Posted August 8, 200915 yr These are interesting videos featuring the subject of edge-of-your-seat heart stopping stuntman and silent film comedian Harold Lloyd. What does this have in common with cities? Well, in the videos, you can see great shots of 1920's city-scapes and some great architecture....as well as everyday activity. Can anyone guess where Harold is...in the "Safety Last" video? The last video I just included for the sake of that catchy little Harold Lloyd diddy! Also, if you could step back in time in Cleveland...or any Ohio city, for that matter, anytime, for one day...which era would you choose and why? 1800's, 1900's? Which particular decades of those centuries would you chose? Enjoy!
August 9, 200915 yr That was super cool! I like the street scenes as much as anything. I pick 1915 as a time I would like to see. There was a good mix of transportation technology, including railroads, streetcars, automobiles, and horse-drawn vehicles.
August 9, 200915 yr Great videos! Well, cities during the late 1800's were horrible places. Dead horses and dogs rotting in the middle of city streets. The acrid smell of industry. Inadequate waste disposal. Roads not even paved. Architecturally, bigger cities were also still relatively homogenous and barely rose above 5 floors. It was until 1900 that cities cleaned up their act and big plans were put into motion. so I'd definitely like to step back and see the 1920's
August 9, 200915 yr The pollutions of today, although much less visually dramatic...especially to the untrained eye, present just as big, if not more of a challenge for remediation. The fact that they present a more often than not less visual impact....make things appear or give the illusion of being much cleaner. Pollutants of yesterday have diminished significantly, although their impacts are still being felt... Today, those pollutants of old are replaced by a whole new host of constituents. I think I would just like to see the architecture from the mid-1800's to the 1920's
August 9, 200915 yr i liked learning how they filmed the famous clock sequence, i always wondered about that. very clever!
August 9, 200915 yr That's one of my favorite too! You gotta love Harold! He is always getting into all kinds of heart stopping trouble! I think the effects are brilliant! I would love to see the attire of the 1920's come back again too!
