA I think and sometimes used the facilities at Denison which are honestly amazing. I went to the open house and was thinking the same thing. There's a ton of places where kids goofing off could take a turn for the worse very quickly. Even in the library, there's an area with "big steps" for people to sit on and read. I was thinking I could see a lot of potential trips to the nurses office if students aren't paying attention and being careful.

August 25, 20213 yr Upper Arlington's First Community Village opens new complex as part of $37 million campus update First Community Village in Upper Arlington has opened The Fairfax, an independent living complex that is part of a $37 million update. The four-story building with 70 apartments in the National Church Residences community along Riverside Drive north of 5th Avenue is available for those 55 and older. Residents have access to an on-site wellness center including a cardio gym with spa services. According to the news release, the apartments will add 130 new residents to the 302 currently live in First Community Village. Brendan King, Upper Arlington's City Council president, said this addition helps diversify housing options in the city. "People love Upper Arlington. They love living here," he said. "But they can't find the right house for them, and if they can't do stairs or can't do those kinds of things, this sort of facility allows them to age in place, and we're really proud of that." August 25, 20213 yr Charleys, Bibibop parent company buys Upper Arlington building The parent company of Charleys Philly Steaks and Bibibop Asian Grill has purchased the Tree of Life building in Upper Arlington. The building, located at 5000 Arlington Centre Blvd., will serve as the future home of Gosh Enterprises' corporate office. The company bought the building for $5.5 million, according to Franklin County Auditor records. The other tenants of the building will stay. Gosh will occupy about 30,000 square feet of the building initially and hopes to add to its existing 200 employees at the new location. ... The 201,000-square-foot office building was once home to CompuServe, a Columbus-based internet pioneer. The company was acquired by AOL in 1998 and the building continued to be occupied by AOL until it sold the property to Tree of Life Christian Schools in 2010. Tree of Life had hoped to open a school in the office building when they bought it from AOL, combining their schools around town into one. The city countered that the building was to remain commercial use only, and could not house public or private schools. Tree of Life sued in 2011, alleging its constitutional rights had been violated and contending federal statutes require cities to treat religious assemblies on equal terms as non-religious ones. The case nearly went to the Supreme Court, but the court declined to hear the case in 2019. Federal trial and appellate courts had previously sided with the city. Unable to open a school there, Tree of Life used the office space as a space to house Christian ministries. MORE: https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2021/08/23/tree-of-life-building.html
September 13, 20213 yr Wasn't able to snap pictures since I was driving but the crane looks to be fully constructed and operational at the Arlington Gateway site and there has already been a lot of work done down in the giant hole they dug. The new community center at the old Lazarus building site also isn't just an empty lot anymore. Looks like they are in the early stages of getting the site ready to start on the new buildings so should be seeing some big progress at both these sites this Fall.
October 6, 20213 yr Was at UAHS today... The old high school is just about completely down now. Crews were also clearing out the area where the new baseball and softball complex will be.
