People, help me out here.

I have an interview at Sazarac here in New Orleans.  It was recently listed along with Velvet Tango Room as one of the best cocktail bars in the country.  It is just a part time gig, but if I persue opening a bar in a few years, it will be GREAT for my bio.

OK, so I got the interview because the bar manager and liquor manager have both worked in Chicago and new some of the places I worked (Schubas, Tiny Lounge, Chicago Firehouse Rest., etc.)  So for the interview I wanted to look Chicago.  I bought my Chicago granimals - Kenneth Cole.

A Topaz basic dress shirt, a Pecan colored "micro manage" pant and a cool tie, a stripped tie, mostly red but some of the stripes had a grayish brown color.  Standard interview look.  Then I got to the shoes.......

Really, brown shoes?  Sure, I was at Macy's, but all three sales people were telling me to go with brown shoes.  That I "couldn't" wear black shoes with the pecan colored pants.  I personally like the combination of browns and blacks.  Anywho

Fashion council:  What shoes would you wear to this interview if you wanted to convey urban sophistication, confidence, yet in a conservative way for an interview.

help please

THANK YOU

Laaaawd!!!  Where do I begin? With this post, I think your gay card has gone from suspended to downright cancelled.    Your annual membership fee will not be refunded!

The folks at Macy’s were correct, a dark brown shoe (bristre, seal, chocolate, cocoa, espresso) and belt would have worked.  I’m going to strongly suggest that you do not wear that.

Why, you ask?  Two words, "Look Chicago"  STOP RIGHT THERE!  What you’ve suggested wearing is not a “Chicago” look.

You don't really should wear a colored shirt on an interview, but if you're going to wear one, it should be dark.  I would suggest wearing dark suit or pants/jacket. With a white shirt.  It’s a timeless classic modern/urban look.  No tie needed, just bring your sexy swagga.  You can always opt for a dark shirt and tie.  Wear a steel or charcoal colored shirt and or tie.

Here are some examples of the "look" you should go for.  You probably have these things in your closet right now.

See, it is tough when you apply at a bar/restaurant where the uniform is white shirt, black pants.  For the interview, I wanted to steer clear of those colors.

Besides I got some pretty baby blues.

Thanks for the recommendation.

I card has been on double secret probation for a while now

I am going to change the theme of the look I am going for

Nice, honest, hard working Chicago kid in New Orleans who really knows his stuff, but seriously wants to be part of a legend.

I really don't see a lot of dark shirts down here, and I don't want to appear that I can not adapt to New Orleans' uptown crowd.

Trust MTS.  If there is one thing I know, its how to dress a man.  ;)

Black suit, white shirt with black stipes, black skinny tie.

Simple, clean, and the "urban" look you're going for.

Or it says "Mr. Green" from Resevoir Dogs

But seriously I agree, you can't go wrong with that classic look. Back on topic about the Brown/Black question. I have a reversible belt and had gotten dress in the dark that morning. Anyway I  went the whole day with a black belt and brown shoes without noticing. I walked in the door that night and my wife almost died.

A reversible belt?  That's like a clip on tie!  That is a NO-NO!  How old are you?

I am far from a fashion expert, but there are a couple rules I live by and your inquiry hits on one of them -

1) Never wear a striped tie with a patterned/plaid shirt/suit, and vice-versa.

2) Brown shoes are worn formally only when your choice of slacks demands such measures.

While I agree that the "classic" look is usually safe, try not to look like you are going to a funeral.  That can be fixed with a strategic tie choice.

MTS I am 31. take it up with the Calvin Klein Corporation and my wife, because they made it and she bought it.

Punish her!  :whip:

When I meet my daughter at the church on the day of her wedding, I will be wearing brown casual shoes with my black tux.

Miranda_Priestley-1.jpg

I don't wear brown shoes unless I'm wearing a casual outfit, but a lot of guys in the office (note: mostly those over 50) wear brown shoes with certain suits (like navy / or the brown/tan type suits that I can't completely tell the color of, because I'm color blind)

And while you're at it...if you're wearing a black suit, don't wear a white shirt. Unless, of course, you're interviewing with the NSA to be part of the secret agency that monitors aliens.

If you really want something that pops, though, I say go with one of those checkered western shirts with the mother of pearl snap /buttons and a polka dot tie! Preferably one of those flat bottomed knit ones! That will tell them you're an individual, not afraid to make a statement.

Ha! Who are you kidding? I know you have that brown velvet tux with the extra ruffly shirt from your junior prom!

You are so wrong!  That one was black too!!  The shirt did have some kind of ruffles tho!!

OK...Now I'm going to have to go all Andre Leon Talley on you bitches.

– When the photo was taken what season/time of year were we in?

– What was the activity for that day?

– What location (city, suburb, exurb) was the activity taking place?

– what was the activity?

Now having said all that, what brand is the vest, jeans and shoes?  Were the selected items appropriate for the date, time, location and activity?

You've got to know the above along with do I have the personality to work that outfit and do the selected items, work with my body type & complection!

MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY HELP!

Why you calling MayDay??  Hell, I gave you all the advice you need.  See, this is why you're card was pulled.  Damn wishy-washy, I can't make up mind Queen!!

You kids!!!  What to do with you?!

Lose the flat front pants, too. I prefer pleated khakis. So roomy!

Blah. No pleated Khakis are the sweatpants of office wear, especially if the have the hidden elasticized sections in the waist band. that screams fatty pants.

So brown shoes or black shoes people?

It looks like an Eddie Bauer photo shoot.

My number one rule for a job interview is look polished and poised.  The only way  to do that is to be comfortable in what you are wearing.  It does not matter what you have on if you are confident.  Chances are the interviewer is more interested in you and what you have to offer than your fashion sense (within reason).

Of course you don't want to show up in ripped jeans and a tank top, but you don't have to look like you stepped off the cover of GQ either. There are certain basic rules to follow, which are just common sense.

And NEVER let a woman dress you.

>Anyway I  went the whole day with a black belt and brown shoes without noticing.

I went to a review once wearing two different black shoes.  I realized it halfway through, but I didn't miss a beat.

>And NEVER let a woman dress you.

Don't let a new woman cut your hair, either. They will fall in love with you a little more with every snip, and all the sudden they're getting those big ideas women get.

^ Jake, you have some of the most unique life philosophies I've ever seen. Write a book. I'll buy it.

Punch, MTS is right. For that outfit, brown shoes are the way to go.

Now my rant.

For the record, while I recognize that the current fashion sensibilities trend toward these...things...I just wanted to point out that I hate...HATE..flat front pants. Aesthetically I'm fine with them. My problem comes from my size. I'm tall, and I'm also <ahem> portly. I also have fairly large legs, and flat front pants just don't give in the right places to allow me to feel comfortable. Too tight across the front of my legs. I always feel like I'm stretching the fabric. And forget trying to keep something in my front pockets. I tried that with my keys and they nearly stabbed me.

No, flat front pants are the domain of those smaller, and more slender than myself. I wear them...but I hate them. So with this I'm beginning my campaign to bring back the pleat! Give us big guys a break, fashion world. If not a pleat, then some other cut that doesn't make my toes numb.

<end rant>

^ I will wear pleated pants till I die. Sorry, fashion world.

I'm on board, screw flat front pants.  I don't/won't ever own a single pair.

You people know nothing about fashion!  Leave that to my people*!

* with the exception of Punch.  :D

This fashion info is very interesting to someone who is clueless, like me.

The only interview dress code advice I've been given is not to dress better than the interviewer.

Whoooo Lord, I don't know If I have the strength!  I already have a brother and three cousins that cant get dressed without my help.

Maybe one of the whippersnappers.  Andrew8016 sugar, help these poor lost souls out.

Well, maybe it depends on the profession?  I guess the logic is, if you're interviewing for a job, and you're already dressed better than your potential boss, why do you need that job?

I agree on pleated pants.  It wasn't someone with a more than 32" waist that made the decision to ban them from the fashion world.

I'm sure this is the label queen inside me, but I dont buy that.

Hell I've told my former boss not to wear certain things. Another one who needs help.

why is it that fashion and practicality invariably clash? What is so awful about a pleat that it's become a fashion faux pax? More directly...what, exactly, is so fashionable about how when I wear flat fronts, the outer lip of my front pockets bow out so that my pants look like they're impersonating Alfred E Newman?

That means you're not buying the right sized pant for your a) body b) designer/manufacture [what fabric, stich and weave] and c) cut of the slack.

Be quiet, Skinny Person. I have suits that were tailored, and I have off the rack stuff. They all say "What, me worry?"

LOL  Hater!

I love a good fashion thread especially when I can critique random people on the street :)

As a recent transplant to our nation's capital, I can clue you in on something important. The way men dress here is absolutely ghastly. Of course, there are always exceptions to any rule, but I'm pretty sure nearly every man in this city has a pair of thrice pleated olive pants and frumpy khakis with a blue shirt with faint white stripes. They look like automatons, cranked out of a government bureaucrat machine where everyone must look exactly the same.

My apartment neighbor goes to work everyday wearing an ill-fitting white Oxford, pleated black pants with cuffs that terminate at his ankle with black penny loafers. And he has a cute girl friend. He's a hot mess. Poor guy is no older than 25. I guess it doesn't matter. I just need to dress funky once in awhile so I don't get bored.

Well you have to remember DC is a "uniform" city.  Almost every looks like they wear a uniform to work, even if they wear civilian clothes.  On Monday just watch how the women dress and notice how similar they are dressed.

Most of my fashion needs are met here. There's a store handy to where I live.

If I need to dress up, well, that's what my L.L. Bean catalog is for. :-)
